New Members- Chris and Obi

Hello all. My basenji and I are new to the forums and are finding all the information within a little overwhelming. Hopefully with time things we become a little more tolerable.
My Basenji is just turning 10 weeks old and is a little handful but we are adjusting well to living with each other within this past week. They sure have a lot of quirks compared to other dogs I have owned/taken care of in the past. I received him from a man who came into the veterinary specialist office I work for and abandoned him while services where being performed. After a few days of trying to contact the owner with no luck I decided to keep him as I am the only one at the clinic without any dogs (only own to huge rats, Wilco and Tofu). The paperwork he left seemed to be registration papers through CKC (Continental) and a sheet with two parvo/distemper/bordatella vaccinations listed. I am assuming this little guy came from a BYB.
I hope to learn a lot about my guy here. Thanks in advanced.

Does the registration papers have the sire and dam's name on them? If so, you may be able to find out about your puppy's pedigree at Sally's pedigree site, http://pedigrees.zandebasenjis.com Also, those who do rescue may be familiar with the pedigree.
You will want to get him tested for Fanconi Syndrome using the DNA test available from OFA, http://www.offa.org since his background is unknown.

Hi Chris and welcome to the forum. Obi looks like a cute little guy. Hopefully you can socialize him to think rats are friends, not prey! Basenjis are a lot of work, they are not at all like other dogs, but they are definitely addictive. Enjoy him! :)

Ivoss- The papers that he left does have the sire and damn listed but nothing shows up looking for them on either website, nor a google search. As for the Fanconi Syndrome DNA test that is listed on the site; at what age should I test him? I will see if any of the specialist at work are familiar with this testing as well.
Eeeefarm- I am working on the socializing of the two actually. The rats live in a nice 5 story ferret cage and when I bring out Obi to play they run down stairs to see what he is doing. Basically at this point they sniff each other through the cage bars with out any biting on either end.

OMG! He is adorable. How could someone not fall in love with that face?? I am sorry to hear how you came across him though. Some people just don't care do they. Probably didn't have a buyer for him and didn't have the time or patience for him. I am glad he fell into your arms though. Make sure you shower him with love and care and he will be your best friend ever!

Welcome, thank you for adopting this cute little guy. At least the owner left him there in safe hands, not on the side of the road.
We had lovebirds and basenjis who learned to be best friends, ate and drank together, so many species can get along if they start with curiosity; hopefully your rats and pup will be good pals. -

At any age…now would be fine.
I will see if any of the specialist at work are familiar with this testing as well.
The Direct DNA test is a brand new test and is, as far as I know, only done through the OFA site by one lab…other will correct this information, I'm sure, if it's not accurate.

I have rescued a couple of CKC registered dogs but they came from either Ohio or Kentucky. Do you have a complete pedigree or just the sire and dam? Do you have the name of the breeder?
I am glad he found a good home! That is sad to dump a puppy.

DNA for Fanconi is a cheek swab test that you order and do yourself. No Vet or Specialist is needed. You can read about the test at www.basenjis.org

Welcome Chris and Obi!
I know you can find some good advice here…. and perhaps in your office too! By any chance, did you check for a microchip on Obi? If there isn't one, I highly suggest that you get him chipped and have the chipped registered.

I don't believe in coincidences - you were the only one without a dog in the office, and this little fellow appears. It was meant to be. :) And he sure is as cute as can be! Do get the Fanconi test done - for peace of mind and to ensure you give Obi the best life he can have. And remember that there are no dumb questions - if you need to know something, ask away. :)

Thanks you all. He was scanned for a chip and there wasn't one. That will be scheduled to be implanted when I have him neutered.
Quick question on this Fanconi Test? Does it show if he has it or does it just determine if he is a carrier for it?

On the one hand, I'd like to call the person who did this some names. Yet– not only did he abandon at a vet's office, but he DIDN'T put the little guy back in the hands of the BYB. Not ideal, but seems the person wanted the right thing. I am just hoping the pup wasn't stolen in a relationship dispute or something. It really might be a good idea to see if you can find the breeder and confirm the person did indeed own the pup, even if you do it anonymously.

It will show if he is clear, carrier, or affected.
