Aloha ,
We have been living in O'ahu for the last 9 yrs. Jaberi was born in Kula, Maui he is 4 yrs old, red/white , he is a total island boy ( loves the heat), his favorite thing was chasing the B52's aka flying roaches, but hates the ocean & water of any kind,. We moved back in Nov & all of us have not gotten used to the "cold" here.Jaberi's breeder is Nancy Greenwell, his grandfather is Kazor Motumbo has won several Best in Shows in Hawaii.
I love when you meet up with another B owner they just get what you're talking about. Sharing stories is such fun. I have only run into a couple of B's at the dog park we would go to in Hawaii Kai . But its like they part the way to get to each other.
Can anyone give me any names of some dog parks in the Bay Area? I have gone to a few, but so small not much running space.
Again mahalo,
Suzanne, Sam & Jaberi

Aloha back at you all! Sigh… Hawaii. If I ever set up a home there I know I would never leave.
I totally agree with you. It's a is a real treat when you meet other basenjis. They seem to KNOW they are amongst their own kind. We are now driving to an area for our dike walks where we go past a breeder/boarding facility for basenjis and labs. The last few days we have driven to this dike area, I have rolled down the window to let Kipawa see the other basenjis. They start running around their outdoor pens and Kipawa yodels and chortles at them. They are all so excited to see each other.
Last year we actually met up with a second cousin of Kipawa's that is from that kennel. She was so sweet and it was delightful to see the interaction between the two of them.

Aloha Fran,
Yes it was hard to leave but had to put the family first thing. We hope to move back in 2 yrs I hope, even thoguh we are both from the mainland I am from Northern Cali & Sam is from Omaha, Ewa Beach will always be home. But I do love me some Canada, Vancover love it Eh….....
I wish I could find some basenji's around here. I have been looking to know avail, even a decent dog park. The couple I found here in San Jose some very aggressive dog behavior. Also Jaberi does have some issues with bulldogs, pitbulls, boxers I don't know if it is the ALPHA thing going on or what. I am also looking into another B do you know of any good breeders in the area??? I would love a Tri.........
If anyone has info on Dog Parks in the Bay Area, meet ups & also a breeder in the area please let me know.........Love this website!!!
Mahalo,
Suzanne

You should come to the Basenji Club of Northern California Puppy Match, fun in the sun day, June 16th in Livermore. Not far from you. Go to www.norcalbasenjis.org and to the events link. I don't do dog parks so can't help you out there….
If interested you can check out my website for our breeding plans this fall/winter and go to 2012 Litter plans. We are considering a litter that will be all Tris. My email is there so if you would like more information, feel free to contact me directly.

O boy- a whole litter of Tri's…. Good luck and patience...lol!

Yeah she moved back! I got to meet her and Jambo when we went to Vancouver a few years ago. Sorry don't mean to hijack the thread.

Welcome!
I'm in the East Bay, and my two go to the dog park nearly every day. There are some wonderful spacious areas for dogs in the area, especially if your B's are good off leash.
One that we frequent is Point Isabel in Richmond:
http://www.ebparks.org/parks/pt_isabel
http://pido.org/It's also where the SF Bay Area Basenji meetup group usually meets, once a month:
http://www.meetup.com/SFBayAreaBasenjis/Another good one in the East Bay:
http://www.ci.berkeley.ca.us/ContentDisplay.aspx?id=56000The Albany Bulb has lots of local flavor:
http://www.yelp.com/biz/albany-bulb-albanyThere are a TON more. I'm most familiar with the East Bay Regional Parks network (http://www.ebparks.org/), but there are still so many that I haven't explored.
On the other side of the Bay, there's Fort Funston:
http://parksconservancy.org/visit/park-sites/fort-funston.htmlI also love the Marin Headlands:
http://www.nps.gov/goga/marin-headlands.htmMy Shiba doesn't like pit bulls, boxers, and bulldogs that get in his face. I don't think it has anything to do with being "alpha," but something about the way they breathe and move (Boxers, in particular) that irritates him. You will see PLENTY of those around here. But if your dog is well socialized, and if you keep moving, there is plenty of room at all these parks so that it shouldn't have to be an issue. Yes, unsocialized or volatile dogs are a risk at any dog park you go to, but I think there's a HUGE difference in the dynamics between, say, a 23-acre, open dog park with expansive views of the Bay, than a 1-acre fenced in dog park with nothing but concrete and wood chips.
Anyway, maybe we'll see you around.

Welcome to the forum to you and Jaberi (does that have a translation? I can imagine how you feel about Hawaii - I'd imagine it is a Basenji paradise?
Pat - an all tri litter? Do you have a secret we should know?
-
No secret, we are just in the planning stages of considering breeding a litter this Fall/Winter. Just waiting on one more health test (Thyroid) the rest are all back and good (CERF, Fanconi, Patellas, Hips, Elbows) and then we will make a decision and pick a stud dog. But if I breed, I would like to have an all Tri litter.
-
Aloha Patty ,
Jaberi means Brave .You do not see many Basenji's in Hawaii & if you do you end up talking forever to the owners cause they are as surprised as you are. But Jaberi so loved the heat/sun, but was not too crazy about the beach. We would have bring him an umbrella & a mat to lay on, and Hawaii Kai dog park in O'ahu is the best.
-
Thank you for all your information I will try some of these parks out. He loves to run & play with other dogs.
Jaberi loves Shiba inu's & french bulldogs…..... But the minute he sees a boxer, bulldogs he is irrated. I have to lead him far away.Mahalo,
Suzanne
