Looking for basenji female.

Locked Basenji Talk
  • i still have not found a female on those websits that are still intact.

  • What do you mean still intact??

  • meaning to breed.

  • Why do you want to breed? And if you do, first you should find a breeder as a mentor and learn about the breed (more then just having one) and what it means to become a responsible breeder. Learn about health testing and what tests should be done before even considering breeding.

  • i know everything about the breed. i have grew up with them and i have two right now that live with my mom but my female had to get fixed. thats why im looking for another female. we used to breed them but now we can't.

  • REMINDER::
before this thread gets out of hand. Just keep it friendly :)

Have you tried emailing one of the breeders on the website to see if they know anyone in your state?

  • Oh, wow…when you were breeding, did you do health testing and show your b's?

  • @basenjilover01:

Did you show or do performance events with your Basenjis when you were breeding and doing health testing? Obviously if prior to 2007, that was before the Fanconi DNA test, but other health testing that is recommended is Hips, Eyes, Patellas, Thyroid. And knowing offspring, siblings, sire/dam, grandsire/dam and their health is important too.

Now however, Fanconi DNA testing is really important.

I do have to say, I have been in the breed for 20+ years and I don't know everything about the breed….:)

    Let me get this straight…
You live with your bf, you have no car, you can't travel... not much funds, other dogs live with your mom, and you think you know enough to breed Basenjis?

Wow. Really? I think you probably know far less than even the typical byb, much less puppy mill. Why do I think that? Someone who really knows the breed would know what a can of worms your impressively uninformed post opened up. In fact it is so inflammatory I suspect you are really just a troll looking for attention.

I am begging you to stop looking for a dog to breed and make a buck off from, talk to breeders, read the sites they give you, get educated, and swear off being an irresponsible backyard breeder. You'll respect yourself in the morning.

Now, backing out of this thread because working with rescue and cleaning up after people who think they have a right to breed and create misery and hell, I am not the one today to provide you with calm education.

  • Debra, I didn't think of a troll…you could be right.

  • just because i dont have my own car doesnt mean that i dont know alot about the breed. and for your info my boyfriend works for y12 in oak ridge,tn which is a bomb plant for the goverment. yes me and my mom has bred in the past and yes we had everything tested on them. listen all im trying to do is find a female that i can breed with my moms male. i dont wont to argue with anyone.

  • assuming that you do know about the breed, about all the necessary health testing, etc., why do you want to breed? is there something special about your mom's male - has won some championships or has perfect conformation and temperament?

you don't seem to be very picky about what female you get. i don't know anything about breeding, but i do know that you should be looking for a dog that is health-tested and healthy, has good temperament and conformation, and is well-bred (and akc registered). it shouldn't just be whatever dog you find close to you.

i'm just suggesting that you evaluate your reasons for wanting to breed. do you want to keep all the puppies as pets, or are you hoping to sell the puppies?

  • Can you give us information on your male..Sire/dam and such? That would be helpful to help us see what lines your basenji come from..

  • yes he is akc registered. and i would have to have my mom look at his paper's to see what is sire's and dam's name's are. i would like to have a female that is registered or well bred. but it just seem's like everytime i look at one the prise on them is horrible and i gave 250 for the male i have now which is registered and has show bloodline's. and yes i wont to keep the puppies. like i have said in older post's i wont a female that will get along with a house cat and an 8 yr old little girl. i would love to find a pup that way it will grow up with the cat and little girl that way the pup dont think that the cat is lunch.

  • didn't you post in another thread you were looking for a female for around 250$? Maybe things were different when you used to breed but between 800-1000$ is typical and usually isn't baswed on whether the pup is for show or pet. If breeding is what you want to do then truthfully, price should be the last factor you should be concerned with.

  • I always thought Vickie of Rugosa basenjis did an excellent job of explaining why well-bred dogs cost what they do. Her webpage is a few years old, so we now have a Fanconi test and I'm sure prices have increased.

    http://www.rugosabasenjis.com/
then scroll down and click on the Puppy Prices link

I'm also wondering how involved with rescue you are. Most reputable breeders take pride in helping basenji rescue.

  • @basenjilover01:

ROFLMAO. Sweetie I grew up next to Oak Ridge, I have many SCIENTIST FRIENDS who work in the OR labs and that you call it a "bomb plant" is pretty funny. Second, really? What was the registered names of ANY dog you bred. Obviously you aren't aware it takes about 5 mins to find out if you actually did any testing.

    @basenjilover01:

yes he is akc registered. and i would have to have my mom look at his paper's to see what is sire's and dam's name's are…. has show bloodline's.

Most puppymill dogs are AKC registered. Most puppymill dogs have registered dogs somewhere.

