What do B's do when its -38 C out??

Basenji Talk
  • Becca and Tucker would like to thank everyone, but they are too busy napping.

It is crazy cold here too. I think tomorrow is supposed to be around -40 C and with the windchill closer to -50 C which is retarded!! We are really paying for the nice weather we have had for the past month and a half. So far Becca has been outside once today and Tucker has been out a couple. Right now Tucker is in front of the fire and Becca is sitting with me under a pile of blankets. I am glad I don't have to work this week because the furnace would be running constantly and the doggies would not be very happy. Flame (the Toller) is even all curled up in the porch and has only been out a couple of times and he has a thick shaggy coat! Too Cold!

  • I can't imagine such cold!! Becca and Tucker are very sensible Basenjis. What happens when they want to pee?!

  • They are in and out in about 2 minutes flat. Then they run straight to the fireplace so they can warm up their cold feeties.

  • Okay so it was only -16C real temp this morning (don't know the wind chill) and Gossy, who can take her sweet-loving-causing-me-impatience-time to find absolutely just the right spot to pee and poop, zipped outside, did her business, and came flying back inside! I don't think it was even 2 minutes! :D

  • ROFL @ wizard. So I have resorted to bundling up myself and packing them down onto the ground to make sure they go. This morning I put Becca's jacket on and shoved her through the door. All she did was turn around and come back in through the doggy door. So I grabbed my jacket and picked her up, hobbled out onto the deck and down the stairs then stood there to make sure she did both. I imagine she will only have to go back outside at around 9 tonite. That dog can hold it forever!

  • Colder than usual here as well - and Kipawa is also doing the 1 minute bathroom break. What sensitive doggies we all have!

Yep, it's supposed to be even colder tomorrow morning. Should be around -20C or less.

Kananga does his business very fast in these temps. I'm not complaining, because he too can take his sweet time with finding the "right spot". :)

  • haha!! too cute! my boy just found where the heat comes out in the heater. i put a pillow there and he loves it!!

  • When we lived in town we did not have a wood stove so they would both claim a heat vent. They acutally both still do that until I have a fire made in the morning, then they go lay in front of that!

  • We only use wood to heat the house, so on really cold mornings the Basenjis don't bother getting out of bed until there's a fire going. And on some days they don't even ATTEMPT to get out of bed! How do they know it's so cold out when they haven't even poked their noses out from under the covers, and are still down at the bottom of the bed??

I know hey! They just seem to know. Becca would still be in bed half of the time if I didn't drag her out of there. On mornings when we both go to work they both stay in bed until we call them to go outside. Then they know they have to get up and go potty and then get into their crates. In town they would both stay in bed….Becca sometimes until 11:00am, then she would get up and be all oooohhhhh I guess I should stretch and go out to potty then come and cuddle.

  • Love the pics! Thanks for sharing! I haven't had to deal with that this winter though! I live in SW Oklahoma and its been unusually warm this winter. We've had days where it was in the 70s…in JANUARY. Not ONE bit of precip...and no temps (highs OR lows) any lower than 25 or so. Highs have been in the 40F-70F. Very odd lol.

  • Great pictures.

:( Krunzer, as the aunt of a niece with Downs Syndome, who has served on coalitions for and MHMR boards, I do want to say the use of "retarded" as a slur is really offensive. I cringe over that use as much as I do the "that's gay" comments, or "Jew down on the price" etc. It's just hurtful. And btw, not singling you out and I have also used words common (like gyped and Indian giver) before I really thought about the connection. Just wanted to share my response, not meant as any type of insult to you personally.

I am sorry I guess I just did not think when I was writing it. Thank you for pointing it out and I will try to be more courteous in the future. Sometimes things just come out of my mouth(or typing) and I don't think of the connotations first, I really need to try to be more diplomatic on here and in every day life! :)

I don't keep a collar on Ava unless I'm walking her. Poor Leki's tragic accident is similar to what happened to two Goldens who lived down the street from me. They were in the backyard playing while their owners were away, and the whole block knew immediately that it was awful. This is an old thread, but there's some good info in it. Doggie daycare has been a lifesaver for me. It gives Ava an outlet for her endless energy and is good for socialization. She is a friendly girl who likes everybody– human, canine and feline. I take turns handing her off to everyone there, and so far, she'll go right to them with a hello lick. I want her to know that people are good and she can trust them. Hopefully, it will always be that way!

The first thing I thought of when looking at those doggie clothes was the scene in the beginning of 101 Dalmations where Pongo is watching the various pairs of dogs and their humans walking along. I was amused by that association. I don't think any of the dogs in that scene had clothes on, but they very well could have - particularly the poodle. If there is such thing as a doggie runway strut she had it down pat.

When I gave EL D his birthday (Dec 21) / Christmas presents (several stuffed toys and some treats) he had such fun tearing open the wrapping. And even more fun tearing out the squeekies :) He had one toy torn apart before he even opened some of the other presents!

We use the seat belt/harness type for both of them. They're in the back and stay put. They just curl up and sleep.
