@senjisilly said in Basenji Puppy in US: Get Educated BEFORE you BUY I second this motion! Seriously... to quote the animal shelter I got my Aussie/Border Collie from during the holidays back in the day... "A dog is not for Christmas. It's for LIFE!" Let people who've been in this breed for some time, have contacts, know the in's and out's guide you. Picture in your mind a 15-year commitment. Help this breed by supporting responsible breeders who are passionate about the breed. How do you spot a Responsible Breeder? Insist on health testing PRIOR to breeding. Know your breeder's goals for the breed. Meet them! See if they're in @Zande's Pedigree Database. Read the Basenji Club of America Illustrated Standard on @tanza's site. Most of you won't ever show your dog and that's OK! Your breeder should know the Standard inside and out. They should be able to talk to it. Read it and ask them how their line supports the standard. Ask them what their breeding goals are, what they've been working on, where they are going, etc. That's fair. A good Basenji breeder is going ask you a TON of questions, AND THEY SHOULD! We want good solid safe homes for puppies, retired show dogs or dogs that don't want to show. Not every puppy will be a show dog. In fact, most won't be. Litters on average are between 4 and 6. Responsible breeders need pet homes for puppies that aren't going to part of their breeding programs. You can support responsible breeding by providing pet homes. Just make sure your breeder will make time for ALL your questions both before and AFTER the purchase. Mine will! :beaming_face_with_smiling_eyes:

@debradownsouth He was Arrested and then he died. I will refrain from posting Horse related posts. You just did not believe me when I said Horses are taken to Great Adventure. Now regarding the Basenjis relation to Wolves: Mu dog loved the Wolves and when I would walk the Wolf and the Dog in the Park the Dogs there which included Rotties, Saint Bernards, Bull Mastiffs all pulled their owner out of the Park because Dogs instinctively fear Wolves. Thannks!

Yes i have been very interested for a long time. Iv been in contact with a Breeder from England for a while now and they are expecting a summer litter. While iv been speaking to the breeder i feel comfortable that she will be more than helpful and is willing to all of the above. Like you said the price was the last thing on your mind, this goes for me too. I was just wondering along the lines so i could save to buy my puppy. Thanks for the help :)

Hi Patty, Linda own's both Rosie's sire and dam. However, I am the cobreeder, and I was there for her dam's birth, shepherded her to her reproductive vet appointments, and I own Rosie's aunt and great uncle. I participate con several other basenji lists that were active long before this forum so that usually takes up all my free posting time. :p. I currently have a pack of four, including Rosie's brother Ra. My oldest dog Nut is not a basenji, but was adopted as a rescue and was a lonely 9 month old only dog until she was six months old and Rosie's great uncle Khonsu came home as a nine week old puppy. They got along beautifully, and still do. Three years later, Khonsu's niece and Rosie's aunt Jane camecto live with us. While she was still a puppy, she and Nut got along, but once she matured the household tension started. They have had several blood letting fights, and I'veclearned how to manage the household without running two packs, but it is NOT easy, and I cannot recommend it unless the people involved are completely dedicated to making it work. Where two or more boys can get along, often two bitches are not a good pairing; they can really hold a grudge. Breaking up a dog fight is no fun, and I've got the scars to prove it. If Greg and Lisa want a companion for Rosie, I'm all for it when she gets to be 6 months to a year old. Then she will have bonded well with everyone in their family, and will be less likely to bond more with another dog than with the humans. She will be approaching adolescence, and they can do a better job of selecting a suitable lifetime companion for her and their family. Katy Scott
