I have an alpha female basenji and brought a newborn into our family. I was in the hospital for four days (my in laws stayed with dog and horse), when we came home, we had my Mom bring her new boyfriend. He was a great distraction, but also allowed me some alone time with Cricket. When they left, she noticed the baby in the bassinet and was a bit concerned.
She adapted to the baby, but I don't leave them alone just in case. Cricket is not nearly as jealous as she was, now that he drops food for her at the table, but she did get a bit jealous for a few weeks.
While I was pregnant, I was told that 'the test' was to play baby crying videos on YouTube. How the dog reacts will tell you how they will interact with the baby. Cricket beat the crap out of my phone when I tried… So not a great test! 🙂
Another basenji story

Hi all,
Just wanted to share - when I joined this forum in February, we only had one basenji, a tri girl Lana (we also have an akita and a boxer, but that's beyond the point). Then we got on a waitlist for another puppy, a brindle girl. And we actually got her! She was the most gorgeous thing I've ever seen, and so soft, and cute, and cuddly. I was so ecstatic! Well, long story short, a couple of really bad things happened in our family two days after we got her, and I had to take her back to the breeder. That probably was one of the saddest things in my life. Well, now, 8 month later, we still only have one basenji, our Lana. But now I just completed all the required health tests, waiting for results. If everything comes back normal/good/clear/etc, we will be breeding Lana this fall! Hopefully at least one of the puppies will be a red girl, and then we are going to keep her, and we will have TWO basenjis! I can't wait, keeping my fingers and toes crossed!

Oh how sad, i'm sorry to hear you had a bad time and had to return your little brindle girl
Hope Lanas test comes back ok -
Hope everything works out okay this time

Hope all goes well with Lana and your tests are good. So sorry you did not get to keep your baby one.

Well I finally got tired of waiting and called OFA today. So far, I have results of two of the tests: Her hips are ok, and her Fanconi is clear/normal. Waiting for the eyes and they thyroid results! Eyes should be ok according to the vet, just need the CERF, so the only one I am really waiting for is the thyroid.

What was her actual hip rating?
-
Don't know yet, haven't received the actual papers, they just told me over the phone that everything was ok.

What was her actual hip rating?
How do you find out what the actual rating is? Got the papers yesterday, it just says "GOOD" on it.
-
Good is the rating. There are 3 ratings that are considered normal hips: Excellent, Good, and Fair. In our breed we see many of HD dogs come from families with a family history of Fairs.

Ah, ok… Sorry for the silly question, still new to all of that...

Does anyone know when the results appear on the OFA website?
-
They usually appear within 2 weeks of being recieved in the mail. Sometimes sooner than that sometimes later.

Here's an update on Lana:
since the Hips/Eyes/Fanconi is all good/normal/clear (still waiting for thyroid), we actually went ahead and selected the male, absolutely stunning Ch. Bushbabies Red Ryder, from Bushbabies Basenjis in Livermore, CA. Waiting for Lana to come in heat! They are a very good match, body and personality, should be pretty nice puppies!
