Fatty Growths cysts & skin tags

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Our dog are now 10 & 11 and both have developed many non cancerous fatty growths, skin tags and cysts. Our vet biopsied them and said they are all non cancerous and old dogs get them. Do your old basenjis get these or are ours unique?

  • All dogs get them, not just Basenjis… and it is common, some more then others

  • Yep common. While I have been lucky and only had a couple of dogs (not basenji) get them, I always have them checked because it can be cancer.

  • Blaze had five. Two on his neck, two on his ribs, and one on his hip. You can have them removed, but I wouldn't recommend it. They can grow back and are not a real discomfort. For Blaze, we switched his regular nylon collar for a wide leather martingale collar, and we always had blankets where ever we went so he could lie down on something cushy (to not irritate the bigger one on his ribs)

  • Spencer has been living with lipomas since he was 8 or 9– so almost six years now. They've never given him any trouble, and they have grown fairly slowly. He has one on his chest that's gotten quite big, but we watch it and the vet has always recommended leaving it. He does have an eyelid cyst that has been removed twice and keeps coming back. It's just part of getting older, I guess.

  • Nicky at 14 has a large lipoma on her side but it doesn't bother her, she has a few 'warts and tags' too but my vet and I just watch for changes and otherwise don't bother them. Ed at 12 is getting a couple of little bumps too. Normal.

  • My older ones have quite a number of these. I just monitor them and have the vet check them when they are there. None of them have had to be removed. If any of them were at a location where they were bothering the dog, then I would probably have them removed.

Hi All, Thought i'd give you a little update! My lil lady had her food changed from Eukanuba medium pup to Royal Canin Mini (she's a very small basenji and doubt she'll get bigger than 10k when fully grown so thought this one best) I also bought her a Pet Head shampoo 'Royal Treatment' with oatmeal and aloe. She loves her new food and never leaves a crumb now, has a bath once every two weeks (instead of every week) and has a treat of sardines or yogurt every couple of days. Her skin is much better, little flaking and her coat looks much better now. Thank you guys for all the advice!

Spencer gets that on his thighs sometimes in the summer. I thought it was a heat rash, but maybe he's been around prickly stuff in the yard. I rub a little lotion on it, and he seems to think that's the equivalent of a doggy massage. I watch him to make sure he doesn't lick it off, and the red is usually gone in a day.

Mmmmm think I might have spoken too soon, Java was having cuddles with me yesterday evening, and the horrible dandruff is back, BUT, only on him ??? I had reduced all the dogs fish oil capsules, from daily, to 2-3/week, so Im wondering if thats why ??? Will start him up on daily and see if that makes a difference… I hate dandruff :(...

His vet appointment is in three weeks and I'm taking the AVA information on Fanconi syndrome with me. We've been very lucky with Rocky. He was a rescue and has become the best family dog. I know the breed is not known for being good with kids but he is so incredibly patient with my two children (3 and 6 months). He even helped teach my eldest to walk by leting her hold onto his shoulders while she toddled along. I'll keep you guys posted and let you know what's up. We've had him tested for kidney, liver, and renal failure in the past as well as chronic UTI and blood-bourne illness. Nothing… "perfectly healthy dog". We'll keep looking until we figure out what's wrong. Thanks for all the info!
