Owner with the Flu

  • First Basenji's

OK, so I just got back from the doctor and I have the Flu… Sucks I know. But I am concerned for my 5 month old Basenji, Kenji. Should I be? He sleeps on me quite a bit but not in our bed. With him running around and grabbing everything in his site its impossible for me to sterilize or clean everything I have touched. I dont. Good thing I went to the doctor right away and was given meds.

Should I be worried? should I stay away from my best friend? Can he get it? if so, what is the treatment for him?

  • Dogs can't catch the flu from you.

EDIT: I should have said rarely… and only H1N1 so far as I can find.

  • I am also under the impression that dogs and humans cannot exchange cold or flu viruses. I think rabies is one of the few diseases that can be exchanged between our species.

I assumed your biggest concern about having the flu is how your dog is going to get exercise while you are sick. That is usually my biggest problem.

Well I didnt know they couldn't get the flu. Thanks for the info. The makes me feel better.

Since I live in an apartment his exercise is a concern all the time, but its I can at least get out once a day with him.

    Actually there are more,

    http://oregonvma.org/care-health/zoonotic-diseases-dogs (more complete list)

and in rare cases, some flu may be transmitted… it just isn't common. There has been ONE case I found in the US:

In fact I read long ago that when a human family keeps getting streph throat, they suggest the dogs be tested as they can get it and keep infecting the humans!

Sweet, Thanks. I guess I was looking up basenji specific information and I didnt see any thing in the books I have. I dont get sick much so i shouldn't have to worry. I'm actually feeling better today, not that he cares.

@Saving Thanks so much for the information! I am researching further and continuing with her rehab exercises as best I can. Glad you recovered from your spinal injuries.

Although natural care products / removed URL / for dogs are generally safe, there are still potential risks and side effects to consider. Some dogs may be allergic or sensitive to certain natural ingredients, causing skin irritation or other adverse reactions. Additionally, natural products are not regulated the same way as prescription drugs, so it's important to research the product and manufacturer carefully to ensure their safety and effectiveness. Always follow the product instructions carefully, and start with a small amount to monitor potential reactions. Finally, consult with your veterinarian before introducing any new products, especially if your dog has a preexisting health condition or is taking other medications. Taking these precautions can help ensure the safety and effectiveness of natural care products for your furry friend.

@Rebel - Full blood workup including full Thyroid panel (full panel no just what the normal vet workup that is not a full thyroid panel)... as they say make sure that he is in good health. Also what are you feeding him? How much total are you feeding a day? Also with reducing food, add veggies to his food to fill his belly... green beans are good to use... I use Cauliflower and Broccoli... Note also that low normal is typically too low for Basenjis.

@serenjane My Kembe had the freckles on her neck - more pronounced in summer months w/ the sun and also as she aged. I use to call her my little 🦒 giraffe. 😂

To give you an idea of the contrast between Basenjis and Border Collies, my BC once spit out a pill, I said "Blackie" in a disapproving tone, and he picked it up from the floor and swallowed it!
