Winter is coming

Basenji Talk

  • Thanks, great prices. I bought similar ones for my whippets last year at around $30.

  • Thanks for sharing the store link and the size info (helped me figure out which one to get)!
I just can't pass up a great deal when I see one. So my Cosmo will get a good quality but affordable coat after all. :D

  • I bought 2 16s for the boys and a 14 for Nicky, but when we tried it on, she is a tad too round! I called to order another and they are completely sold out.

Really nice quality, light weight, velcro up the back. I plan to make a velcro 'extender' for Nicky's! Thanks so much for the link.

  • Glad you are happy with them. I do find it a bit ironic that the people who responded that they'd bought coats are from Florida. :D

  • First Basenji's

Aw man, I missed this when you first posted it! You must've started a run on the wind block storm jacket, because the first link is broken and I can't seem to find it on the site anymore.

I'm ordering a size 14 of the classic fleece though. And an "Arctic Fur Dog Jacket", also on sale. Thanks for the link!

And I had no idea Glenn Close was married to the founder of IDEXX!

  • We Floridians are thin-blooded, so when it gets to the 40s and windy with high humidity, it chills our bones. And we are going to north Georgia later in the month, so these coats are perfect. I actually have quite an assortment of light coats and sweaters (for the dogs), but I love these you recommended. I made an 'extender' for Nicky's with some black fleece and velcro I had on hand. I have a lot of coats for me too, I hate to be cold!

I saw that Arctic Fur jacket, considered getting that for Nick!

  • Crud - just tried to order a couple for the girls - "not available at this time." As an aside, wow, little Shaye is 21 inches around and 16 inches long! DEEP chest for such a little girl. Gemma of course, measured 28 inches around - no surprise there.

  • Yep, they're sold out, in anything smaller than 26". Nice score, though, for those of you quick enough to get them. Thanks for the tip!

  • here's another deal

I don't know anything about these, but the price is awfully nice

I got my coats from Fetchdog a little while ago…
And I've been quietly in denial about the fact that they don't fit.

But they don't fit Bowpi. Curses!

(Poor 'Pi looks so unhappy with her new duds in both photos.)

This was a 14"L, supposed to fit up to 17" girth. I measured and thought it might be tight, and in the end it did seem QUITE tight. The chest strip is made of stretchy material, but in general it hugs her so tightly, she refused to move while wearing it… Bowpi most recently weighed in at 22.7 pounds, but she's rather chesty, as you can see from my signature pic. The length seemed okay.

The other one I got (a royal purple "arctic fur dog jacket") is also a size 14, and just as tight in the chest. I think there's not a whole lot of room for adjustment because they fasten with one long strip of velcro along the spine.

Does anyone have a more petite/less chesty B that could make use of these two briefly-fitted, like new dog coats? Message me!

  • I got 16's for the boys and a 14 for NIcky and it was a too tight. I used some velcro and a piece of fleece, and made an 'extender' ( adds about an inch and a half, could be any size) for it and as the length is right, it is now an acceptable fit. Aprox. 2 inches of fabric, velcro strip sewn on each side that matches up to the strips on the coat. Nicky is 26 lbs but has a round little belly!

They even make self stick velcro for those that don't sew. (I haven't had much luck with the self stick stuff.) Just don't use iron on stuff with fleece! (you have been warned) I got the 16" for Zest and it's a bit big. I am planning on sewing it smaller, but Zest is lobbying for the feed the dog more option to fill it out.

Okay, I'll have to give it a try and see what I find if I can get myself out to a fabric store. I used to be much craftier, but lost the drive in recent years… =)

  • I was highly motivated by the fact that they were out and I couldn't exchange for a larger size! If it's only a bit snug, you may not even need fabric, just stitch the velcro strips together so there is overlap then use with the velcro on the coat, it will give you a good half inch more room.

  • Yeah I got a page error :( I need to find something good for Anubis…Im in Oklahoma and we get snow/ice and howling north winds and 20s-teens for temps here. And he of course has no hair lol. His jacket last winter worked great but he found where I hid it and he shredded it lol. So I gotta get on the ball and find something good for him and for our horrible winter conditions.

  • well, for those of you who missed it last go round, the fetchdog.com people are having another sale! Some great looking coats, some even basenji-approved coats. We've been using these coats for several months:

size 16 for the male and female basenjis in this house.

we have HUGE drifts of snow right now and the WIND has been crazy. I have exposed yard in some places and over 2 foot drifts in others. Of course you have to go through the drifts to get to the bare spots, or you did before hubby and I shoveled basenji-paths.

  • First Basenji's

Um okay, I admit… I never got my butt down to a fabric or a craft store. Instead, I donated the coats that were too small to my local shelter. They were happy to put them to use. =)

I am glad I am not the only one who has to make basenji paths in our yard. We haven't had as much snow as we had last winter, thank goodness, but we usually take the skidoo and make some paths for them when it is really deep.

  • Oh the things we do for our brats, er, I mean lovely canine companions.

We use the muttluks for Mowgli and Miika and they do stay on, they are on the second pair already as they used them so much the old ones have holes in the bottoms - i think this is mainly from the salt on the roads. The pups love them and don't mind wearing them and are a must up here in northern Alberta.

I got my package on Monday!!! :) I haven't had time to update but Dallas loved all of his gifts! He loved the loofa dog! He was carrying it all around the house with him Monday evening. He & our family dog have been playing tug of war with the rope that he received. Oh, and Tuesday he found the bag of milkbones on my dresser while I was at work…thankfully he didn't eat the plastic bag  The bones, obviously, are gone. Such a pig

If the wax doesn't work, try muttluks…my B wears them. It's funny at first for her, but she adjusts and takes her usual walks with them. Keep us posted on how the wax works...very interesting!