That you do not KNOW his name tells the world you haven't a clue. Someone who KNOWS can tell you sire, dam back 4 generations, titles, health clearances… off the top of their heads.
My PET laying on the bed, spayed, has champions every generation for 5 generations.. she's spayed. WHY? Because she shouldn't be bred, nothing special about her. Get a rescue or save up your bucks to buy a pup from a responsible breed that WILL be spayed and have a pet. You are not ready to breed any more byb dogs.

  • its really nice to know that people such as yourselfs claim to be very good breeders or whatever you wont to call yourselfs, you know my friend told me that this is a nice websit for people to chat about basenji's, well i guess my friend is wrong because all i have talked to is snooty ass people on here who think their st dont stink all because they own a basenji and their rare. well let me tell you something if any of my friends ask me about this websit im going to tell them i dont recomend them usin this sit cause you all are asshole's and rudd as hell. i dont give a flying fk if the female is well bred i dont care if she is registered. as long as she is full blooded basenji and has great health, i dont care. my female at my moms is not registered and we sold her pups for 250 and ill be damned if im spending more than that on a dog. so all of yall can go to hell in my book. i have read somemore poeples threads on here that you all have talked to and yall are rudd to them! now i see why their aint maney people on here talking much anymore because yall are rudd and hateful. im speaking my mind and if any of yall dont like well thuff titty said the kitty when the milk went s***y more in less yall can kiss my full blooded cherokee ass cuz as far as im concered this websit sucks! and i wont ever use it again!

  • and for your info as well. yes y12 is a bomb plant i have been down there several times to pick up my boyfriend and the always ask why im there who am i and i have to give them my drivers license and i have done my research on the basenji's as well y12 so you people think that you all are better than everyone else well i hope you know your not everyone is equal! just because you have a rare dog doesnt mean you have to make people think you know it all when you dont! people like that these days are so funny but when people start proving your wrong is when its so funny cuz then you feel like the lowest man on the pole then. and i just sit back and laugh. lol… this websit is a joke!

@scewbydoo One of our vet techs volunteers with the shelter where she was born. Her mom was labeled as Jack Russell. Her goofy nature makes me think Boxer mix, but who knows. The shelters down in S. TX aren't the most accurate at breed identification. I once had a shelter in San Antonio send me a picture of a brindle Basenji they wanted me to pull...it was a calico cat. Regardless of breed, Roxy is home.

Wouldn't feel bad about the behavior of your basenji. I got mine six years ago and he acts a lot like yours. I kennel trained him and when I have company he goes in the kennel till he settles down. When I let him out I just tell people to be still till he checks them all out then he is fine. A lot of times he acts like he is going to attack me if he doesn't get his way vicious snarls and all, but I have learned it is just that an act . He also acted vicious around other dogs but after introducing them properly he gets along great. We have recently got him a new basenji mixed sister to play with, after the snarls and viciousness he loves her very much. I wouldn't be afraid to rehome your basenji, it at least give someone a chance to see what they can do.

@Mr: I guess B's aren't the only ones. I just love the captions on these photos! So clever! I have to over see any toys I have with Uzie and Candi my hound mix (to whom Uzie is really bonded) She starts the destuffing, and he gladly finishes it. Kongs and the like are the only thing I can leave in the toy box. The first week I had him, he swallowed the tail end of an unstuffed toy. Biggest hair ball I ever saw! then I had to bring him for a barium study as he just was not right….I have been paranoid ever since! But, he only tears and does not swallow now, I think he was so excited to be out of a crate and just started the mouthy puppy stage "lets see what this world is made of" at age 18mos. I can't help but laugh when he wants to remind me of dinner time and he picks up the end of a doggy bed and looks at me to see if I am aware of him...

Oh Barklessdog, you are a brave person. I must now stand with you in insane-solidarity and admit I bought it too. It is awful but when you get the line "we couldn't say goodbye so we took him home" part, you know you got to help support the woman. lol

Love the picture of Achilles - that "one paw in the air" stance is really nice - my girl, Shaye, stands like that when she is considering whether she can get to a squirrel or some other thing before the leash runs out…....

Oh WOW, you guys are sooooo helpful. Thanks DDS for the link, that was especially helpful. I'm just intrigued with this breed for some reason, and I'm not sure why. Reading what all of you have to say is better that the typical things that you read on the computer. They all just repeat the same thing over and over where as all of you can give me personal experiances. I know all puppies are a lot of hard work, but compared to other dog (which I see some of you have had other breeds) are they actually a lot tougher? All pups like to chew and get into trouble but are they especially hard to train. Lets say with housebreaking and such? Oh and for all of you that have cats too, do they stay out of the kitty box or are the prone to make there way there, if you catch what I'm saying. I read they they are very clean and often times will clean themselves like a cat does. Really? And they are aloof like cats? Soooo much info and I would rather hear all of this from you than get false info. HELP!!
