New Basenji owners…...Don't be afraid!!!!!

  • Kiora does that! One one memorable occasion she decided to vomit on the couch and then proceeded to chew a hole into the spot where she threw up, presumably in an attempt to recycle nutrients. Fortunately the couch had been free.

  • Smart? How smart?
anyways, I'd go for the #1. Leaving the trap for the #2. :)
Also, are they friendly to other dogs? like a bigger one, a bernard or bernese dog?

  • So much information on the internet says basenjis are not smart. That is simply not true. I like to believe that basenjis CHOOSE to show you when they are smart. But if you are consistent with training, you will find that you can have a wonderful smart dog that will listen to you for most of the time :) Basenjis are not the kind of dog (are any?) that you can use forceful training methods on. They like reward based training - getting small treats of food (1 kibble or tiny treat) when they do something you have asked them to do. And you also must praise them a lot when they do something well. They work best with positive reinforcement training.

Basenjis do socialize well with other dogs, but of course that depends on how the breeder raises them and how you continue to train/raise them. I believe puppy socialization and puppy obedience classes are a must. They will like most dogs, size is not important, providing you have done the work to make sure they are well socialized.

One other thing that is critical to tell you is that basenjis should NEVER be loose (without a leash) unless they are in a fully fenced area. This is not the kind of dog that you can walk with without a leash on. They have a very high drive for hunting, and if they see a leaf blowing across a street, a squirrel, rabbit or other small animal, they will run to get it, not even thinking about cars or other moving objects that could hit and injure/kill them. For this reason, if you have a back yard, the yard must be fully and SECURELY fenced with not even a little area a basenji could get through. Otherwise if they see an opportunity, they will dig under the fence and get loose. You must also really control them when you or others go out of/into the house. They can tend to want to bolt outside. Sadly, there are some members on this forum who lost, or worse had their basenjis killed by a vehicle, when it darted out the door.

I'm not telling you all of this to scare you off of the breed. You just have to do all of your homework BEFORE you get a basenji. :)

  • Ha ha ha , and just think it's only the beginning. We have discovered thar B's and Shiba Inu' s are all sisters's under the skin. Our 14yo Shiba, Sable, 5 yo B, Bitty, and the 2 yo B, Mr Baroo have tried their best to totally destroy our 3 cushion sofa, and 2 cushion love seat. They have torn the cover from all 4 arms and dug neat little nests in the center of all the cushions, just the right size for B's and Shiba's to curl up in. Karin says that if they ever grow out of it we are going to purchase a new living room set, but there dosent seem to be any chance of that happening any time soon.

I've been involved with Basenjis for many years and can only remember one occasion where one Basenji was startled by one particular noise ( ice cream mixer van starting up), otherwise they seem completely immune to noises even the loudest ones. Of course there will always be the odd exception.

Ladybasenji, where are you in Quebec? Montreal? We have a place in Gatineau (Aylmer sector) and one of my dogs might even be related to yours. You're experiences with your girl remind me so much of my first basenji, about 20 years ago–it gets easier, I swear! Let me know if you'd like help with Lady--they're nothing like labs and will never be "obedient" but there are tricks for training them : D

I think I saw Sophie on a b video website and I was so glad that someone else's B made that noise I showed it to my husband and daughter. Thanks for posting that video because as a new B owner we thought we had some kind of devel dog!!! She does it the most to our oldest dog Josie. There are nights she even does it from under our covers in bed when she hears Josie moving out in the living room. Too Funny!!!!

I use a baby gate in the hallway to seperate the bedrooms/bathrooms from the rest of the house. The 16yr old cat lives in the bedrooms. My B's have the rest of the house. I had to experiment with gates though. The lattice kind my B girl used like a ladder. Stuck her little paws in the openings and climbed. I now have a vertical slat installed to the wall. I had to have extra pieces attahced to the bottom b/c she would wiggle her shoulders under and then stand up popping the hindges from the wall.

@Lenora: As some of you may know, Abbey turned the Big 3 on Christmas Day. She has made a few resolutions for 2007 which I think reflect her new maturity. (1.) I will not kiss any more kitties even if they are my cousin, because my nose is still sore from last time. (2.) If given a choice between a bath and going out in the rain, I will choose the rain if I have to tinkle really bad, and going out in the rain may actually delay having to get a bath. (3.) I will not get up from a nap when my mom is taking a shower and knock the ironing board over on my head. (4.) This year I resolve to eat healthier. No more bath sponges, bath scrubbies, socks, catalogs, leaves off the airplane plant, or my Santa's nose. (5.) When my mom has Important Visitors I will not excuse myself from the room and return carrying a bra. This causes my mom to make very loud noises which hurt my ears and makes me ashamed of my little joke for nearly a whole minute. Happy New Year from Abbey and Lenora! I should probably get my own username on this forum, so I'm not continuing to write about my own undergarments & such under my boyfriend's name… My boyfriend's basenji mix loves dirty clothes. Andrew used to have two female roommates, and Bandit would pull their dirty undergarments out, chew the crotches out and leave crotchless panties lieing around in embarassing places. I felt so sorry for them! Another time, he ate the hems off of Andrew's pantlegs. We came home one evening to find something sticking out of Bandit's butt. Upon further investigation, Andrew ended up pulling out two 6" pieces of pant hems from Bandit's rearend. Bandit also loved to dig through Andrew's roommates' bathroom garbage & pull out the really nasty items and eat those. Many a small string has been found dangling from his mouth while trash is strewn about the bathroom floor... Yuck! Carrie
