Cairo being "innocent"

  • "Can't you see that I'm cleaning?"

    "I promise, I didn't touch it again"

As you can see the Basenji mark on the couch handle. The older he gets, the less he chews on the things that are not chew toys and he cleans himself more thorough/often.

  • Yea, I noticed the same with my Basenji. Much less chewing on furniture as he aged (down to nothing at this point). He still does his digging when he settles for a nap. I don't think that will ever change.

Don't you just love how they sit there with that innocent look? :D

  • Hahaha oh yeah, Cairo still likes to dig and get very mischevious when he's sleepy (just like a small child). Maybe when he gets three or four, we can get new furniture, haha.

Yes, gotta love the innocent stare. They are SO beautiful.

  • I need to knock on wood as I say this, but Binti (who is 5 months) doesn't seem to be a big chewer. She is a big paper shredder, but, aside from one flip-flop, she hasn't destroyed anything worthwhile. (I'm knocking, I'm knocking!)

Cairo sure has beautiful long front legs!

He sure says thanks! He licks 'em enough, I wipe all four of his feet with a wet wash rag after every walk. He can't kelp but pee on his front feet a 'lil when his leg is pointed straight up, haha.

  • Hey, my couch arm looks just like that!

Neither of my innocent little creatures seem at all concerned with their havoc. I swear, they think we like it that way.

  • Knock on a big piece of wood - Kipawa has not done anything to our leather couch or 2 leather chairs. Wait, that's not right - he has licked one of them to death. :)

Lots of physical and mental stimulation keeps a basenji good and tired. I would certainly suggest a beginner puppy class. Cairo needs to learn that you are in charge and that he has to respect you and his home.

As our breeder said, basenjis will test you to see how much they can get away with. Be consistent and let him know that you are the boss and that he has to behave the way YOU want him to.

I totally believe that. However, Shaye has taught me that respect must go both ways with these animals; they are different from other dogs. Over time we have developed a pretty mutual partnership, and it's clear she knows what is and is not allowed. She just doesn't always agree with the rules, then she will either try to find a way around them or ignore them. Gemma, being a mix and not "all" basenji, is far more respectful, although she believes Shaye is the boss unless we keep reminding her we are. I think because Basenjis are so smart, it's important to them to feel they have some say in the matter, whatever the matter is.

  • Whoops ;)….........

We go to a dog park where a trainer goes to work with his GS and his Malinois - except that the Malinois looks a little more furry than yours, the shape and color of your dog very much resembles his. As an aside, he says his Malinois was very easy to train. (makes me embarrassed to even try to get my girls to "come" in his presence.)

She likes watching Maya in the ring as she says Maya is so elegant trotting around compared to our labs and pugs! :D But she certainly wouldnt have a basenji herself, and i was never allowed one when i lived with her as she didnt like the breed. But i agree with Nicola, i cant believe she doesnt like my little Maya - who couldnt love her? :D

She was probably mad at you because it was not plugged in and pointed at her to keep her warm while she napped!

Love the pictures!! Adorable poser…I've always consider paper products a staple in my B's diet! I have to keep all garbage cans either up where she can't reach or with a secure lid. It's gotten to the point that I forget my manners everywhere else I go and don't put my napkin on my lap!
