Basenji: 2; Squirrels: 0

Basenji Talk
  • I got up this morning and went outside to say hi to dogs. Lana was playing with something that she was very reluctant to give up. When I finally got ahold of it, it turned out to be a squirrel tail! Then I went searching around the yard, and found a couple of small pieces that seemed to be the remnants of the squirrel! Those dogs ate the entire thing - fur, bones, all - except the tail. Sorry, no pictures - too graphic. I am 100% convinced that it was Lana who caught the poor thing, the other two dogs are two slow to do that. This is the second squirrel this year. The first one was a few months ago. That one I managed to see them drag around the back yard, and I took it from them when it was still alive. It was too severely damaged and had to be humanely finished. This one was not that lucky. Just for those who are going to say that squirrels can transmit diseases - I know all of that, and I am not particularly happy about them catching the squirrel, but nothing I can do. We have huge old trees and squirrels come to the yard all the time. Plus my dogs have all the shots imaginable.

  • I would do more frequent fecal tests, to make sure the dogs didn't get any worms from
    their "catch".

  • With catching and eating yard critters, that can lead to tape worm… so good to have their stool checked more often

And your right, that is what dogs do.... catch and eat!!!

  • Yep. They also get dewormed 3-4 times a year (same schedule as my horses, easier to keep track that way). What surpized me is that Lana is really picky with her meals, even with treats and she eats dirty nasty squirrel, hair and all… yuck!

Yuck for us…. "fresh kill" for them...

    Well put…gggg

  • I think your dogs are giving you a silent hint to change their food into BARF ;-)
I would not worry about the squirrels, frankly if they were in good shape of body and mind they would not be caught by a basenji ;-)

    That's what worries me!

@Sass7656 - Many a Basenji would prefer to be only dogs..... and certainly I agree with crate training, I do not believe in leave 2 in one crate regardless of the size.... next to each other but in separate crates.... I agree with Debra, you could have just as easily come home to a disaster....

My Basenji Billy is quite undershot; he's a purebred, his bottom jaw just didn't stop growing when it was supposed to. That's okay, I'm a bit of a sucker for a dog with an underbite anyway.:) He was my first rescue Basenji.

our garden is loaded with fieldmouses at the moment…. my B's do not care very much but my Ibizan hounds snack them all the time, sometimes they bring one inside for me to have, as a present, and they look quite offended when they notice I throw their delicious present in the garbage can ....

So far my gate is still working. We don't ever step over the top though, I'm hoping Moses doesn't try to go over the top if he doesn't see us do it? He does try and throw his weight at the area thats latched to break thru :) Lets hope he does figure it out, he's still just a puppy.

@phoenix3: Looks like a B to me but i think more of a B mix he looks like he has corse hair Maybe be has the size of a cattledog body and a basenji head :) My Aspen is a cattledog/ terrier mix he has the body of a cattledog {the colors} and the height and face of a terrier heres a pic so u can see the colors of the cattledog well one color anyways :D :D phoenix3 - this is Aspen? I'm so amazed at her spots, because my Daisy has spots like Aspens. We know her mother is pure R/W Basenji and she is thought her other half Beagle. One of her other litter mate moms thought Blue Healer (cattledog). But I subscribed to the Beagle. Daisy could be … Cattle Dog I suppose. She's bigger than Duke now at almost 9 months old. I will show her off soon on "Show Off" forum soon.
