Yes!! Bowpi loves to "box" when she gets excited. But she doesn't have much follow-through. It's adorable. I'm not quite sure what she's thinking. I take it as an expression of her excitement and desire to be involved. She usually starts boxing when our Shiba tries to roughhouse with her, or when the Shiba is roughhousing with other humans – and she inserts herself into the mix.
Your basenji's tricks
-
What tricks (not obedience commands) have you taught your basenji to do? How do you do them?
On the weekend Kipawa mastered shake a paw, shake the other paw, and "high five". I'd like to get some ideas of fun things I can teach him.
-
Lycia knows a few crowd pleasers, but everyone's favorite is "fais des bisoux"
where Lycia will daintily touch her nose on each of your cheeks in imitation of the French welcome kisses.

Love it! How did you get Lycia to do that (training)? I'd love to hear about her other ones!
-
Awww you should try to post a video of that if you could!
-
Fran is wonderful…she used to clicker train her cats, so a b was just more of the same!
-
I want to see the kisses too. I have taught my rotties touch but not to my cheeks. What a sweet idea!
Sayblee did many tricks… alternate paws, give 5, rear, circle left and right, plus normal sit and down.
Arwen isn't into tricks so she does rear, a very cute wave of her paw, give me five and sit and down.
Cara only does rear, shake and give me a paw. But she has a lot of other commands (such as get the ball, get the squeaky and "shake it" lol to shake her pull toys as if killing).
-
Hope does the high 5 and high 10 and also handshake.
i am now trying to teach speak… bahahaha.... this ones an interesting one, i am determined we will succedd one day...

Keep at it. I have 3 that yodel/talk on command (the only trick I've taught them - although Ruby will give a paw on command if she is in the mood). Two of mine yodel on command for their dinner and one yodels and/or talks on command to come out of his crate. My fourth doesn't yet see the point to yodeling on command  - she only yodels to Ozzy to get him to play.
-
I have had extremely good results with the clicker. You know your B the best, just watch for certain antics that he/she does. I had Buddy doing a 'crawl' (marked it with my two finders going back and forth like walking)j where he would just use his front paws and drag himself along the floor. 'Play dead' was a work in progress, sometimes he just didn't want to drop down, but when he did at the 'Bang' gun, it was sooooooooooo cute!. Good Luck!!

That's what I've been working on for the last couple months. Every now and then I get a weird noise out of Kananga when I have him sit for his food, it's hard to describe, almost a growl/burp/yodel. I've gotten into the habit of praising him when he does that, immediately giving him his food to encourage future noises.
I just enjoy the rare moments of hearing him get vocal.

well, i'll admit that Zumi isn't really a trick, dog. he usually puts one ear back at me, as if saying "um…why should i do that??" but... he does know
- stand and spin.
- show him who's boss - where he shakes his stuffy viciously
- pictures! - where he will freeze right where he is
- poor poor, or are you sad? - where he will do a fake pout and make his body shiver then slowly falls over onto his back
- go, zumi go! - and that starts a B-500!!
-
I'm having a second cup of morning coffee and reading all of these with a smile on my face and ideas…. What a great way to start the day!
-
Mine all take a charlee bear from my lips, very gently, then sit to eat it.
-
Not nice. You first blow him off as not into tricks, then list ones that put me to shame… going to go pout now.

Dolce can give high 5 & low 5. A great rollover and will do stick em up where she stands on her hind legs and puts both front paws in the air and stumbles backwards.
-
I can't even imagine! It seems like it would be so difficult or impossible to teach them some of these tricks lol…for me at least.:o
-
Great thread this, Fran. It's made me smile, i love the tricks Zumi can do, especialy show him whose boss and poor, poor.
Also like the stick em up that Dolce does. Going to have to try them.
Malaika does the high five and the choosing game.
This is where i put a treat in one closed fist and show her both hands saying which one.
She places her paw on the hand she thinks it's in, if she guesses correctly she gets the treat, if i open my hand and nothings there she then places her paw on the other hand. -

MD, how did you teach the stick em up trick please ?
Senji, how did you teach the poor you trick please ?
I'd like to have a go at these.
My last Basenji had his own trick where he would run upstairs backwards, i think he did it so he could watch you chasing him as he knew we didn't want him up there. I do wish i'd video'd it.
