I am getting mine from a guy named Rick in Florida he lives around the corner from me.

Does Rick have a kennel name or test for Fanconi and other B related problems? I really hope you are getting your B from a reputable breeder.

He is not a breeder But he has had the pups checked out by his vet, The pups have been to the vet and tested and UTD on shots He has Three other Basenji s he owns. I am also going to have my vet check her out. She will be seeing my vet in a few weeks..

Fanconi is not tested by a vet and it can be bred away from. There is no need for people to breed a fanconi affected puppy anymore. If this is not tested for then you have no idea what you are getting.

I think you need to read this, halfway down the page is the medical problems that can plague Basenji's. I know you are really excited about getting your baby B, but you also want to make sure your B is a healthy little pup and you are not getting into something that will upset you later.
Please read the info on the site.

What I meant was that the pup was checked out health wise and the mom and dad is fine. The mom and Dad does not have Fanconi The guy I am getting the pup from is aware of the health issue they have. he has been up front with me so far. I do understand what you are saying

How old are the parents? If they are young-under 2 or 3, the owner is probably not even urine strip testing them for Fanconi Syndrome which is done monthly if the parents have not been DNA tested for Fanconi Syndrome. The average age for Fanconi Syndrome is 6-7 years old although there have been dogs as young as 3 being diagnosed. You need to read up on Fanconi Syndrome and other genetic diseases in Basenjis including eye problems, hypothyroidism, etc. If a dog has Fanconi Syndrome, it can never be cured of it only managed. I have taken care of 3 Fanconi Affecteds so far and my present girl is taking about 15 pills in addition to all the supplements I put in her food. The dog needs to drink lots of water and urinate a lot. It is a genetic kidney disorder and basically the dog urinates all its nutrients away and one must supplement with Sodium Bicarbonate and the nutrients. Here is the Fanconi Disease Management Protocol: http://basenjirescue.org/Fanconi/FanconiProtocol.pdf
If you have the pedigree you can look on the OFA website if the grandparents or other relatives have been tested for it or go to the Basenji Pedigree Database for related relatives. Some of us on this forum know of kennel lines and pedigrees that have Fanconi Syndrome in them. Do you have a pedigree for your puppy or know the grandparents?
There is no excuse for a breeder to breed Basenjis without being DNA tested for Fanconi Syndrome! The test costs only $75 dollars per dog. There is also no excuse for anyone to purchase a puppy without at least the parents being tested as it will only encourage these breeders to breed more untested pups in the future. I also have a problem with puppies and their parents not being eye tested since many of my rescues have had genetic eye problems at younger ages.

You don't need the strips if the parents and the pup have had the direct DNA test and all has came back normal. I would make sure to ask the breeder if he has done the direct DNA test and to see the results. This is in your best interests as well as the puppies.

I will do that. I am also going to get there Sir/Dam name and look it up. I am glad I have found this site.

Responsible breeders have their breeding dogs tested before breeding. While the direct DNA test for Fanconi just came out in September, some may have missed having it done, but would have tested prior with the linkage test. If the pups were born in late December, the sire and dam should have been done prior to breeding. And honestly, that is just one important test that should be done prior to breeding.
If they are not recorded on the OFA site, chances are they have not been DNA tested for Fanconi. Fanconi is not a test that is done by your Vet, you order the cheek swabs and do the test. So you should have this pup tested by the breeder before you take the pup home.

The test is $65.00 or $50.00 if a retest from the Linkage test

I did some looking around and found the DNA test through OFA. I am going to talk with the owner of the mom and dad and have him do it. i didn't know it was DNA until I looked around. it will be taking care off asap
