  • quercus, Haha she must be. She is out of Select's Lothlorien Elentari (out of Moses) co bred by Tracy & Becky I think.
Not to mention, her breeder Chris did some crazy "super puppy" thing with the pups during their early days that has created a litter that is too smart for their own good.
Its insanity with her some days. Lola just likes to chew on inappropriate things; you can tell there is no intent behind it other than chewing on something yummy. Callie just likes mischief, plain & simple. She likes to push limits & see just how much she can get away with before I notice.

  • I suggest a big hook high on the wall to hang your knitting bag. Or return to synthetics!
Thanks for a funny (not to you) story. You will laugh about it…some day.

After Nicky destroyed the THIRD pair of my glasses, I started keeping them in a kitchen cabinet. I was the one who left them on a table, within her reach. She was just a dog who loves the crunch of expensive plastic. My bad.

  • Did you take a picture?! That yarn Basenji! Sorry, I meant "darn Basenji". :D

  • Been there. My dogs tangled and chewed up two balls of sock yarn and a skein of alpaca!! I have to be very careful when I bring yarn into the house. Spencer is very sneaky and will try to get it even when it is far back from the edge of the counter!! One time he had so much of it wrapped around himself that I had to cut him out of it!! I only knit on my lunch break at work now…..

  • i store most of my wool in Sterilite containers gotten from Target. Of course my basenjis are usually pretty good about leaving the wool sculptures. It's the toys that belong to the wool dogs that Zest likes to steal. Tiny, tiny 1/2 inch balls and the like.

  • Of course the whole time I'm frustrated with her, I'm also trying not to laugh. And I also have to keep telling myself "I'm the slow learner… this is MY fault. This is not her fault. Its mine. Mine only."
But alas, I am less easily trained than they are ;)

And I posted a picture of the yarn destruction on the first page I think...

  • While it has been warm (neighbor was SUNBATHING SATURDAY!)… don't move down. Give me colder winters and keep the humidity please. And the tornadoes and fire ants.

  • My B's don't care what the yarn is made of. If Momma is crocheting, she had better keep only the ball of yarn being used and the others in a closed & latched top box. I did get a neat thing for Christmas. It holds up to 8 rolls of yarn, each strand comes up thru a hole in the top, eight holes on top. I have not started a crocheting project since I received it, but am interested in how the Bs will try to get the yarn out of it. I have lost count of the number of skeins of yarn that I have had to rewind into usable balls, with lots of tie offs to reconnect the yarn. You just have to laugh.

  • So glad to know that I'm not the only crazy basenji owner who tries to knit & crochet. There is actually a basenji owner group on ravelry.

  • Hahahahahaha! This story just made my day!

Just wanted to give an update on my experience and hope that it helps others in the future. So I did get the puppy and have had her now for about 6-7 weeks. She is doing AWESOME! Shes completely healthy, and at 14-15 weeks, is incredibly obedient. For instance, I take her to the dog park, and she recalls every time I say "Nani come." There are also some agility obstacles in the park which I'm starting to train her on and she does really well with simple things like walking up, down, sitting, staying, gonig through the tunnels, etc… When I give her her food, I make her sit, stay, and give me a fist bump before she can eat, and I'll switch the order up every time. I then say "now you can have it" and then she eats. Its to the point now, where she is in the kitchen, and I'll go to my room, come back in 2-3min, and she is still sitting by the food and hasn't even touched it yet until I give the command. She is doing fantastic! Fantastic with other dogs, fantastic with kids, adults, everything. She doesn't have a tendency anymore either now to chew on things she's not supposed to and when she does get the urge, she looks for her toys. Not sure if this is just because the breed itself is very intelligent, or the breeder, or a mix of both but I couldn't have asked for a better puppy, especially the way she is now at the age of 14-15 weeks. My allergies also do very well around her whcih is HUGE! Not sure if I just got lucky or what, but she is great a puppy for how obedient she is already, her compassion, and her behavior. Just simply amazing :-)

@Basenjimamma: Basil boy..I am trying to understand what type of harness you are talking about. I have or maybe had (lost two leashes at the dogpark a few weeks ago, when son thought it fitting to fish with one and loose it, fish the first one out with the second one and loose it too..! )..any way..I have/had a leash that had a big metal loop by the collar that you threaded the leash after wrapping it around the body of the dog, so in essence it was a leash that could be used as a harness..is that what you are talking about? I think so… but my sister has never used it as a leash and it's not one straight long rope it's two long parallel ropes when it's all undone... But maybe this would serve as the same thing?

@BlueBell: She has gone to the vet to receive her shots but after doing some research wonder if dogs are being over vaccinated. Here in Jackson, TN our shots are yearly. They don't offer any 3 year shots. This may be the downside of living in a smaller city. Up to this point she has not been boarded and except for spending time once a month with her basenji cousins she is not around many other dogs. We don't have a dog park. This is why I would question needing a Bordatella every 6 months. It is the same shot as the one they gave for one year, just good for three. The standard now and has been for a few years (around here at least 6 or more) that they are covered for 3yr. Do some on line reseach about the recommendations and take them to your Vet…. you can start with Dr. Dodds... I think that you will find that most Vets are up to speed with the latest research and if not, they should learn...IMO.... and it might be a battle, but it is your dog... And unless you are going to board in a kennel facility, I would not even bother with Bordatella.. only protects on like 3 to 5 stains and there are hundreds.... I show mine all over and have not used Bordatella for over 15+ yrs.

Mine like the Buster Cube, and similar balls that hold kibble. Also stuffed animals (garage sales, thrift stores), and the anmials that make repeating noises with a squeeze. Nicky likes baby toys, like the ones that you pull a cord and it plays music. They have favotire stuffed toys they have had for years, and others die quickly. Nicky loves to steal my shoes and eat them, my husband bought her a purse of her own at a garage sale, lovely leather. She has been slowly working on it for many months, knows it is HERS. Mine have almost never liked real dog toys. Anne in Tampa
