@jordandwilly - Thanks for clearing that up.... 9-5 is just fine, IMO.... I work and have always had to leave mine when I was at work, never an issue. That said, we were able to set up the house that access to the backyard (with 10 to 12' privacy fences) with a doggy door and a dog room in the house for them, Locks on the gates so there is NO access for anyone. Dogs sleep 90% of the day so being at work doesn't bother them... never have mine even when I had a litter in the house (And have been in the breed as owner/breeder for 35+ years). You can hire a dog walker to take them out mid day..which is a good solution. and give them a mid day meal depending on their age. I do not and never have used free feeding, period. Especially if you have more that one... you never know what/who is eating what. And you can set up camera's on line to watch them from "afar".... LOL. Keep in mind people that many of us need to work and have day jobs. The most important thing is the time you need to spend with them when you are home. Example would be, if you have young children and you work... when you get home you are going to spend your time with your human children... NO dog would be happy if left out... they need their time also because they are a family member and need as much time as a human child. Again in my opinion
Who gets "groomed" by their "B's"?

When I settle down on the couch at night, it doesn't take long to get a bath (licked to death) from my b's. As soon as one starts, the other will join in. Ears, face, arms, legs, any exposed skin. I let thme do it until I can't stand it anymore.(especially ears, GROSS). Anybody else get a bath?:)
-
Somewhat, they do some licking, but are more busy washing each other….everywhere!
I will say I must have something inside of me that is a Basenji MAGNET. As soon as I sit down it's like I have a fur coat on.
-
My husband used to get a bath from Nala every night. It used to get to me after a while…he just laughed. I must say that he would never let it get to his ears!! LOL!
-
I know that lots of b's lick but I did read somewhere that dog licking is considered a 'domination' issue. Not sure who is supposed to be dominating whome but it appeared that they felt that the dog was showing that you were subserviant to them.
And here I thought it was only my due:)
-
Oah My Gosh!!! I get it too….GROSS. Chance just will not stop. Once he starts, Im a gonner

My dog Sophie treats my boyfriend as if he's a giant salt-lick. The noise after a minute drives me insane. Just a side note, she LOVES to lick our pillows! Blagh!

That's how Magnum treats my DH in the summer, after DH has been out working in the hot sun all day. Drives DH crazy. Makes me jealous (of who, you wonder?:D )! Magnum is not a licker unless you are a salt lick!

Lexi LOVES hubby's feet. Ick!! She will sometimes get carried away and try and take a bite… and it's hilarious!! Miles on the other hand only licks faces and hair. And the other day he got my husband and was licking uncontrollably... I just knew what was coming... And of course Miles ended up putting one paw to hold him in place while he licked... and then the other paw... and then he got REALLY carried away and took a bite. hahahaha... I couldn't stop laughing.
I have to add that I do not ever get licked. I never get kisses or cleaned. Apparently I am not as tastey as my hubby!! lol...

Sahara loves to lick me, I call them Mommie kisses, I think it has something to do with sweating. I am always hot, and sweat easily, I am at that ripe age of the Change. haha!!!!!! She hardly licks my hubby, but will ocassionaly get his hair, and when he has just come out of the shower, she also licks sheets, our pants when we come home. Strange beings, these Basenjis, You Gotta Love Em!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D
-
Our B mostly only grooms my husband - usually if he's been sweating a lot - just come in from cutting the grass or something like that. Every once in a while she'll lick me - usually if I've given her a nice long massage - it's like she's returning the favor or something.
-
Oh yeah, Lulu wake up every night (she sleeps with me) and starting licking me….
-
Goober licks everything and everyone he can. He's starting not to chew on me anymore.

All of our dogs have been inclined to lick us – our previous corgi mixes, Gypsy, and both B's.
I know dog behaviorists do say it is a domination issue, where the dog is showing that you are the subordinate.
I just think it's gross, and always teach my dogs, "No Lick". I don't let them lick people. I know I'm in the minority here.. I probably stand alone. And that's okay by me! -

And that's okay by me!Actually that is a fairly discarded theory at this point. Most behaviorists think it has way more to do with affection (or just plain cleaning) than domination. In all of the social animal groupings you can find lower status individuals groom higher status individuals, not the other way around (except moms grooming babies, and that is because they are dirty)
That certainly doesn't mean you have to allow your dog to lick you, though…of course that can be really irritating. We teach our dogs "enough"...cause I don't mind a little licking..and Tim hates it

heh, i love that licking. i am doing a bad thing, and i dont care, i am feeding felakuti out of my hand, i love the way his little tongue and whiskers and nose feel, it feels like i am feeding a little wild thing, like the birdies and the squirrels.

That's not a bad thing…feeding your dog by hand is one of the best ways to build a bond. Takes a lot of time but good for training.
-
Hand feeding is not bad unless they don't eat otherwise…gggg For those of us with show dogs, obviously in the show ring we hand feed, call "bait"... like fishing for a good performance... In fact in my house anyone that comes in and puts their hands in their pockets get immediate attention of every Basenji staring at them waiting for the hand to come out with a treat!
-
Oh, I feed my dogs from my hand. It IS great for bonding and training.
But, ;-), I wash my hands well after! LOL -
thanks for the support for "hand feeding".

My boy loves to lick himself dry when he is done with his bath time. The same goes for us when we get out of the shower its time for him to dry us too I suppose!
