New Puppy Needs

Basenji Talk

  • It's been awhile since I've had a new puppy and want to see if there is anything I've forgotten (haven't bought anything yet, but want to make sure I got the list down, lol)

Crates (life stages for home and one for air travel)
    Food Bowl
    Leash/Collar/ID tags
    Food Storage Container
    Variety of different chew toys
    Food/Training Treats
    Baby Gates
    Puppy toothbrush/wipes
    Bitter Apple
    Spray Bottles
    Lots of paper towels, lol
Should I get an stain and odor remover? I have hard wood floors with a few area rugs.

    Did I forget anything?

  • Get the Pet Spot Bot!! :) It's awesome!! It does all the work!

  • For teeth cleaning - you may want to chuck the toothbrush stuff and find some 'DentaTreat' (it's from Wysong) it's a cheese based powder that is wonderful in cleaning teeth and gums. You just sprinkle on food - it will even clean old rescue dog teeth. Enjoy your puppy!

    Pet Spot Bot?

  • Regular Spot Bot

    It works miracles!

Thank you for the link, I definitley book mark it, but I only have one 5x9 area rug right now and some little 2x3 ones here and there (those are easy to pick up/put up). So its a little much for the limited carpet I have.

  • I'm looking at an empty bag of Wee-Wee Pads, by Four Paws. (aka Pee Pads) So far, my now 12 week old, that we've only had for 3 weeks (seems longer  ) uses them when we're not right with her. She was apparently paper trained when we got her. But, being a young puppy, sometimes when we take her outside, she won't go potty or poo-poo. Then we come back inside and then she goes  . 1/4 the time on the pee pads and another 1/4 wherever!! But at least its not all the time on the rugs/carpet/hardwood floor. There is supposedly a scent on the pads that draws the pups to it. Sometimes I put newspaper on top of the pads and for extra insurance.

I also use Nature's Miracle with the "oxy" stuff. I sop up the urine with paper towel, best I can and then squirt the area thoroughly with the Miracle. I let it soak in and sometimes, if I remember where the spot was, I sop up the Miracle. Usually, I can't find the spot unless I step in it.

I'm sure your getting excited about your new pup! I was making the lists too. When are you getting your pup? Boy or Girl? Basenji I presume?

  • For those of you who have carpet, I would definitely recommend the Spot Bot. I can't say enough good things about it… Mainly because if Miles pees in the house one more time... UGH!! That little machine is the bomb!! You can vacuum up the pee with the attachment, then shoot it with cleaner and be done! OR just push the one button and it does it all for you!!

I think Miles came from a situation where he had a doggie door because quite frankly the boy doesn't do a good job of holding it. He knows he's not supposed to, but he'll frantically run in circles about 2 hours after we just took him outside and then he'll go. Maybe I've just gotten too comfortable with being able to take Lexi twice a day... I don't know. But I took him out at 3am, 7am, and at 10:30 he pee'd on the floor!! Once I find the link to the name of the dip sticks, I'm calling the pharmacy to see if they have them and then he's getting tested for Fanconi.

We want pics of the new pup!!

  • IMO, it is best to potty train either in a litter box for dogs or out doors.. I never paper train.. it is so difficult to break that paper habit …. and just when you think you have, someone puts a magazine or newspaper on the floor and opps....

For Miles.... make sure that he doesn't have a UTI... that will cause a dog to pee a lot... and also it is alway good to check for Fanconi also. The test strips that you want are Urine Glucose test strips (such as used by diabetics) just ask the pharmist that you want test strip to check for sugar in the urine. Again I would also take a trip to the Vet and have him checked out for a possible UTI

  • Poop Scooper :) and bags!

I'm sorry you're having problems with Miles. And I will definitley post pics when he/she comes home, probally from the minute I get "it" from the airport, I'm a little bit of a pic takinn-aholic, lol

Yes, Basenji, lol. I am getting way excited. My breeders girl just went into season, she has a off season, so if the breeding takes then it'll be around September, if I'm doing the math right. I haven't locked down on male or female yet. I'm waiting more to see how the personalities of the pups are and what the breeder thinks would best fit with me and my current dog a lazy male boxer.

  • my favorite sanity toys to keep cairo busy?

Nylabones - takes about 2 hours to eat, edible bones very safe

Greenies = great for bad breath, long time to eat

Bleached big bones filled with Peanut butter - they spend days licking it and the bone is too big and hard to eat, but is a great teether…petsmart

Nylabone = teething bones, non edible but flavored with chicken or liver

These will not cause diahreah in puppies....greenies will make the poop a bit softer than usual and green :)

Poop bags are a must for those weird akward times at the vet for shots and your puppy goes.

  • I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this yet, but I've seen with hard wood floors, that it seems to eat the wood when a dog piddles on it, my mom's hard wood floors have very dark stains from pet messes and we can't get rid of them
I think also she didn't use the right cleaner
I too, use Nature's Miracle and it does work very well
also I got the Bitter Barrier to spray on plants Bindi keeps trying to eat
    it works well too

That good news, Dennis - and you are likely to find, in the long run, that the older boy will teach the pups far more than you ever can. They'll get their street cred from him !

@Gabriel: I have a small travel type crate that I put Noel in while we are away from home and at night. she is 14 weeks. She is really getting to big for this. What types of crates do you keep your B's in? I am looking at a medium size cage type kennel. 30L x 19W x 21H inches I want to be sure she has plenty of room to lay down in it. What is your advice? i got a crate big enough 4 a large dog. like a lab or something simular. I had 2 get the travel crate because in a wire crate she would pull things into the crate and eat it. comforters rugs you name it. She even ate her bed. fluff everywhere.

Once you do get a list of vet hospitals go and visit them and ask questions. In my experience the good ones will let you see their examining rooms, boarding area, etc., and are quite willing to answer questions (including prices).
