    ivoss-my vet is not strong supporter of barium swallow b/c if they have to surgically open the digestive track open they don't like to have the barium in the system that could leak out.
    They will do it but not a first choice option for them. They would rather do an ultra sound and endoscopy first.

    I have to agree here… my vets are not fans of the barium either and will do ultrasound and/or endoscopy also....

    Heard back from the vet this morning. Cody is more active since getting fluids etc. stopped vomiting, but still won't eat. All blood work red/white blood count etc came back normal. Urninanalysis showed a little high on proteins but they think that b/c he's dehydrated. Glucose came back normal. They are now taking the x-rays they took last night to the med-vet I took him to on wed. night to compare the x-rays and get a 2nd opinion. They also want to run a test for Addisions's disease. Has anyone heard of that?, have any experiance, or heard of a basenji having it?

    Addisions is pretty uncommon for any dog to get….. Cushings would be more likely. However, very possible that there could be tumors on the adrenal glands... but for both usually you find that they drink loads of water (both with Addisions and Cushings), same as you would find with Fanconi....

    I have heard of Addison's, as one of my B's has Cushing's disease which is the opposite of Addison's. Addison's is quite treatable, so you may want to hope that this is what is wrong. Lots of info. on Addison's on the internet. Hang in there!

    I understand and that is my vet's first choice also but sometimes it is the only thing that will show a blockage. The other thing would be is there an ultrasound specialist in the area. My vet will do ultrasound themselves for many things but in difficult cases they will bring in a specialist because often times they will see things that others will miss.

    My Vets are the same, while they do some ultrasound, usually they schedule a specialist once a week, if something is more of any emerency, then we go to the specialist. Lucky that we have two to choose from that are pretty close. Also, when we were trying to find Kristii's problem a few years ago (very similar to this boys problem), the barum did move through, however with the ultrasound they immediately saw the blockage and we knew surgery was needed asap…. Regardless, sounds like your Vet is on top of trying to get to the bottom of the problem.....

    Update…My vet took her x-rays and drove over to the med-vet place I went on Wed night to compare her x-rays with theirs and to get the radiologist to give a 2nd opinion. Now its confirmed a small blockage in the small intestines, something peach pit size. My vet is doing surgery immeditately to remove it. Mystery solved. I am relieved that they found the blockage, just wish it was sooner. I am a little pissed at the med-vet b/c my vet had reapatly requested their x-rays for comparison and they didn't respond. She had to physically drive over herself and hunt down somebody.

    Good news, I hope this solves all his problems…poor little fella.

    I can not believe she(the Vet) had to jump through hoops to get the films..typical.
    Let us know how things progress. I'm keeping my fingers crossed his surgery goes uneventful and speedy..

    Surgery went well, even the vet is unsure what the object was after she got it out. He's currently in recovery, not entirely out of the woods yet. The intestines had not ruptured but maybe was damaged. He will spend at least another night and day in hospital for observation.

    Great news… and I had the same experience with what they found in Kristii... none of us have ever figured out what it was... but you know it could have been in there for years.... and over time with stomach acid and stuff can really change it to make it hard or impossible to determine. Kristii's looked like a piece of steel wool, like what I used 100 years ago, SOS pads...ggg .... good news she recovered just fine.... hugs and good thoughts coming your way.

    Thanks everyone for the great support for me and Cody. Went to see him after work yesterday. He was still groggy but he recognized me and wanted to go home with me. He whined a little as I left. :(. Called the vet this morning and she said he did really good last night, and very alert today. They are going to ween him off his IV pain meds/fluids and will see if he will eat today. If he eats and keeps it down he will come home today. My girl basenji is totally lost without her little brother. She's very depressed.

    Yes all is well that is GREAT NEWS…............. Hope Cody gets to come home today and you may have to take his sister out for some ice cream to lift her spirts. Going to have to have welcome home party. Have a GREAT day and let us know how the eating goes.

