Licking pee

Behavioral Issues
  • I would like to say that Oden is almost house trained as he rarely has any accidents anymore however the other day and this morning when he had an accident I noticed he has started licking his pee.

Can someone explain to me why he is doing this and how i can stop it?

  • Jayden does the same thing. Once in a while he will have an accident and I usually figure it out when I spot him licking up the pee. (Of course….he also eats poop. So apparently his dietary standards are very low. No kissing him on the lips!!)

  • There was talk about this just a few days ago. Go to heading Basenji Health Forum
then click onto Basenji Health Issues and Questions.
I think it was the 11th one down Urination Problem and read what is there.

  • thanks Rita Jean i had a read still doesnt really explain why as i have never punished him for peeing inside only a firm no and then taken outside to finish maybe ill ask the vet when we go for a check up next weekend

maybe he is ashamed of going inside and knows it bad so cleans up after himself afterall they are very clean dogs

  • I went to google and entered in why do dogs lick there pee and lots of things came up. You might want to read some of them. There was one called tendlite about dogs licking urine. Good Luck

That would be my best guess. He probably knows it's wrong regardless of any prior correction.

  • You have a smart B!:) He's hiding the evidence!!!!:):)

  • Basenjis are typically a very clean dog… I don't find it difficult to believe that if they have an accident, they are trying to clean it up... in the wild, it is the scent that attracts preditors...

When Kananga had his UTI awhile back, he had an accident early in the morning and was essentially laying in his own urine. I only found out about it so quickly because I heard him licking up something. He was trying to clean his fur and the surrounding area. He didn't even bother getting up, partly because I believe he felt ashamed and didn't want to draw attention. Poor guy. He had the saddest look in his eyes when I brought him over to the bathtub.

Zoni has always done this if she has had an accident in her crate or x-pen outside of the litter box. I'd think she does it out of cleanliness. I doubt the behavior is out of shame. Granted, it's a different context, but i'd imagine this is very similar to a bitch cleaning up after her pups…cleaning the den and avoiding attraction of predators.

Exactly… and males will do the same... maybe not in the same context... but the same basic principle....

  • Can I ask…my previous guy seemed to actually lick himself just so he wouldn't have an accident. Usually when I had left him for longer than normal 'cause I had errands or something. I would come home, let him out of the crate, but I always wanted to change clothes first and while I was changing he would, sometimes, just lick and lick, until we went out. Was he just putting up with me and being a really good dog?! Or being a perv?!

Btw, let me add… after about 5 mos, neutering often has NO effect on marking behavior. You should also treat ANY new dog, puppy or adult, as a puppy. Which means you either have them leashed to you, crated, or actively watching every single move. It is far easier to stop marking from starting (or any bad behavior) than correcting it once establish. You also need to go back to that when marking or other unwanted behaviors start. Sure, it's a pain in the butt, but easier than letting it become a habit then try to retrain.

Alfie is now 10 months old and still as naughty as hell. Yesterday evening, he was kept in the hall as the covers that we normally put over the leather sofa were being cleaned. This was not to his liking so he promptly found a way into my Son's bedroom and pee'd all over his bed. This is about the fifth or sixth time he's done this. Not impressed!!

Many puppies will totally forget about house training when they really start to teeth…. so just always go back to housetraining 101

Because she spent so much of her young life in a crate.. it will be a struggle, IMO, for her to get the idea that it is not an acceptable place for pee/poop… time, I think will reverse the behavior, but I would also say that she will "never" be trustworthy in a crate.....
