Basenji in Dog Fancy magazine January 2012 issue

    Dog Fancy magazine is featuring the basenji on page 46 of their January 2012 issue. The photo on the title page shows a furryish basenji!!!!!!!!!! I have never seen a photo of a basenji with that kind of coat!!???

    Also, in the 'good to know' section, Julie Jones is quoted as saying in response to why the puppies are born in the winter, "The speculation is that puppies are born in cool weather because high heat might be too harsh for the newborns." But, in the Southern Hemisphere, isn't our winter their summer?!

    Just curious.

    I didn't know that! How very curious! It's amazing that they have switched around. What a fascinating breed! I just had Binti spayed, so I won't be encountering heat cycles anyway, but it is interesting. Thanks for the reply.

    Most and many imported bitches from the Southern Hemisphere to the US have kept their southern cycles

    What is their cycle like in the congo.. the equator, cuts it in half..so there really is no winter… when does it happen there, and does it have more to do with rain versus dry seasons?

    I guess that's why I see some summer puppies. And do Basenji's get a thicker coat in the winter time where it is really cold? Is that why the coat on the 'DogFancy' photo is longer and fuzzy? It looks as if all the hair on the dog is the same length of hair as what Binti has only on her tail.

    They certainly do! My second girl spent eight years with me in northern Ontario. She definitely grew a thicker coat going into winter. Nature takes care of these things…..

    It's a very well-written article and I think it accurately describes the basenji's idiosyncrasies that we all know and love and that the average person would find frustrating. I think the take-home message for those who don't know basenjis is that they should educate themselves more before taking the "plunge".
    Personally, I was thrilled to see a b/w pictured. My only complaint is that the main cover dog wasn't a basenji!

    @scewbydoo One of our vet techs volunteers with the shelter where she was born. Her mom was labeled as Jack Russell. Her goofy nature makes me think Boxer mix, but who knows. The shelters down in S. TX aren't the most accurate at breed identification. I once had a shelter in San Antonio send me a picture of a brindle Basenji they wanted me to pull...it was a calico cat. Regardless of breed, Roxy is home.

    First, thank you for the honest evaluation of your situation. Basenjis are dogs that consider who they live wit, to be part of their pack - family. They only chew or destroy things when they are bored, or mad at you. (Yes, I know people will disagree, but I have had basenjis for 25 years and have witnessed this activity. This included one dog jumping on the table, with me sitting 3 feet away, and peeing in a circle, as if saying, "There, take that!”) A young basenji, under say, 8 years, will do this when left alone for so long. (Yes, I know people will disagree, but I have had basenjis for 25 years and have witnessed this activity. This included one dog jumping on the table, with me sitting 3 feet away, and peeing in a circle, as if saying, "There, take that!) You write that you live with 3 roommates. You do not mention if this will change, so I will assume it will not. Personally, I think it is very unkind (to them AND the dog) of you to bring a basenji into this living arrangement. Unless ALL the roommates understand, and agree, to sharing their lives with a dog that will require so much of their time. The tiniest thing left on the floor could be destroyed, and could even harm the dog. Bathroom doors left open? A basenji might not be able to find anything as much fun, grab the toilet paper, and run. Fun, fun, fun!!! For the dog. You are researching enough to show that you are checking really well to see if a basenji will fit into your life. In my opinion, not just yet. Maybe later when your life has settled a bit. Oh, just remembered you mentioning you studying, the dog doing its thing. It might happen, but if the dog thinks your attention should be on him/her, you may not like that something. Best of luck in your studies, and with where ever your life leads you!

    Wow Megan. I just looked @ my Basenji book again and it is INCORRECT. I did some research online and there ARE other breeds who have disconnected paw pads like a wolf. Thanx for the lesson!

    I used to always take Senji with me to the nursing home where my grandmother stayed for 1 1/2 years before she passed away. They allowed people to bring pets in to visit. Senji knew exactly where grandma's room was, even though it was down at the end of the hall. He also liked to jump into bed with grandma's roommate, who was a middle-aged stroke patient. He never got snarky or nippy at any of the other residents. It's like he knew they were old and disabled. The only time he's act up would be when he'd encounter the resident cat. :D

    In my personal opinion, basenjis don't get along with most dogs generally unless they are brought up to do so. They are a small package with a big attitude. My dog liked some dogs, others she would have outright wars with, especially if it had anything to do with her territory. My girl had a peeing competition with the scottie terrier across the way from us, every time we let her out, the first thing on her agenda was race off and to reclassify her boundaries! And when the scottie was let out she did the same.
