  • Haha…

Sorry! The reception's breaking up a bit... I'm getting some attitudinal interference.

  • But it's got 2 antennas in the middle!

  • Oh goodness! That is just adorable! I want a martian just like that one. :)

  • Poor thing!:)

  • Ya poor guy wasn't to happy to wear it. He had just been neutered.

  • Awwww…. mine looked like that after he got neutered...

But in all seriousness, why did you all get your Basenji(s)?

When I started looking for a dog I knew nothing about the bread and wanted a Husky. Funny thing here is what i liked: Triangular ears, curled tail, athletic build, graceful walk and run, natural instincts... I bet you'd think I was talking about a Basenji. But its really what makes the Husky and the basenji similar in looks and attitude. Other Basenji Pros, cleanliness, NO BARKING (he does make noise in his crate), no panting and excess saliva (haha), smaller then husky, less hair-less shedding and beautiful Tri-Color.

I guess you can say, the more I read up on the Basenji the more I knew the breed was for me. :)

  • @Kenji24, I was in the same boat as you. I originally wanted a Doberman Pinscher. But my allergies wouldn't be able to tolerate such a big dog. My wife and I, looked through all the hypoallergenic dogs and the Basenji kept creeping up on us. Eventually we did our research and fell in love with the breed.

Of course no dog is completely dander free and at first i had trouble tolerating Frankies presence but eventually I became a bit more immune. I still act up from time to time but overall everything worked out! I'm still hoping one day to get a Doberman but i will never NOT have a basenji = )

  • How funny…poor little guy..the cone of shame..:)

  • @Kenji24:

But in all seriousness, why did you all get your Basenji(s)

I first knew of the breed as a teenager, loving their prancing movement. Later, in my early adult years, I saw one in San Francisco and squealed with delight. My sister Rose plugged her ears. I think the sound that came out of me was in the upper range of Mariah Carey's notes. When I knew my soulmate cat Barney was soon to pass over the Bridge, I began researching the basenji seriously. Believe it or not, I liked their headstrongness combined with the fact they loved to be a lap dog. For me, that was a perfect combination.

  • I thought this was about getting one, lol. We do have a great thread on why people got into the breed:

Hi everyone, Thanks for all of your replies! Rex just had his first vet visit (first with me at least), and he was given a clean bill of health. The vet that I saw also agrees with a lot of you that he looks like a Min Pin more than a Basenji, but he is likely still mixed with something because he's a bit too big to be a pure Min Pin. I've looked at a few DNA Dog Breed tests online, and they seem to range in price and in quality. It seems like some of the cheaper (~$50) tests are fake, but they go all the way up to almost $250 for the higher quality ones. Do any of you have experience with these DNA tests / have a brand you found reputable? I'll be sure to post the results of any of the tests with this forum! Thanks again, and Rex is doing really great in his new home!! [image: 1559586518913-img_3707-resized.jpg] [image: 1559586546977-img_3720-resized.jpg] [image: 1559586568474-img_3708-resized.jpg]

Ha! Years ago we had a chow-shepherd mix that would pull my husband around on a bike. Great fun for both of them except for random cat sightings…then the ride got a little scary! :p

Rafismom, we started him out in a crate, but he hated it. Cried something fierce. We then started leaving him in my son's room, and he was absolutely fine….well, until he started crying again. Then we gave him roam of the house while we were gone, and have had no problems at all. Yes, I know. I'm lucky! He absolutely hates for us to leave, but he's good while we are gone. No complaints here, for sure. Maybe it's the possible black lab that mixed in that makes him so calm? He has his moments, especially outside when he sees a squirrel, etc., but overall he's a very calm pooch. Just last week, I was walking the dog at a local park when I hear a woman saying something about the dog. She was a good distance away. I then realize she was talking to me and asked if my dog was friendly. I said, "yes" and she came over to pet him. She told me that the dog reminded her of her first dog. She said her first dog was a basenji. After more chatting, she said that it was actually a basenji mix, but that my dog looked a lot like hers. She told me how much she loved that dog and told me all sorts of stories about her. Such a nice lady. Gave me a few bits of advice and about a half hour later we parted ways. This is my first dog, and I've been amazed at how friendly other dog people are when I'm walking him. This has been a great experience.

Thank you very much for the info. I will have to try the time out. He was crate trained as far as being house broken, but now when I put brownie in the crate all he does is whine.. I do have 2 older dogs. one that plays with him and the other, well he just growls at brownie. The mother that was there when I got Brownie was a white shepard, maybe that is where the broad nose comes in.
