Winter is coming

Basenji Talk

  • yep, ready or not, it is coming. And for those of you who think their basenjis need a little more than mother nature blessed them with, I recently purchased this coat for each of my basenjis:

    http://www.fetchdog.com/pet-supplies/discountdogsupplies/barkinbasement/wind-block-storm-dog-jacket/00180
And this is a GREAT PRICE (better than what I paid, but I did not pay full price either).

Diggie had his on for the first time and it seems to fit really nicely. Especially nice for the boy dogs as it is cut out on the underside so the boyz don't pee on it/themselves. So I think these are basenji approved. This model has windbloc, so they won't get too cold outside as it does blow like crazy here.

There is also this mode on sale:
    http://www.fetchdog.com/pet-supplies/discountdogsupplies/barkinbasement/classic-everyday-fleece-dog-jacket-sale/D00179

also basenji approved, but it appears to lack the windblock.

I purchased a size 16 for my kids and it fit Digital nicely, was a little big on Zest. However, I have a sewing machine, so that's not too much of a problem if it really bothers me, or I can just put it on over her other coat and use it as her outside coat. (yes, we have outside coats and housecoats. yes, they are spoiled, why do you ask?) Digital is 17 3/4" and about 26-28 pounds; Z is 16" and 20 pounds.

I don't have anything to do with this company, other than I'm a happy consumer and I couldn't keep my mouth shut about such a great deal!

  • I don't have anything to do with this company either, but it is based here in Portland, Maine! ;) The business is owned by David Shaw (founder of IDEXX vet pharma - also Maine based) and his wife actress, Glenn Close.

  • Thanks for this info. I just ordered Binti some winter clothes. I know I live in Florida, but it freezes sometimes and is regularly in the 30's. Binti doesn't like to go out in the rain in the 90's!

I did not know that. I've only ordered fro
them once, but they seem like a fun company

  • Aw, they seem to only ship within the US :(

  • I'm ordering 2 size 16s for the boys (tall and 27 to 30 lbs) and a 14 for Nicky, 26 lbs, short but round! Hopefully it won't be too tight $9.50 each is a good price for the windblock. As Holly said, it is Florida but on cold, damp days, the dogs need 2 layers. Thanks for the tip!

  • being too tight was a concern, so that's why i ordered the 16 for Zest. She was borderline on the circumference, so i went up. The fabric does give a bit.

  • Thanks, great prices. I bought similar ones for my whippets last year at around $30.

  • Thanks for sharing the store link and the size info (helped me figure out which one to get)!
I just can't pass up a great deal when I see one. So my Cosmo will get a good quality but affordable coat after all. :D

  • I bought 2 16s for the boys and a 14 for Nicky, but when we tried it on, she is a tad too round! I called to order another and they are completely sold out.

Really nice quality, light weight, velcro up the back. I plan to make a velcro 'extender' for Nicky's! Thanks so much for the link.

  • Glad you are happy with them. I do find it a bit ironic that the people who responded that they'd bought coats are from Florida. :D

  • First Basenji's

Aw man, I missed this when you first posted it! You must've started a run on the wind block storm jacket, because the first link is broken and I can't seem to find it on the site anymore.

I'm ordering a size 14 of the classic fleece though. And an "Arctic Fur Dog Jacket", also on sale. Thanks for the link!

And I had no idea Glenn Close was married to the founder of IDEXX!

  • We Floridians are thin-blooded, so when it gets to the 40s and windy with high humidity, it chills our bones. And we are going to north Georgia later in the month, so these coats are perfect. I actually have quite an assortment of light coats and sweaters (for the dogs), but I love these you recommended. I made an 'extender' for Nicky's with some black fleece and velcro I had on hand. I have a lot of coats for me too, I hate to be cold!

I saw that Arctic Fur jacket, considered getting that for Nick!

  • Crud - just tried to order a couple for the girls - "not available at this time." As an aside, wow, little Shaye is 21 inches around and 16 inches long! DEEP chest for such a little girl. Gemma of course, measured 28 inches around - no surprise there.

  • Yep, they're sold out, in anything smaller than 26". Nice score, though, for those of you quick enough to get them. Thanks for the tip!

