Jenga loves to ride my horse

Basenji Talk

  • As I spend many hours in the saddle I was a bit concerned about Jenga being left alone. So, one day I decided to take him on a short ride on one of my horses and it has turned into one of his favorite things to do. He sits or lays across the saddle in front of me on a soft jacket and wears a harness and I hold a long leash. He loves the forest, looking around and has made many friends with the people we meet walking their dogs along our trails. I have heard of dogs riding on bikes in baskets but I am amazed that he has found this to his liking. Yesterday we went on a picnic ride and he was in the saddle for 3 hours total. Does anyone else have a basenji they ride with? Bike or …..?

  • I used to ride with my first girl. Mostly she did her own walking, but I would throw her up on the horse if I had to be in a busy area, cross a road, or on one memorable occasion separate her from the chicken she had decided she wanted to take home! :)

I have biked my dogs, but that has always consisted of me riding the bicycle and them running alongside. (on leash) Good for a tow if something interesting and fast (e.g. other cyclists) goes by!

  • Must have pictures!

  • My sister's australian cattle dog used to ride on the saddle with her a lot, loved it.

  • Wow, very neat. Most basenjis want to be up high so I imagine being astride that horse gives him a great view of the world. Yes, must have photos!!!

  • Agree…. try and get some photos!

Horses and basenjis... I'm finding that combination is a very harmonious one. All the horses we meet love to visit with Kipawa.

  • We stopped by his breeders farm on a ride last month and she sent me a photo. I posted it under the "Show Off" section. I am sure I must be like lots of new B owners. How did I miss out on all this fun for the most part of my life? He sure makes me smile a lot.

I keep a box of shredded paper in the corner for Gossy to throw around (easier to clean up than TP and tissue) and a box of unshredded newspapers for her to bury bones. Initially the boxes of paper were for recycling purposes (I weed out the bones on recycyling day) but they suit her purposes as well.

Cory and Jayden have foam inside a pillowcase on the bottom of their crates. On top of that are dog crate beds that are wrapped in old babycrib sheets. They each have two little baby receiving blankets in the beds so they have something to "rough up" for when they make their beds comfortable at night. Sometimes Jayden gets too enthusiastic and gets all the cushions etc all bunched up in a big mound in his crate and he can't lay down. I have to remove him and completely remake the bed before he can go back in to sleep. Sometimes before he goes in his crate to sleep, he'll stand up and remove Cory's baby blankets from her crate (on top of his)….......just to irritate her at bedtime. And it does irritate her! Pat

@renaultf1: I'd love to hear what it was like to do the paintings that you did on Yupo :D and also why you picked it for your paper…I'm just curious :D . I'm a graphic designer, so I know Yupo well, however have never had a reason to use it myself. I painted on Yupo during a 'phase' when everyone was doing it. :) It was a total trip – like painting on a sheet of plastic. However, it made for some very unique and interesting hard edges. Lots of people painted with watercolors but I thought that was risky considering they would wash right off if they got wet. I did my work with fluid acrylics which stays put when dried. You bringing this up makes me think that I just may try a Basenji on Yupo one of these days. :) There is a veteranarian in Georgia who does some wonderful pet paintings on Yupo. You can see his work here: http://andymathis.blogspot.com/

@wizard: I forgot to mention that my previous basenji loved to eat rabbits that he caught and muskrats. (I did my best to get those away from him) Oh. ew. We have found one or two squirrel carcasses in the yard over time, but I'm not sure who's killing them. Gypsy has in her youth, but I'm not sure she has the eyesight or speed for that anymore, so it's probably one of the Basenjis. Grosses me out! I know they'd both like to make lunch out of my cats.

I think that alone makes me bonded to my dog, it's like a person is inside trying to tell me things. Those soulful, sorry and loving expression, peering, making eye contact.

Hollie has seen a couple of horses and I believe she thinks "wow, that is the biggest dog I have ever seen!"
