All is good in the world again

  • We took our first vacation without pups in 4 years last week going on a Carribean cruise for my 50th birthday. Pups had it good as our son lives at home and was able to continue spoiling them in the manner to which they are accostomed. Unfortunately he works nights so they had to, perish the thought sleep in crates. We got in just before midnight and we greeted with lots of tail wags, zoomies and roos, nice to see we were missed a bit.

  • As I have gotten older, I find traveling without my b's isn't that much fun.
Cruising is fun…but I did miss my dogs too much.
We like driving trips where we take the dogs with us.

  • I ageee, we prefer to go with the dogs to places, the timeshare we own no longer has many places to trade for that allows pets, so we are giving our last couple weeks to friends instead of using them, then just doing RV events that all the dogs can attend too.

  • A Caribbean cruise sounds lovely - I bet you missed your Basenjis and isn't it lovely to be greeted like that on your return.

  • yes it's a shame we cant take our pups more places. Glad to see you have a good time and made it home safely.

  • We just got back from 5 days in Maui. Had to put our Laika in a kennel which we found after a long search. It was not easy to leave her there, she did ok we think. But was so glad to see us. We really hated to do this as we adopted her from a kennel 6 month ago. All our travel will now be by car only so we can take her. My husband had to pat everydog he saw in Maui. She is his baby.

Just wanted to give an update on my experience and hope that it helps others in the future. So I did get the puppy and have had her now for about 6-7 weeks. She is doing AWESOME! Shes completely healthy, and at 14-15 weeks, is incredibly obedient. For instance, I take her to the dog park, and she recalls every time I say "Nani come." There are also some agility obstacles in the park which I'm starting to train her on and she does really well with simple things like walking up, down, sitting, staying, gonig through the tunnels, etc… When I give her her food, I make her sit, stay, and give me a fist bump before she can eat, and I'll switch the order up every time. I then say "now you can have it" and then she eats. Its to the point now, where she is in the kitchen, and I'll go to my room, come back in 2-3min, and she is still sitting by the food and hasn't even touched it yet until I give the command. She is doing fantastic! Fantastic with other dogs, fantastic with kids, adults, everything. She doesn't have a tendency anymore either now to chew on things she's not supposed to and when she does get the urge, she looks for her toys. Not sure if this is just because the breed itself is very intelligent, or the breeder, or a mix of both but I couldn't have asked for a better puppy, especially the way she is now at the age of 14-15 weeks. My allergies also do very well around her whcih is HUGE! Not sure if I just got lucky or what, but she is great a puppy for how obedient she is already, her compassion, and her behavior. Just simply amazing :-)

The old adage - "A tired Basenji is a good Basenji" - comes to mind. :) Last thing we do at night before turning in is either walk ours or take her to the park. Then she gets a chew to keep her busy while we're getting ready for bed, then everyone's under the covers (she burrows). Even then, there are nights…especially if the cat is out and about being adventurous. You have my sympathy... :)

Mine like the Buster Cube, and similar balls that hold kibble. Also stuffed animals (garage sales, thrift stores), and the anmials that make repeating noises with a squeeze. Nicky likes baby toys, like the ones that you pull a cord and it plays music. They have favotire stuffed toys they have had for years, and others die quickly. Nicky loves to steal my shoes and eat them, my husband bought her a purse of her own at a garage sale, lovely leather. She has been slowly working on it for many months, knows it is HERS. Mine have almost never liked real dog toys. Anne in Tampa
