Good Samaritan gets attacked!!!

Basenji Talk
  • My female tricolor is a rescue. She's friendly, but will only let me and a couple of other people touch, pet, or pick her up. Well….we were out on our favorite trail which crosses a swollen stream (from winter run off). There is a plank which you can walk across. My girl usually likes to just run and jump the stream. She's not crazy about walking across the plank. So on this day the stream was too swollen for her to jump, so she was standing at the edge of the plank "thinking about it". Just as I saw my dog, I also saw a lady right next to her. Then I heard these fateful words..."WHAT A CUTE LITTLE DOG, LET ME HELP YOU ACROSS". Before I could yell NOOOOOO!!! it happened.
The only way I can describe it is...... it looked like someone picking up a furry chain saw from the buisness end! No skin was broken, but as we all know, cranky "b's" can pack a whollop. The lady was understanding, and lesson learned by me. Constant vigilance when letting your dogs run free.....Tim:D

  • Tim,
What an awful situation that must of been for you! Thank god it wasn't any worse. It upsets me though that people just assume that they can touch a dog without introducing themselves first to the animal. I always ask the owner first before I even approach an animal then put my hand out first. C'mon. Grabbing a dog to try to pick them up..Sheesh, if I were a dog and someone did that to me, I'd not be too happy either.
At least everyone was ok in the end. Your right…lesson learned.

  • whew, I've had dogs that would rip skin if somebody did that to them unexpectedly.

I would never pick up anybody's dog without giving it enough time to sniff, and become comfortable with me.

Wow....lesson learned by her I hope too! Who would pick up a dog they don't know?!?!? It is amazing that your dog didn't break the skin...what amazing bite inhibition she must have. I love the visual of the chain saw...I can just imagine what that looks like...infact, I am imagining it about our tri girl right now

  • The ones that get me are the parents that let their little children run up to strange dogs w/out asking. And when I tell the child, "Oh no, don't run up into her face like that; you need to ask first." the parents almost always say something like, "Oh, your dog doesn't like kids?" or "she's not a friendly dog?"

How insulting! Some people assume all dogs are like Lassie. The fact is they have lots of long teeth and many dogs (not just Basenjis) instinctively protect. Personally, even before my son was born and with my previous dog, Rocky - Bless his soul, I would inhibit children from coming up to pet him. He was sensitive. Eventually, everyone in the neighborhood knew us and waved us by. :)

  • Hahahaha… Furry little chainsaw... lol... I think ours would react the same way.

  • @BDawg1005:

    Furry little chainsaw…

That made me laugh too! Nala would be the same way, I think! Thank goodness the lady was understanding and that no skin was broken. My dog only bites US attorneys.

  • Wow… I would never assume to pick up a strangers dog... even dogs that I know but not well, I would not go grabbing to pick one up.....

  • OMG!!  I get goose bumps thinking what Topaz would have done with someone who tried to pick her up. I gosh I can't even fathom the thought!!!

    Who does that?!!

If it were Topaz…it would have been Good Samaritan Texas Chainsaw Massacre :)

@lovedogs @eeeefarm said in should I get a basenji?: wait until the time is right, even if you really, really want a dog now I agree... with everyone. Sometimes you just need to accept that (no matter how much you want a dog/car/kid/house) you aren't quite ready for it. I waited 5 years before I brought my Basenji home and it was probably the most adult thing I've ever done. I was still in recovery from a spinal injury and knew that I wouldn't be able to provide (her) the exercise she would want and require. Waiting made all the difference in the world. Whan I was finally ready, the most perfect little girl was ready for me. Don't fret about it. You can read, research, consider all of your options, and really prepare yourself. (Don't look at puppy pictures online! You'll fall in love without even meeting the pup(s) and it will pull at your heartstrings.) Remind yourself that "one day you will have a Basenji", just not today.

@Basenjimamma: Basil boy..I am trying to understand what type of harness you are talking about. I have or maybe had (lost two leashes at the dogpark a few weeks ago, when son thought it fitting to fish with one and loose it, fish the first one out with the second one and loose it too..! )..any way..I have/had a leash that had a big metal loop by the collar that you threaded the leash after wrapping it around the body of the dog, so in essence it was a leash that could be used as a harness..is that what you are talking about? I think so… but my sister has never used it as a leash and it's not one straight long rope it's two long parallel ropes when it's all undone... But maybe this would serve as the same thing?

@crystalncody: LOL, I had to try it as well, and Cody had a simlar response, only his expression was more like, "Can't you see I'm trying to take a nap? Jeeze!" Then he got up, circled, and faced the other direction with a huff! They love to sigh. We are such inconveniences to them.

There could be a thread on the things we do to registered names– Sol's is 'Solid Gold' but I call him 'Solomon' because he's a deep thinker, or 'Solace' because he is a solace to me-- I like the 'Ruby' adaptation! Kris