  • here's another deal

    http://www.jefferspet.com/all-season-barn-jacket/p/0036018/cn/1700/

I don't know anything about these, but the price is awfully nice

I got my coats from Fetchdog a little while ago…
And I've been quietly in denial about the fact that they don't fit.

But they don't fit Bowpi. Curses!

(Poor 'Pi looks so unhappy with her new duds in both photos.)

This was a 14"L, supposed to fit up to 17" girth. I measured and thought it might be tight, and in the end it did seem QUITE tight. The chest strip is made of stretchy material, but in general it hugs her so tightly, she refused to move while wearing it… Bowpi most recently weighed in at 22.7 pounds, but she's rather chesty, as you can see from my signature pic. The length seemed okay.

The other one I got (a royal purple "arctic fur dog jacket") is also a size 14, and just as tight in the chest. I think there's not a whole lot of room for adjustment because they fasten with one long strip of velcro along the spine.

Does anyone have a more petite/less chesty B that could make use of these two briefly-fitted, like new dog coats? Message me!

  • I got 16's for the boys and a 14 for NIcky and it was a too tight. I used some velcro and a piece of fleece, and made an 'extender' ( adds about an inch and a half, could be any size) for it and as the length is right, it is now an acceptable fit. Aprox. 2 inches of fabric, velcro strip sewn on each side that matches up to the strips on the coat. Nicky is 26 lbs but has a round little belly!

They even make self stick velcro for those that don't sew. (I haven't had much luck with the self stick stuff.) Just don't use iron on stuff with fleece! (you have been warned) I got the 16" for Zest and it's a bit big. I am planning on sewing it smaller, but Zest is lobbying for the feed the dog more option to fill it out.

Okay, I'll have to give it a try and see what I find if I can get myself out to a fabric store. I used to be much craftier, but lost the drive in recent years… =)

I would suggest the Ruff Wear Climate Changer plus the Ruff Wear Quinzee maybe some boots if you can swing it. XS on both of the jackets.

We use the muttluks for Mowgli and Miika and they do stay on, they are on the second pair already as they used them so much the old ones have holes in the bottoms - i think this is mainly from the salt on the roads. The pups love them and don't mind wearing them and are a must up here in northern Alberta.

I got my package on Monday!!! :) I haven't had time to update but Dallas loved all of his gifts! He loved the loofa dog! He was carrying it all around the house with him Monday evening. He & our family dog have been playing tug of war with the rope that he received. Oh, and Tuesday he found the bag of milkbones on my dresser while I was at work…thankfully he didn't eat the plastic bag  The bones, obviously, are gone. Such a pig

Leaving the US you shouldn't have a problem at all with that size of crate, they really don't care as long as the dog can stand up and looks comfortable. I know Europe is a whole different thing, I'm not sure what rules are in Switzerland, but I know for friends that traveled to Germany the dog need a hands width between the top of their head and the inside top of the crate when the dog is sitting. For the UK is completely different and no part of the dog can touch the top of the crate, another friend moved to the UK and she has a mini Snauzer (sp?) and she had to buy a crate for a small lab or golden retriever (the size 6 from the link you posted) because her Snauzer had cropped ears and even though she was leaving from the US, she was flying on British Airways they wouldn't allow this little 15 dog on the plane without haveing this huge crate. Your best bet is to call the veternairian that works for the aiport you're leaving from or the airline and ask them what the regulations are for flying with your pet. By your post it sounds like the ears can't touch the top, is this right?

When Lillie had stitches in her paw, I needed to keep the paw dry. I tried everything. What worked and fit the best were natural rubber, waterproof dog boots by Pawz. 12 disposable boots…slips on, stays on. I believe they were around $17.00. Their website is www.PAWZDOGBOOTS.com. Of course, as soon as we came in from our walk, Lillie was trying to get them off. Another waterproof dog boots we tried were waterproof nylon boots with non-skid soles and Velcro straps for a snug fit. $9.99 They did not fit as snug as the pawz. There is no website on the package. The company is Signature Fashion Pet Collection…#130 Waterproof Woof Boots. Good luck! Jodie:)
