Walk or Play Date for Los Angeles Dogs?

  • I live in Pasadena. I would love to meet other Basenjis. I have a 4 yr old Basenji who is friendly and playful. Mellie is a rescue who appears to be 100% Basenji, but I have never seen another Basenji IRL, so I have no comparison. She sure sounds like a Basenji :-)

We walk regularly in the Pasadena Arroyo and Eaton Canyon. If you are interesed in joining us (me, Mellie the B and Sophie the Rat Terrier, and sometimes a friend and her Chi), let me know.

  • Hi! Are you aware of our basenji meet-ups at Laurel Canyon dog park on Saturday mornings? It's a bit of a trek from Pasadena but you may enjoy it. People start arriving about 10:30 am. Maybe we will see you there!

  • It looks like about a 30 minute drive for me–well worth it to meet other Basenjis!

  • Moving out to Encino area at the end of June with my brindle boy! Would love to join you all!

  • Hi all SoCal basenji owners - officially moved here now from Boston. Are those Laurel Canyon meetups still happening? How often? Would love to get my boy out playing with all you other B's!

  • So far as I know, they are still happening. When I went, an animal control officer demanded to see proof that my dogs were currently licensed. So, if you go, take proof of licensure with you.

  • Hi, this is the 1st time I'm posting. I have a 2 yr old chi/basenji mix and live in LA and would love to be able to meet up other local basejis and owners. Are people still meeting up in Laurel Canyon?

  • Plan on going to Laurel Canyon tomorrow with my B. Plan on getting there around 10:30am. Hope to see other B's out there too!

  • sorry I hadn't seen these posts until today - YES many Bs will be there tomorrow around 10:30 am - 11 am…see you there!!

  • What a great time today at Laurel Canyon! Such a great showing of B and B owners =) Anyone in the area that hasn't come yet, definitely join us sometime!

  • Will you guys be there next weekend? I had wanted to come today but I wasn't able to.

  • From what everyone was saying there is always some subset of the entire group every Saturday starting 10:30am. I definitely plan to return next weekend =)

  • Tee,
We do have B's there from our group every weekend. There are now about 16-18 B's!
On a rare occasion they will all be there, but usually half that every Sat am show up.
We have a facebook page for our group of LA basenjis as well called "the real Basenjis of hollywood"….so we can share pics and such.
    Hope to see you soon!
    Raquel

  • Thanks for the info, BellaJane. I'm going to try to go next Saturday. I just looked up the group on facebook and I'm going to request to join it. I only have a B mix, but he acts and thinks he is a full B. So whoever runs the group- please accept my friend request! :)

  • Hi!
I live in the Pasadena area. I've been a member of this forum but haven't posted in a long time. I had to re-register to get back on. Anyways, I've had playdates at my house before with some of the local basenji owners. I have two basenjis – Talker and Savannah.

I live in the north part of Pasadena; near Sierra Madre Boulevard. Talker does well with other basenjis; Savannah is friendly but very shy. Would love to get together for a good walk with Talker; he needs it.

  • Hi Laura
My B mix would probably have a great time with your B's, if you want to get together sometime. His most favorite thing to do is to run around a yard with other dogs and play. Let me know if you ever want to meet up :)

@laurieannechen There is a SoCal Basenji meetup this Saturday, June 20, 2020 from 9 AM- 12 noon, Laguna Beach Dog Park www.lagunabeachdogpark.com Here is a link to the Facebook Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/359744554994753/ Join the Facebook group "Orange County (CA) Basenji Meet Ups" https://www.facebook.com/groups/942444349188499/ They are trying to set up meetups at least once a month. With the COVID-19 virus meetups were on hiatus but now that some dog parks are opening up meetups for Basenjis are starting up again. I live in San Diego so I really have to think about driving 1.5 hours with 2 senior Basenjis. Have fun! Lynn Bilotta

Just got back from the Harrisburg show. Willy was only one in his class again and Jasper got Reserve Winner again. NBC was roaming around with a camera crew and came over to interview our little group and asked us about Basenji's. They said the show will air on Thanksgiving day nationally, how much of the interview will make the cut I don't know, but I will certainly watch to see if any of it does.:D

I came across an enclosed doggie park here in Queens New york. Not very big but the owners seemed pretty alert which is great. Champ loved it, except that we had one big hairy dog enter the area and I knew this was trouble since my B loves to pull hair (mine too) anyway as soon as Champ saw this dog he was off and I was off after him. Callin ghim to come over,,yeah right. I almost caught him twice then finally I saw him grab the dog and kind of nip and pull. I was so eager to grab him at this point since eventhough I know he wouldn't bite the dog, I'm sure niether the owner or the dog would appreciate getting a haircut from my B. Well as I was running over to them I saw my B grab hold of the dogs tail and pull. Let me just insert this: the other dog was too busy playing with big dogs her size to worry about this little brat pulling at her. Anyway I caught up to my B and put his leash on ending his fun time at the park and when I look down at him, he had a big fur ball in his mouth…how embarrasing. All in all the park was a nice experience and gave my B a chance to run around free without his mommie chasing after him on the leash.
