Missing whiskers– ADVISE?

  • I would worry about mites, which can spread. I also would worry (and i hate to say this) about something INTERNAL such as cancer making her rub her outer muzzle. Please let the vet check. Two weeks is a long time for something to continue, whether as mild as mites or even infections.

  • okay– now im a little freaked once you mention cancer!!! My moms dog did have a mange and so did my cousins dog so im hoping thats all it is..... I called and made an appointment.

    thanks ladies

  • I think that is the best, lets us know how it works out. If nothing else, you can eliminate things. Sarcoptic Mange is contagious, so if this is what your Mom's and cousin's dog had, very likely this could be the cause. Remember also, that they will not always see the mite with a scraping, be sure to tell the Vet about the other dogs having mange. Sarcoptic causes horrible itching, compared to Demodex mange that causes no itching.

  • Ella scratched off almost all the whiskers on one side of her face a couple of different times in the first several months that we had her. Eventually, we chalked it up to anxiety. Her transition to our home was quite difficult for her and she had lots of stress-realted behavoirs. But the scracthing of the whiskers was definitely one of them.

Is there any new or on-going stress in her life?

  • Pat, demo actually can cause itching, especially if it becomes generalized and gets infected.

Not usually, I know that it can, especially if left untreated, but usually it is not that itchy… at least not in my experience

  • What is mange??? I have never heard of this????

Im glad my doggie iant the only one.

I am pregnant. we are moving things (room switches) making room for our first baby. Her nose looks fine other than the fact that she has no whiskers on one side. It does not look irritated at all.

My moms dog had mange, but was not contagious. I'm not sure what kind it was, he had eaten away at his paws till they bleed. My cousins dog didnt have mange, she said it just sratched and they put a cone on and it resolved itself??????

ill still take her in :) thank you everyone!

My old girl Ella had a shattered rear leg from being hit by a car. My options were amputation or surgery. I opted for surgery. She did have a plate inserted but that was because she had bone pieces removed and the plate was there to connect what was left of her leg bones. We had casts, lots of casts. The vet told me to keep her quiet, not let her roam around, absolutely no stairs, and to wear an e-collar if not well supervised. Ella did not listen to the vet. I blocked the stairs with a baby gate but she managed to jump it while wearing the cast which went all the way up her leg. She perforated her e-collars to where I could use them as colanders. I also had to find a high calorie food (not high protein but high calorie) because the veterinary surgeon said she would need twice the caloric intake in order to heal quickly. I ended up hand feeding her a mix of kibble and canned food. She healed fast and well. Ella ended up with a slightly shorter rear leg but she could still run like the wind. She lived 11 more years and died at age 14.5. I have seen photos of the halo type device on one of the Facebook groups, "Basenji". You may have to join the group but here is the link to the post https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1904813413071092&set=gm.1407068002664730&type=3&hc_location=ufi I am sure you can contact the owner of this dog, Maria Eriksson‎, but please remember that English is not her native language as the "Basenji" group is international.

I REALLY wanted the plaque vaccine to pan out. When it came out, my vets (who are cautious) said to wait a couple of years. Well, it has been found safe, but they discontinued it as it doesn't work. I really need a miracle. Though the truth is, she is good about it now and heck, I spent more time grooming the chow 2x a week than I do brushing her teeth every night. I still have to get them cleaned every 3 mos though. My vet recommended trying a water pik. ROFLMAO, me and what army? Sigh. So we just keep getting them cleaned. For the record, she isn't forming tartar, it is the actual plaque her gums react to. http://veterinarynews.dvm360.com/dvm/Breaking+News/Pfizer-discontinues-production-of-veterinary-perio/ArticleStandard/Article/detail/718560

@YodelDogs: I cannot even begin to fathom any normal diagnostic tests that would cost $1,000? A senior profile at my vet clinic includes a physical exam, complete blood panel, urinalysis, and fecal exam is is only about $100. LOL give me your vet's name. At my vet it's nearly 200. I'll drive to Atlanta! To the OP, yes get urine tested for infection first. Bladder/kidney could cause lots of pain walking and picking up. Start simple. Also, on the weight….I know folks here get tired of my saying it, but... first treat for worms even if none show up in fecal. DO NOT USE OTC, get from vet. Then, order cyproheptidine. It is a cheap antihistamine that works miracles with increasing appetite. My basenji was getting to the bone stage, massive testing... all normal. She simply didn't care if she ate. No matter what your vet says, you don't go by AMOUNT for what is right, you go by results. If they eat and are thin, they need MORE FOOD or food with higher calories. Also, you might try something like FASTRACK, healthy bacteria which helps them USE the food they eat much better.

I thought I had it under control then I put advantage multi on her-baaaaaaad mommy! A few more weeks-hopefully-then I can start again with her food. There is a new food out there that has no potato in it. It has tapioca. I'm going to try it. I haven't even had her tested yet b/c it will cost a fortune up here. She was doing okay b/f the advantage multi-if I can get her back to that state I'll be happy.
