Kipawa nighttime peeing

We have a bit of a problem with Kipawa. He is in his 17th week now, and I am wondering if I should be expecting him to hold his pee all night. Over the last week I have had to wash our bedspread a few times. And it always seems to be in the same place on our bedspread, which we wind up double washing.
I remove his water by 7 p.m. at night and we are in bed by 10:30 p.m. I make sure he has had a couple of pees outside between 8 - 10:30 p.m., with the last pee break right before we bring him onto our bed for the night.
If it takes setting an alarm for me to get up and take him out for a pee around 2:30 a.m., I am fine with that. When we get up at 7:30 p.m. I take him outside right away and he pees immediately.
So, basically he is in bed with us for 9 hours. Too long for a puppy to hold it?

If I remember right, when I brought the girls home at 9 and 11 wks, I would take them out about 2 or 3am….. And I think I did that until they were about 4 months.... then they could usually hold it all night.
If he was holding it before now and this is something new, I would first have his urine check for UTI and if that is OK, then I would try for a couple of weeks getting him up at 2 or 3..... then see if that makes a difference.

I've been always told to take the puppy's age (by months) and add 1 to it, and that's the number of hours they should be able to reliably hold it.

So that would mean Kipawa can hold his pee for 5 hours, which is a little longer than how often he goes during the daylight hours.
Looks like I will be buying myself an alarm clock that wakes me up!

Thanks for the response, Pat. I'm going to get his urine checked at the same time he has another shot coming up, early next week. Better to be safe.

Or you can just collect some of his urine in a container and drop it off at the vet…

Maybe this helps, at first Ayo would pee outside when I took him out, but I always left some newspaper in a corner and when he couldn't hold it he would go there, ( don't ask me who taught him that!!!) so I didn't have to wake up at two or three am, he would just use the paper and go back to sleep. Eventually I would wake up and the paper would be dry, until I didn't need it anymore!! I can't remember how old he was, but I never got up to take him out. Only the other day when he had diareah, then he woke me up!!!!

Except if you have carpet then that wouldn't work!!!, but maybe the pee pads..

Mine have been closer to 5 months before they could hold it all night. My 2 whippets still get up to poop mid way thru the night.

I think Zoni was able to hold it through the night around the same age if she slept in the bed. She could definitely hold it for 9 hours or more if sleeping. If she was in a crate that was another story. During the day should could not hold it that long either.

Hope would get up a couple of times a night to go. (but she always had water). We didnt mind too much as once she was old enough to battle the stairs she would take herself out (perhaps worth teaching?). Now at 7-8mths of age she only goes once if needed through the night (where she takes herself out), otherwise sleeps through.

So is it odd that Pippin does sleep thorugh the night..is he not drinking enough water maybe? We have issues, normal issues with accidents through the day if I don't see his cues..well it seems there aren't any cues, but at night he sleeps like a champ. He sleeps with Moses in Moses' crate (much to Moses' dismay)…door open and halfway through the night sometimes later he comes to our bed and whines to come up, I put up by me and he falls back to sleep..

I don't know if it's odd or not, but when we got Maxx at 11 weeks of age, he slept through the night from the first night, too.

I think they are all different… and sometimes baby puppies sleep so sound they pee in their sleep... as I don't think that the brain is totally connected to... "I have to pee".... ggg
Keep in mind that Mom's encouraged peeing/pooping by cleaning and licking them... and most times that was when they are sleeping..... -

Although Pippin didn't have a mom after 10 days, she passed away.

Which would maybe make a difference, however…. the "human" would have had to do the stimulation... (obviously not by licking :eek:)

Dmey, she passed away from acute uterine infection…very sad indeed.

Last night I set the alarm for 3:30 a.m. and got up to let Kipawa pee. That worked out fine for him, but I am bagged this morning. We'll do this for a little while, and gradually increase the hours until he eventually sleeps through the night.
First thing in the morning he is out until I drink my coffee and quickly read the newspaper. He doesn't like it - there is some separation anxiety happening when I am not sitting outside with him. But I will keep to this routine. Eventually I believe he will get to know that outside in the a.m. does not mean his mommy is abandoning him.
Our home is one level, and we do not have a doggy door. Somehow I don't think he would willingly go outside at night on his own as during the day, even if we leave the back door open, he does not venture out. I don't think he is a fan of the damp grass for doing business.
