Private part bumps

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • My fiance just pointed out to me that Dexter has three little bumps on his penis sheath. They are really tiny, about the size of ant bites maybe, all three right around the tip/opening. They don't look exactly like bites though, they look more like little pimples or something? They don't seem to bother him, my fiance touched them to see if he would express discomfort. They are slightly reddish/pink around them. We will be calling the vet in the morning to see what he says, but I just figured I would post on here to see if anyone has any idea of what it may be in the meantime so that I can stop wondering quite to much.

  • Sometimes it is nothing more than a little skin irritation. I'd suggest using baby wipes to wipe the area. I have had precisely 2 male dogs in 40 yrs so not much help on the male parts of dogs. Horses, lol, yes. Dogs, not so much.

  • I use Nature's Miracle wipes to clean that area, around the stomach and the rear end after walks to keep it clean daily.

  • Well…I don't shave my dog's privates so I'm pretty sure it isn't razor burn. O.o
And thanks nobarkus and DebraDownSouth, I'll start using wipes!

  • My B occasionally get's those same types of little pimple type bumps by her privates as well…I just try and keep her clean and they go away...but do come back. She doesn't make any notice of it (extra licking in the area) so I am not concerned enough to take her to the vet at this point. I agree with the using the wipes...either baby wipes or a mild soap on a damp cloth. BTW my girls bumps are not quite on her privates but a little more north towards her stomach.

  • lol the razor burn person is troll spammer

  • I use unscented baby wipes to tidy up Kipawa's privates. He gets a bit of a wipe every evening.

  • Hmmm…it has never occurred to me that I should be wiping Blaze's (and Gracie's) private parts! We never did that with Maxx and in the 15 years we had him, never had a problem in that area. Guess I'll keep a closer eye on the two of them! :)

  • Thanks, everyone. We started wiping him once or twice a day. I hope the bumps clear up soon. :)

  • @joomakramjutt:

I am guessing razor burn, and some people guess by putting lotions on after shaving is best, but it is normally the cause.

Well. Regardless of whether this ….individual.... is a spammer...

It's funny and I don't care who ya are. LOL!!

  • Yeah, I knew he was a spammer, but I just figured I'd humor them. It is funny, but the other spam on the site that is completely random/irrelevant is just annoying.

Thanks so much for the feedback. We haven't changed his diet but he eats just about anything he finds in the yard. I'll call the vet and see what they say.

We've finally had some success with Butter's allergies – wiping his face, belly, legs, pads & between his toes after he goes for a walk in the field. It's been a long haul and he'd been reacting to fungi and plants in the aster family (ragweed, etc...). Because he'd eat grass, sniff it, and walk through it, he'd have terrible reactions and the "little" bumps under his coat started turning into bigger bumps. All set for now. If an elimination diet hasn't helped with the bumps, it could be an allergy to something in the environment -- try wiping Hotep down after she's been out and see if it helps.

How's Lenny's bump - did it go away? A few days after this post, I felt one on Daisy's left side on her rib cage. I thought it was wierd, but then last week, my husband said to feel the same area. It was a scab. I think she got bite by something. You know - summer bugs… Hoping Lenny's bump is gone now and he's feeling great...

It's settled then. I'm gonna pop it. :) I mess with it sometimes as well. Tucker just wants to sniff and lick my fingers after I'm done scratching at it…then he'll let me go back to work on it. As long as I let him sniff and lick my fingers as I'm messing with it, he'll let me continue and we'll eventually both bore of it and move on...

Thanks for the info. We went thorugh when the bumps first appeared and tried to take away anything that had changed recently to make sure wasn't allergic to something new in his enviroment and he's not had any changes in routine since then. At this point, if it is an allergy in the house, it probably is to dust but he hasn't had that same huge breakout in bumps just a few here and there. I'll try some supplements and maybe change shampoos to something that says no soap as saw that on some other posts. He doesn't seem to be bothered much, just a little itchy and the hair might be somewhat more thin but he doesn't have bare spots. It's really hard to be patient though when I just want to know what is causing it! Thanks again!

I don't know if they are in your area, (I doubt it) but Nala had bites on her from black flies that were red and itchy and more of a ringed look to them. I took her to the vet immediately, only to be told what they were! Boy did I feel silly…I'm sure you'll get to the bottom of it...
