  • Yes, she does have you trained… know that when Sahara is hungry she will eat....ggg....

  • I've been looking for a new food for Tayda and Lenny… I think I'll try Merricks based on this thread! Thanks! I've been rotating them on the Avoderm, Solid Gold, and Natures Variety... along with some raw meat, pureed veggies, raw eggs, cotage cheese, olive oil.... etc etc.

  • Thanks for the info. I usually give Lillie a can of wet food in the morning and dry in the late afternoon. I will add water to the dry and make a gravy. Thanks.

  • We have a great place where we get our Merricks both dry and wet. They just LOVE the stuff. Every kind is a big hit. We buy the wet food by the case 24 cans for $20 and the 15lb dry bag is about $18.

JB Wholesale Pet Supplies will deliver the food so it may work out for you. Check out their website.

  • I pay $1.79 a can, which lasts about 3 days.

  • I just opened a can of Merrick's Smothered Comfort to mix with the furkids Innova dry food for dinner, that stuff looks and smells great.

I am not going to lie, I was tempted to heat it up in the microwave for myself :D I didn't make it to the grocery store today so I had to order a pizza (there is nothing in my house, Old Mother Hubbard has nothing on me my cabinets echo! Hubby is still deployed and I eat out a lot, Farm Fresh has an awesome salad bar! LOL!). Pizza just doesn't look as good as this stuff.

    LMAO!!! HAAAAAHH

:D LOL!! Yeah - I'm amazed at the ingredients too. I'd like to order the Thanksgiving Day Dinner. Duke goes crazy for it. I should sneak some to him - He hasn't had any since Daisy - I don't want to whack her digestive tract b/c she's still young and we're still not steady with the house training. Last thing I want to clean up is a nasty mess.

  • Ziggy and Zoe get Merrick's "Wilderness Blend" twice a day. About 1/2 cup of water on the dry food to make gravy, then I heat it in the microwave for 7 seconds. They LOVE it! ~ Lori ~

  • We pay about $1.70 or so for a can but we can usually get a discount if we buy it by the case for $20.00 & since we only use spoonfulls in their food. It winds up evening out.

  • How much per day do you guys feed Merrick's wet? My older (15 year old) Basenji has gotten really picky. Right now the only thing he'll eat is cooked venision, beef or turkey.

I've tried several of the holistic canned foods and he's turned his nose up at them. Guess I need to try some Merricks.

At 15.. (and I have two 16 1/2 yr olds, one soon to be 15 and one that will turn 13 on Saturday)… you feed them anything they will eat.. period... and if the cooded venision, beef and/or turkey works.. that is what I would feed... period.... IT is a real challenge with these guys in their late senior years...

One thing, cause I just went through it, how are the teeth on your old one?.. because that will really make a difference... and also have you had blood work done recently..? If so how are the liver and kidney values? Both will cause a decrease in eating... and with my 16+ I give them both a pepcid with each meal... Kidney functions that are decreasing will upset the tummy.. and the pepcid will help with that....one pill per day.... so blood work on seniors is very important IMO

  • Alex's teeth are in very good shape. I haven't had any blood work done, but am assuming part of his not eating is due to depression. We recently had to put Alex's partner to sleep (she was just shy of 16) and he hasn't been taking it too well. :( He barooo's constantly to be let in the house when he's not sleeping. He's also had two bouts with Vestibular Syndrome with some residual effects on balance which I'm sure contributes to a loss of appetite.

Well, for Goodness sake! Let him in! :)
You don't really mean that he stays outside, right?

When we're not home he does, and he actually prefers to sleep in his dog house when it's not cold.

  • Gotcha…...

Still would be good to have blood work done.. it is a pretty important part of elderly care, IMO

  • I tried giving Alex a can of Wingaling yesterday. He took one sniff, looked at me as if to say "what the heck are you trying to pull?" and walked away from it. I even tried mixing up his usuall fresh cooked ground venision in it. He picked out a few pieces of the venison then walked off.

Maybe we'll try another flavor tomorrow.

  • Try the Evo 95% canned meat.. they have all kinds like duck, rabbitt, etc…. while my oldest turns her nose up at Merricks... she loves the Evo

We've already tried the EVO in both beef and chicken. No place to buy this stuff retail around here, so I've been mail ordering small allotments of all different kinds. He wouldn't even give the EVO as much as a lick.

Our local Humane Society is loving all the food donations they've been getting from me lately. Looks like I'll end up sticking with fresh cooked ground venison/turkey/beef. I guess he's spoiled.

@Saving said in Anal Gland Health Diet Adjustment (ideas?): scavenging on walks has increased though and that's quite annoying. LOL, omgosh! The amount of food tossed on the ground is astounding! And doodle will grab it up before I have any idea it's there! I wish I had a picture of the day she pulled a (whole) bagel out of a bush!

Thank you everybody so much! I appreciate all the info. I had some vanilla Breyer's all natural and gave my guy a taste of that... boy does he seem to think that's a great treat! Obviously, though I don't want that to be the only thing I do. I'm going to follow up with our vet on getting a draw for the full thyroid panel at hemopet once next pay check comes through. You were right he was only checked for T4. Thank again basenji forums! I was looking back at pics from when he was younger and weighed more. I think he's always been a bit taller than standard and had a little barrel chest. Used to call him a basenji bouncer at the dog park. He was all about playing with the labs, pits and other big dogs - probably because he knew he could outrun them if they ever got too rough. He's much more about slow walks with me and lap snuggles these days ❤

I had a somewhat similar experience. Joey had a seizure which I correlate to taking Simparica. He looked terrible so took him to the vet when the first seizure happened and he was late Stage 2. Put him on Royal Canin kidney kibble and Hills kidney wet food and 4 years later he has only had 1 more seizure and his kidney values have remained constant. I will believe your homemade version is most likely better if you have the correct proportions. All the best to your Bs! Joey will be 15 in November.

I know this topic is old, but I give my B freeze dried salmon bites as treats. I usually find them in the cat section
