IA-Dubuque-PB Senior R&W Male-In Shelter

Basenji Rescue
  • I am certain this boy is PB even though the shelter has him listed as large! I e-mailed the shelter for additional information about him since there was nothing posted about him on his Petfinder page.

The shelter is located approximately 70 miles NE of Cedar Rapids, IA and N of Davenport, IA, and approximately 90 miles SW of Madison, WI and W of Rockford, IL.

The shelter is supposedly open tomorrow. I hope someone can take a look at him!

  • Did you sent this to anyone in BRAT?

  • I did not contact BRAT. I forgot to put his Petfinder page on my previous post:

    http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/21618917

Here is the information that was sent to me by the shelter:

Yes, Benny is still available and is looking for a new loving home. He is a purebred Basenji and is probably around 20ish lbs. He was brought in by his owner, their reasoning was separation anxiety. However, when we did his temperament evaluation, he did fine with us. We did say that he is shy and takes a bit of time to warm up. The previous owner said that he is "indifferent" about other dogs. If you currently have a dog, we highly recommend that you bring your dog and staff can assist you to do a dog to dog introduction to see if they will get along with your dog. Benny is 9 years old. Please feel free to stop by and meet Benny at our Kennedy mall location. There should be a picture of Benny on our website at www.dbqhumane.org

    Thanks for your interest!

I am going to post on the BBR list to see if anyone recognizes this boy. On the Humane Society website, he is listed as a girl, so I am not sure what sex he/she might be!

  • I found the same dog on Petango.com this morning… here is the link:

    http://www.petango.com/Adopt/Dog-Basenji-14601979

    The information states,

Benny was surrendered to us and is a bit timid at first, but once she warms up she will love you. She is very attentive to herself most of the time, but she is extremely treat motivated and takes them politely. We think she'd be a great companion for a patient and caring family that would take time to work with her.

Call 563-582-6766 to speak to an adoption representative at
    Dubuque Regional Humane Society

I hope Mr/Miss Benny is adopted soon!

He looks like a sweetheart…you can tell he's looking at someone he is fond of. Unfortunately I have a boy of my own that loves his mommy a little too much to share. The old ones melt my heart, but he looks like a young nine. Hope he finds a very loving mom who will adore him as much as he will adore her

I received this from Lori who is the BRAT Mix Coordinator: Yachtz is a sad and difficult case due to his age. He is 12 years old, in excellent health, up to date on vaccinations and sadly been in a Kennel for over 4 months now. His owner has fallen on very hard luck finding herself homeless after hospitalization and is devastated that her longtime companion now has no one to provide for him and keep him safe as he lives out his life. The local ASPC graciously stepped up and paid part of the kennel fees but that was a while ago and now there is again a sizeable bill of over $1000. The kennel owners understand though that they will never be able to recover these fees and have been absolutely great in this situation, they do not want to see Yacthz euthanized, they say he is still a vibrant and healthy mix. He is bigger, about 50 pounds but has the Basenji yodel and coloring. They are willing to work with any group who can get him into a home, be it foster care or a forever home. Understandably though, he needs to be out of the kennels! According to his longtime owner,…. Yachtz sounds aggressive around bicycle riders, skaters of both skate board and any type of roller skates. He is also sensitive to motorcycles. He was like this when we adopted him in 2003 and have no idea what may have happened to him in his early years. Yachtz also can be aggressive at meal or snack time if another dog is near his food. He will protect his food… He does not have a bite history but may do better living out his senior years as an only dog or with an owner experienced enough to deal with these characteristics effectively. Yachtz’s owner is still homeless and has been told once that Yachtz had already been euthanized, please help us to help his owner rest easy in this difficult time by assuring that Yachtz will have the opportunity to have a wonderful forever family to live out the rest of his natural life. If you have a warm spot in your heart and home that Yachtz might occupy for the rest of his life please contact Ray Eckart, BRAT Coordinator. Ray is helping the owner and kennel owner to find a safe resolution for this sweet pup. Please Contact; Ray Eckart rayeck1052@att.net Jennifer

I didn't mean to imply anything negative about BRAT. I think they do amazing work. I was just saying that, according to the shelter, BRAT wasn't going to be able to take the mixed puppy. I understand why they can't; it's just so sad to think of all those homeless little guys. He looks more like a terrier mix to me, but he's a cutie whatever he is, and I hope he finds a wonderful home. Fingers crossed for Mama B, too. I think a curly haired Basenji would be adorable!
