Kipawa has eye 'googies'

    Well, that's my term for it. Yellowish discharge from the corner of one eye for the second day now. As we have cats here, it is always possible that his eye may have been scratched by a claw. Also possible is a scratch from the tall grasses in dog parks right now, as he loves jumping through clumps of tall grass 'searching' for squirrels and bunnies. He is our special little dude and for all of our animals, we never hesitate to visit our vet. I think we are putting the vet's kids through university! :)

    So off to our vet today at 1:00 p.m. We love our vet, as they have close ties with the best specialists available and do not hesitate to refer us if need be. If there is any indication of a scratch or complication, he'll be off to a specialist.

    The last time he was at the vet he was a little nervous (had a messy bowel movement on the floor). The office staff always softly greets any animal that comes in, as a calming gesture. I am never nervous when I am there, so I hope what happened last time was just a one time thing.

    I will let you all know what the vet says/what the next step is.

    I've never tried it with dogs, but with horses if they get a scratch or corneal ulcer, I use tea bags on the eye, which soothes and helps heal. I have had better outcomes doing this than some of my friends who got the vet and did the whole nine yards….

    "In order to get along with a Basenji, you have to be at least half as smart as the dog!"

    We have had way too much experience with corneal abrasions and ulcers. Our eye-vet used several different drops and ointments, but i always keep a basic eye ointment (no chemicals, just mineral oil & white petroleum jelly, no preservatives) on hand, if I see a gooey eye for a couple of days, I use ointment twice a day for 2 or 3 days and so far this has been enough to soothe the eye.

    Hopefully Kipawa's eye is just mildly irritated and will clear easily.

    Hope he is ok! Becca scratched her eye once after I cut her nails and then scratched her face. This is why I now use a dremel…but on to the eye I took her to the vet cause she was squinting, they put a dye drop in her eye and then turned the lights off and shined a light in her eye and the scratch glowed green. It was kind of neat..but it was a really big scratch. She recovered fully and when we got her eye's cerf'd before we bred her there was no evidence of the scratch there.

    Back from the vet, and Kipawa will be fine. He has a bacterial infection in his eye.

    Our vet first examined the eye and the yellowish googie. She then used a stain to check for a scratch or ulcer in the cornea. Thankfully that came back negative.

    I have Tobradex eye drops which I will put in Kipawa's eyes 4 times a day for the next 2 days and then 3 times a day for the next 2 days. Our vet will also be calling me on Friday to check in with us. Again, I will keep you all posted.

    I mix a little pumpkin into my B's food several times a week. Most dogs like it, and it's good for their digestive track. I buy organic when it's available, but you can always find Libby's 100% pure pumpkin (no sugar) and it's often on sale for $1 a can. The OP hasn't returned, so I hope that's a sign that the sick little guy is doing better.

    Nice to hear some good news on the forum for someone, such a shame sometimes even the simple things take time to sort out, glad your eye problems are solved to the point of being a possible allergy to something rather then being something more serious, in saying that allergies are a pain in the butt.     'Chest dropping'

    One other note about chest 'dropping' (and why did dog people start using that term - it sort of conjurs up visions of dog parts falling off in the yard) One the the biggest problems in basenjis fronts right now is those that are too narrow and have a concave area between the front legs. I'm NOT advocating a front like a bull terrier but there needs to be some 'fill' there to have a good front but it's not the fill it is the actual structure of the bones in the shoulder and upper arm that - if not correct- actally pull the 'front' too far forward. A quick visual scan from the side - if the deepest part of the brisket is well behind the legs - the front is too far forward. We need to pay attention to the actual shoulder structure to make sure we are not continuing to double up on dogs with a short upper arm. That limits front reach, and creates a not efficient side gait. So go catch your dogs and do a quick check - measure from the top of the wither to the point of shoulder (the most prominant bone in the chest.) then from that point to the point of the elbow. They should be the same. if they are not - stand up your dog and put your hand between the front legs - if you hand is IN FRONT OF THE FRONT LEGS - great - if your hand is between the front legs the front on your dog is too far foward. More than you ever wanted to know probably - LOL

    My Nika's eye got cloudy to the point of flicking your finger at it got no response then the eye turned blood red. Went to the eye vet and it turns out the lens inside the eye slipped. I had to give her other eye these very expensive eye drops called Xalatan or Travatan that kept the pressure down and the pupil small but even then the lens was moving around a little.

    We had the same problem when Seti was a puppy. It turned out that he had crystals in his bladder due to the food we were giving him (I think it was Wellness brand but not entirely sure). We changed his diet and it went away and has never come back. Hopefully your problem is minor like ours!

    I'm glad to hear the spinal tap went so easily. What a brave little girl Keba is. When I first saw she was getting a spinal tap, I thought oh–that sounds painful. I hope things start improving for her.
