Looking to trace Roxy's background - Basenji x Border Collie

Basenji Rescue
  • Hello all,

I made my way here in the hope of finding out where my Basenji x BC exactly came from and, if possible, would love to try and trace some of her littermates if there are any, that is. I know it's a bit much to ask, though, any information I do find would be very helpful.

She's around 8 1/2 years old and apparently came from Dumfries, southern Scotland, UK, after an 'accidental' mating. Her mother is supposedly a tri colour Basenji and the father a BC.

Now, I'm not sure but as far as I'm aware the litter was handed in to the local rescue centre in Dumfries, how Roxy ended up on the west coast of Scotland I don't know.

After speaking to a couple of members on here at the SKC show on Sunday, they were able to tell me Roxy is one of Sandy's litter. (I have no idea whether you meant the dog's name was Sandy or the owners!).

Any more information at all would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks. :)

  • Presumably nobody knows any more information other than what I'm already aware of?

  • Hi Nicola,

Can't be of much help myself but maybe someone might know something.

  • Hi Nicola. I think Roxy's mother may be from Zande Basenjis?? Sally Wallis is the breeder. I'm not 100% sure but I do know that Sally bred a tri bitch which went the the dumfries area. Sally is on this forum her forum name is Zande. Maybe she will be able to help.

    Hi Vicki,

Thanks for this info, I've posted Sally a message to see if she can help me. Fingers crossed!

ETA: On Sunday I thought you said 'Sandy'!

Ahh Sally that would explain it then. Hope you can find out more info about Roxy.

  • Actually, the more I think about it, I think it was a dog not a bitch of Sally's that was in Dumfries. Either way, Sally is a font of knowledge and her pedigree database is amazing. If you visit her website you can find out all sorts of stuff about Bs etc. :) www.zandebasenjis.com

    Ah, thanks for that!

I've told Roxy that her mum's a Basenji, and now it seems she was a BC. Poor Roxy! She'll be confused now! :D

We are in San Antonio and are looking for one or two Basenjis. We had our previous two Basenjis for 16 years. They were two girls and half sisters. What are their ages? Do they get along with indoor cats.

We rescued our current B from Medfly - just north of LA. Karen at Medfly was wonderful to work with and we love our little girl!

Our Mickey gets pretty nippy when excited, too, and it was much more of a problem when he had those crazy sharp puppy teeth, but now at 1 yr old he responds pretty quickly to "gentle" and "kisses", "no bite" prompts. But when he gets too worked up I have to just walk away because his first instinct is to mouth & he doesn't seem to know his own strength. Someone mentioned winter activities - I would strongly suggest looking into getting a Varsity Ball (if you google it it should come up) - they are indestructible and big! Def for outdoor only. My guy likes to roll his around and try to stand on it - it's pretty funny. And it's almost the only time you'll hear him growl and bark - he gets so worked up with it that I have to put it away sometimes or else the neighbors will think he's vicious (he sounds it when playing with this thing!). BUT he comes in from outside panting and exhausted, so it's a nice alternative for him. I would caution, though, that bc the ball is really hard, he's knocked it into our rain spouts and caused them to fall down. So just be careful if you have anything outside that could get damaged.

Figula as you live in Peterborough just to let you know that it is our club show on 28th March (Sunday) We are the Basenji Owners and Breeders Association and you are very welcome to come along. If you come at about midday, you could have lunch with some Basenji people and say hallo to us and our dogs. The venue is Alconbury Village Hall. If you're interested I can send you details.

Thank you for opinions! I don't think she is in any danger in the sanctuary but probably it would be nice to let them know that she might be a basenji - more chances to get adopted. And there's absolutely nothing from a shar pei in her!
