Finding Kismet a playmate!

    It's time for Kismet to have a friend I think. But she'll soon be having a "different" buddy then most would get for their dog LOL. I'm limiting myself to two dogs and two cats, and as the dogs positions are full… a cat it will have to be! I've got a couple potentials who are being fostered with dogs, so I can be sure they will get along with one. I'm not able to bring her to their homes plus their about an hour from me so they can't come here :( So I'll just have to see how they interact with the dogs of those houses.

    I was able to finally see her with another cat today when I went to a shelter that'd allow me to bring her. It was really cute, the cat would smack her on her head very nicely (no claws!). Wish the room was bigger to see if they'd play chase. She didn't seem to know what to do with a cat that wasn't growling at her anytime she tried to touch it. The other two pets of the house are seniors and don't want anything to do with her ;)

    Tomorrow I have appointments to stop by two houses that have two kitties that might fit my needs. I can't wait! I would have just taken Blackjack (the shelter kitty) but I didn't want to rush into it. Wanna make sure my new baby is the right one!

    Just thought I'd share, I'm so excited :) I'll share some pics of them soon as the new addition gets comfortable.

    I was thinking about getting a kitten but I'm afraid she might hurt it accidently when she uses her paws/nose in play. So I'm checking out ones about 5 months that seem a lil more "sturdy" and can give a good smack back if needed to make her chill out ;)

    Here's the new playmate! He's got an URI so treating him right now, hopefully he'll feel better soon. Still getting used to Kismet running around and the new place so he hides a bit. His name was Blackjack in the shelter. I'm debating if I want to keep it or change it. Some other ideas I had were Mojo, Cashmere, Casanova, Whimsy…

    A tuxedo kitty! Years ago, we had a beautiful tuxedo girl. She charmed us for many many years. I am partial to bi-colour cats. My recently passed Barney was a beautiful orange and white.

    I hope your new kitty gets over his infection soon.

    I've decided on the name Faithful. It's the name of a cat in one of the series by Tamora Pierce, great read btw if ya like young adult fantasy type. Just didn't want a name bunches of pets might have like Mojo.

    We use ones from Rukka. Not sure if they’re available everywhere but they are they best ones we have tried (others always fell off, especially in deep snow). I think having two Velcro closures on each sock has been key. I also prefer the soft shell ones as our B seems to accept them more and they don’t twist as much as the ones with a hard sole.     @Kipawa: Does this mean that you are thinking of breeding in the future? Hi Fran! "Apollo", as we are possibly going to use as his call name…will be a show dog. Me and Sarah will not be the ones showing him at this time, Therese is going to do it for us. We haven't yet worked out all the details but he will be allowed to continue in Kevin and Therese's breeding program. Basenjis are very special to us and we are excited to be a bigger part of Kevin and Therese's "family". Unfortunately at this point we are still waiting to find out which boy it will be...has to be a good fit all-around. There has been talk of possibly getting one of the "men in black" boys Therese will be getting from Lisa in CA. The waiting is so hard! I hope everyday reveals improvement for Darrel. Give Kipawa a huge B hug from us.

    Markie, I think when adding a basenji to an existing household, it is most important to just get out and visit with lots of breeders and meet their dogs. Some families of basenjis get along great with other dogs and others are not as good. You really just need to be up front about your expectations and do some visits to see how the dogs are. That way you find a breeder with the temperaments you like and they know what you need in a pup and can match the pup with your household.

    sinbaje, this is why I appealed to the forum. I knew there'd be several smarter and/or more knowledgable people able to help me. The whole genetics thing is still way over my head, so I hadn't thought that Lola's mom COULDN'T be behind Booger (although yodeldogs may have explained this to me a dozen times and it didn't sink in yet)… Lola's mom was brindle I think. I know I was shown a picture of a brindle that was one of her parents anyway. The breeder's name is Carrie from what I remember. Her son's name is Destin Brown, and that's what her dogs are currently registered under (or Booger's & Lola's litters were anyway). She lived in Calhoun, GA (for all I know she's still there, but it seems she sold all of her basenjis after I explained Fanconi to her), and I know her sister helped her raise litters at her own house as well, so her sister might be named Tammy.

    Congratulations! Leo is so handsome. Nexa and Leo look like they have always been together, like they belong. Their jackets look warm and comfortable. Very nice pics. :)
