Yappy Hour 2

Basenji Talk
  • Last June I wrote about attending a Yappy Hour at a friend's home. This past Friday afternoon a good friend who lives on 10 acres had a bunch of people, most who had never met before, over for a 'Yappy Hour 2'. We headed toward the back of the property for the dogs to run and play, it is 99.9% fenced with 6 ft chain link, except the gate at the front no longer closes. My guys stay fairly close so I was not worried, they investigated all the back and got along wonderfully with 2 JRTs, a white Boxer, one Brittany, several terrier mixes, a Pug, a mini- Aussie, etc. I didn't do a head count but would guess around 15 assorted dogs. We all had a few glasses of wine then as it got dark, we headed inside?yes, inside, all humans AND dogs!

My friend had 3 kinds of chili and snacks. We were inside for about 3 hours and only twice did one of her terrier mixes get snarky, and a brief time-out had him happily back in the mix. Mine of course begged, got a few nibbles here and there, but there was not a moment of any food or chewie resource guarding, as the dogs swapped out chews and toys. I know mine are good, but even I was shocked at how very good they were, as well as all the assorted other large and small dogs! At one point every human left the dining room and of course Nicky got into a chair and was about to "snack" when she was busted!

I still think my friend was nuts to have an INDOOR Yappy Hour with food! But it was quite a hoot. And my basenjis were praised by everyone for their good manners. Miracles never cease!

  • wow - don't know if brave or crazy comes to mind, but glad it all worked out and everyone had fun

  • I think some of each (crazy & brave)!

  • That sounds really fun! I am surprised that your B's didn't go crazy after the Boxer. Both of mine seem to have a hate-on for Boxers. I have had to detach both of them from many boxer lips at the dog park. Every time wee see a boxer come into the dog park we pack up the B's and head for home 'cause we know the fight would be on.

  • What a blast that party would be! Did Don take pics?

  • He did, and if I weren't so ignorant I would post some! I only know how to send e-mail from i-photo, and there are other steps to get photos on this site. Sorry, maybe one of these days….

  • Anne, one of the great things is a free account with photobucket. Easy to upload and keep. Yell if you want me to walk you through them. You can even send by iphone to photobucket or a facebook account and transfer to facebook, then share here.

  • I'd like to second the recommendation for photobucket. Easy to use and a snap to post pictures from there to here. :)

  • I'll check it out. My DH Donald takes most of our photos and some sites claim ownership of all photos posted there so he is leery. Sounds easy enough, if I can e-mail photos there, then figure how to get them from there to here, haha!

This site actually does that, but since the photos aren't actually physically posted here (uploaded to this site) , but are hot linked, I am not sure how they can be "claimed". That clause gave me pause as well…....and apparently also applies to what is written. It would make for an interesting legal case, for sure, if someone inadvertently posted copywritten material. Of for that matter if the material was posted elsewhere without attribution or with false attribution.

BTW, from Photobucket's terms & conditions: "You retain all your rights to any Content you submit, post or display on or while using Photobucket. This means that YOU own ALL the Content you post"

This was her Saturday night while I was assembling some furniture, she was fast asleep! She's cuddly but was literally under me, it was unusual but now I know why. [image: 1669635577308-tn_signal-2022-11-26-180406_002140.jpg]

I'm afraid If I do decide to get another I won't have a chance to introduce them beforehand as it Will probably be a puppy I bring from the US.. I doubt there will be a problem since she will be a young puppy…

@ibi_n_sane: I think your dogs are giving you a silent hint to change their food into BARF ;-) I would not worry about the squirrels, frankly if they were in good shape of body and mind they would not be caught by a basenji ;-) That's what worries me!

I have a very good friend at work who lives somewhat in the country and has lots of what she calls "barn cats" around her. When she first came to work at my office she had 2 cats, hers and her mother's, who had come to live with her, since then she has "adopted" 7 more from her yard. She started feeling sorry for them and started putting food out there for them. Her husband has finally said "no more". She is a "good" cat owner as she has spayed/neutered each cat she has adopted and keeps them inside. Now she has become involved in rescue of the rest. If she thinks it doesn't really have a home she will try to catch it, take it to the vet for a check and spaying/neutering, try to get it socialized with humans and other cats, then try to get it adopted out. She does all this with a little bit of help from a rescue organization and a break on price from her vet but she is still out of pocket quite a bit and I respect her all the more for her commitment to the betterment of the lives of these forgotten animals.:) We all wish there were more responsible cat, and dog owners, for that matter, out there like her.

I would have to agree with the others. Surgery is pretty tricky especially if the dog is on meds. Some medication is mood altering. If you could possibly wait at least a week to bring in the new dog that would be ideal. Males usually recover pretty quickly and are back to normal within a week. This will give your pooch some much needed rest & healing time. To introduce the dog I would have them meet in neutral territory some sniffing & such & afterwards I would take a nice long long long walk around your neighborhood…like 2hours at least. Let them get used to being together with you on your walks. I would even make it a routine for a while until they get used to the pack order. I would also suggest RULES from Day #1. Establish the rules of the house so both dogs understand that you're the boss & these are the rules...My rules I don't allow the dogs to hoover while I make their meals. They have to be sitting calmly until I'm done. They eat in separate crates & before I put their dish down they must sit & give me eye contact. I do the same for treats and toys...everything is given only if they sit calmly & give eye contact. There's no jumping on me EVER...if they do this they get my back which they hate because they love mom's attention :) Good luck to you :)

at the dog park occasionally you will see a dog fight in the larger breeds, they typically play rougher…..more chomping action vs. basenji boxing.... the typical dog park protocol is pulling them apart, or the safe route is the bucket of water....total distraction! can you imagine doing that with basenjis.....screams like little girls!! LOL
