Another Basenji in CT!

    I went to a board gaming party today and when I walked in I was greeted by a R/W female basenji!!! The owner said she rescued her from a family that had a pit bull and the basenji and the pit got into a big fight. I could see large scabs on the basenjis head and neck - didn't look like she was the winner. She said she was probably a puppy mill dog - I noticed she still had her dew claws. Not sure if that's really indicative of anything, but she sure was a cutie! 6.5 years old and very mild mannered. I asked the owner if she knew much about basenjis and she said no so I told her about Fanconi and the strip testing and the genetic tests.

    She also told me that she did pretty well off leash but then recounted how one time she ran into traffic and got run over by a truck! Luckily she was still alive and has been pretty well recovered…

    Cute little B..... so excited to have met another!

    Sounds like the poor thing has had it rough. My new rescue has his dew claws. No big deal, they'll just need to be trimmed like the others. Will you have another chance talk to her?

    I will probably see her again at another game night - but in the meantime I sent her an email w/ info on the protocol and monthly testing stuff. I hope I didn't come off as crazy w/ all the information overload but since I just went through it all w/ Tayda being diagnosed w/ Fanconi - I know how important it is and it's SO easy to think "I got MINE from a responsible breeder, so she can't have it."

    I also told her about the great forum we have here so hopefully she'll join!

    I sent the girl with the B I met the other day an email with info about Fanconi and about strip testing and the genetic test. Sadly I heard nothing back from her - I'm afraid maybe she didn't want to hear about it? Hopefully she thinks about it and does the strip testing.

    That is turly all you can do, right/ inform and hope they take it to heart. Good for you for informing her, hopefully she reads up and follow through on it.

    i lived in ct for years recently moved out to dc area, comin to ct for 2 weeks in august if anyone wants to meet up i have 2 basenjis but one is sick and at the vet right now had first seizures today at almost 8 yrs old i pray to god she will be ok.

    Last I heard, the Breed Club secretaries had more people waiting or wanting pups than were available . You could get on a list for a Basenji next winter but I very much doubt you will find one still unsold. Go to the website of the BCGB, or the Northern Basenji Society as you are in the North and you will find email addresses of the secretaries. They will put you in touch with breeders who may be planning a litter for puppies to become ready to leave the nest in about a year's time. Its a long wait I know, but you have most probably missed the boat for now. You are welcome to post me privately. Good luck!

    Wow! Somehow, I never got emails letting me know I had responses to this thread and just assumed there weren't any. But now that I'm back in the loop, I did want to thank everyone for their feedback and provide some thoughts of my own. That makes me laugh about the rescue person who wouldn't let young families or lawyers adopt her dogs. :-D I can understand her rationale from both perspectives. It's a compelling argument on her part about lawyers, but not all lawyers are the same, of course. I know a lot of extremely busy lawyers in large firms who struggle to hit their billable hour requirement each month. They're machines instead of people, and I wouldn't even let them dogsit my babies for fear of neglect. That's not my situation, fortunately. The young family part will be, but I've been thinking really carefully on how I'll balance this when the time comes. My dogs are my first children, and I would hire as many trainers as needed and try as many alternatives as I could before I would give them up. Unfortunately, I don't think a lot of people have that mindset about their dogs. :( I would absolutely be open to the idea of having the breeder choose a puppy for us based on their experience and prediction as to personality. All basenjis are gorgeous to me, and as long as the markings aren't completely off-base and I can get a tightly-curled tail (I've seen that the Avongaras can be lacking in this area, and I need a cinnamon bun in my life), personality is the most important thing. I wouldn't nitpick it to death. I'll have to decide on a breeder at some point, and I'd love one who's relatively local so I could visit. The man I got Penny from had great pet Basenjis that he bred… I'd like to go with a more reputable breeder this time around. At the very least, he tested for Fanconi. I can be grateful for that, as all is well so far and I more than likely dodged a bullet when I ended up with such a fantastic dog. My plan would be to decide and get on a waiting list far enough in advance that if there were a couple litters that just didn't produce what my family and I were looking for, we wouldn't be waiting forever. In short, what I'm banking on is that the right pup with the right personality will fit in pretty flawlessly. I know what sets my basenji off in other dogs, and I'm hopeful that I could find one that would suit her and suit our home. Daisy certainly worked out well for her, and I'd love to have that same success again. I've done three puppies in my lifetime, and all of them have grown up to be well-adjusted adults. I know what it takes, and I know it's hard work. I would never go the route of having an infant and a puppy at the same time (isn't THAT actually the definition of insanity?? ;) ), but I am still trying to shoot somewhere in the next 3-4 year range so my two aren't past ten and too old to handle a puppy.

    Oh Barklessdog, you are a brave person. I must now stand with you in insane-solidarity and admit I bought it too. It is awful but when you get the line "we couldn't say goodbye so we took him home" part, you know you got to help support the woman. lol

    Love the picture of Achilles - that "one paw in the air" stance is really nice - my girl, Shaye, stands like that when she is considering whether she can get to a squirrel or some other thing before the leash runs out…....

    I saw a basenji at the dog park I like to go to once, Fleet People's Park in Winter Park, FL. Was neat to actually see one up close like that for once. I've never saw a full blood one, just my mixes ;)
