Chew deterrent

    We had read about chew deterrent as Albert, like prob all basenji loves to chew. We got it from the pet store, Advance and low and behold Albert loves it and continues his agression of the drawer knobs… ah it was six years ago that we trained a pup...memories and flash backs...

    Reminds me of a saying horse people have. "Given time, and the example of others, a horse will develop a taste for creosote". Accompanied by a cartoon of a horse chewing big chunks out of a fence.

    Best "chew deterrent" is vigilance! Second best is a crate when you can't supervise. :) At least they grow up faster than human babies!

    Kipawa despises bitter apple. Twice a week I soak down my seatbelt in the car (which he can reach from behind the barrier). Works like a charm. Last year I sprayed it on a few things in a hotel room we were in. When we left, there was still a perfect white duvet on the bed. :)

    Management is the greatest tool for preventing this kind of behavior. Also, as others have mentioned, exercise and wearing them out energetically is very useful as well. If they have access to an appropriate toy to chew on, are managed correctly, and get enough daily exercise, you shouldn't have too many problems.

    A dremel is a one-off expenditure ! And you can do his nails weekly instead of making costly appointments ! Some Basenjis are definitely cuddle-boys or girls. Some more aloof. My Keeper is very much in the former category, Hoover is very much more aloof. The Cat That Walks By Itself. In the house Loki is probably trying to be a lap dog because if he is - well, he is getting more attention than the Yorkie, isn't he ! Basenjis are great strategists. You'll have great fun with the pair of them !

We usually get the bigish ones, there is such a selection of Nylabones now. If your dog doesn't like them at first, try boiling it up in some sort of stock, infuse a little flavour. -Joanne

If you program your dog's chew preferences early in life by consistently directing his attention - and teeth - to appropriate objects and preventing his access to inappropriate ones, you won't have to constantly tell him he's chewing on the wrong things. Interactive toys can help here too. A stuffed Kong suspended just out of your dog's reach can keep him occupied and work off excess energy as he jumps and grabs at the tempting prize. Instead of giving him his bowl of food in the morning, fill the Buster Cube with his kibbles and make him work for his meal by pushing cube around to make the food fall out. He won't have the time, energy, or desire to shred your grandmother's antique afghan if he's out "hunting" for his breakfast! Hope this all will give you something to go on…..

    I think that bedding is great and they love it. I throw mine in the washer when ever I bathe the dogs.
