Celebrities and basenjis

  • Sorry, Queen Juliana not Beatrice.

  • First Basenji's

    @Patty:

There was a rumour that Greta Garbo had a Basenji but I'm not sure how true this was.

OMG. I would so LOVE to see photographic evidence of this.
Garbo is perfection… to see her with a Basenji would be divine.
It would make a lot of sense to me. Both Garbo and Basenjis have such rapid, fluid, subtle movements, they alter the very medium which they occupy.

  • @Patty:

Maureen Lippman who is a famous comedienne in the UK has a Basenji and yes, Queen Beatrice of the Netherlands had Basenjis. The infamous King Farouk of Egypt had Basenjis. There was a rumour that Greta Garbo had a Basenji but I'm not sure how true this was.

Years ago I offered the Prince of Wales a Basenji puppy but he replied (very politely) to the effect that he had Labradors which he adored.

Silly Man!!! Doesn't know what he is missing or maybe he does! ;)

  • Loved your reply Pat.

  • Courtney Thorne-Smith owns basenjis, I believe hers were rescues from Medfly Basenji Rescue. Her tri boy was part of her wedding ceremony and she had an article in I think, Style magazine, where she talked about keeping the basenjis in mind when decorating and buying furniture for the house. They always need a good spot for sunning themselves.

  • Our former queen, Queen Juliana

Edit: I actually found a video of her with her Basenji. Quite funny, she was trying to keep her in her lap while giving some sort of interview.. but Miss Basenji wasn't planning to sit still :D

  • LOVE that pic!!

  • @Janneke:

Awesome pic! Thanks for sharing it Janneke!

  • I have seen that short video, pretty funny! No respect for Royalty!

  • Silly Man!!! Doesn't know what he is missing or maybe he does<<

Yes, Pat, perhaps the whole of our Royal Families lives could have been changed!!!!!!

Janneke - is that Mzara of the Congo? I'd love to see the video.

Apparently Maureen Lipmann had her Basenji with her on telvision and she sat quietly in the corner chewing somebody's book!!

  • @Patty: name of the bitch was Fula Nzara of the Congo. I'm trying to find the video.. but haven't found it yet. I did make a video of the video with my iphone.. but I think it's nicer to show the original :)

  • Yes Courtney Thorne-Smith does have B's.

@CrazyBasenjiMom I live in the very Southern tip of Indiana & we get some pretty cold winters & there's a lot of humidity so it's a real "biting" cold & if the winds blowing ~ it feels like razor blades are in it!! If no one else wants the sweaters, I'd be glad to have them for my next b that I'm waiting on getting!! But if someone else lives in a colder area & wants them, they can get them! If no one else wants them, I'll be happy to have them. Before my Mother passed last yr., she'd knit up one for everyday of the week & one to wear on wash-day!! :)

I take Blaze into the senior's lodge to go visit Grandma (in a town of less than 300), sure enough, there's a gentleman there that knew what Blaze was. He was an archeologist back in his day. His last dig was in 1976 deep in the Congo, and he stayed with villagers and witnessed the hunts and the lives of the basenjis in the village. He told me about one hunt. The basenjis chase antelope into huge nets that are strung up in the forest like barriers. The nets are handmade with ropes and vines. Some of the hunters stay near the net and hide, the majority of the hunters take the basenjis to the water hole and wait. When the antelope arrived, they release the basenjis and chase behind almost soundlessly. You can really hear the gourd bells, which are mostly around the loins. The antelope hit the net and are shot with arrows. The basenjis have to get beaten off… they get a little too excited. He has some amazing pictures. I'm trying to borrow his album to scan, but he's not comfortable with that idea. He loves Blaze though and he knows the african word for the breed which I can never remember or pronounce.

There is a commonly used dog in TV and commercials that is either a Rat Terrier, or a corgi/terrier/basenji/chi mix….I have seen in on law and order, and some other more recent commercials...might be that one. Or it could be a real B...I haven't seen either of the ones mentioned.
