I apologize from the outset if anyone reading this is offended. Mister Two Dicks has been neutered, so he has no balls. But for the life of me he loves gnawing at where they used to be, and I don't mean for a few seconds. He goes on with it which feels for hours. It sounds like he is gnawing on an old bone. He especially loves to do it under the bedsheets in the very early morning, while I am trying to get my last few minutes of shut-eye before I have to drag myself out of bed. Is this common? Or is he just a deviant and I have to live with it?:eek:

Sometimes, they get 'fixated' on an area. Shadow likes to chew nails. It's irritating. I just call him or try to distract him. You could try putting something on the area that he doesn't like in his mouth, however, you have to be careful it is not toxic to him. Or, you could get an ecollar for a few weeks to see if that helps alleviate the issue and make him forget about the area for awhile.

Sometimes the scar tissue may itch, and of course once they start licking, it goes on and on. I would try something like tea tree oil, not on any irritated skin, but near it. My Topper would not put his face anywhere near that scent, and it would keep him from gnawing his tail.

I used tea tree oil when Kananga was neutered. Few dabs of that around the actual wound kept him away at all times. He hates that smell more than anything. :)

Just curious - is it possible for dogs to get "phantom pain"? This is common in someone who has lost a limb, hand, foot, etc.

++ on the tea tree oil - I've used it when Gemma gnaws on her knees (who knows why, she has issues), and even on furniture when Shaye was in her teething stage - they really don't like it at all:(