    I'll just add this in case the testing doesnt give you answers. Anorexia exits. Although nearly ALL cases of dogs who do not want food has an underlying medical cause. But some dogs simply have anorexia. There are drugs that work very good for it..At one point they stopped making one type so we had so we had to switch. They increased Sayblees aggression.     Unfortunately for us Maia has never done well with chicken, she loves it and eats it but it gives her diarrhea and seems to mess up her over all health. We did blood work again and her liver enzymes decreased by 30% which is great! Her actual health though is not so good so that is bad. We can get her to eat which is good, but the food control is not great salmon, ham(boiled a few times to remove the salt), breaded cauliflower, Mac and cheese. Whatever we can get her to eat. It’s crazy! We have her booked with a chiropractor to check her nerve function and we are ready to get prednisone going if it is ibd. We are working closely with our vet daily, she currently is on metronidazole and amoxicillin and gabapentin. Thursday I thought we were going to lose her and she has rallied. I hate optimism as I don’t do well with a broken heart but I am hoping for the best right now. She is on 2 billion probiotic per day as well. Every bite of food I can get into her I think, ok 1 more day at least. If I have to spend all day hand feeding her, I will. She is finally sleeping and twitching a little less! She is going up and down stairs ok, not great but ok and she is no longer falling over. We are far from out of the woods but I have seen some small improvements. Thank you all for your words, encouragement, advice and stories of what you have gone through. It is tremendous to me how kind you are. Thank you for taking some time out of your day and trying to help! We so appreciate it. Mai Mai means the entire world to us and every word, suggestion, or story we take into account and thank you so much for being such a loving wonderful community. With lock down and a sick pup we feel quite overwhelmed, so thank you!

    @maureen252 - You can add some wet, I do.... and also add some water with the kibble and wet food... I put in about a small tablespoon of wet. And some Basenjis do drink a fair amount... some of mine did/do some didn't

    The FDA can only do what the laws allow and if the govt is controlled by lobbyist, well.... But this isn't the place for politics so I'll leave it at that. I am very sorry about your horse. :( With meat.. it's particularly red meat that research is linking to cancer... early research shows amount is a big factor (recommendations from 4 oz a day to max 18 oz a week), but who knows. Processed meat is the worse, and I saw some headline (didn't bother to read since I like my beef shortly after it stops mooing) that well done steaks more carcinogenic. For the world, reducing red meat is good for the environment and health. I was reading a study last week on red meat and joint inflammation. Studies the last 15 years actually only have general connection, but that most do is a pretty good indicator. I had a doctor tell me to stop all red meat and milk when I was a teen and experiencing joint pain. It helped, but back then, no internet and not much access to current research. Here we are 45+ years later, and still no strong proof and some show that reducing carbs with increased LEAN red meat actually decreased inflammation. However, we then get this Science Catch-up. According this new Harvard study involving 46,500 participants, eating high amounts of red meat daily might be a risk factor for gut inflammation and the development of diverticulitis. << So no one has absolute proof, but my money is on reducing red meat is more likely to be healthier than not. I just don't rule out all meat (ie fish and fowl) as getting enough protein is pretty hard and we don't have enough hard research for ME to go vegetarian. But I'm open to it and glad you are having success.

    That's exactly the hell… they aren't sure.. so actually I have to say that after the Purdue study years ago, nearly all my Rottie, chow, Dane and other breeder friends got rid of elevated bowls as NO evidence they helped at all and some they might. @Mr: The RAW diet website says to not feed a combination of raw and kibble as the kibble takes so much longer to digest and is likely to cause stomach upset. They do and it's silliness. Not one single shred of research, not one, backs it. Pseudoscience bothers me, especially pseudoscience made up to get you to feel bad about not doing things they way they want you to. Especially ALSO when that nonsense causes people to not TRY raw because they cannot do it all the time and are told it is bad. I fed both most the time for 15 yrs, as do most of my friends. I wish I had the time and money to have done nothing else back then. I cannot do raw now as I have one dog with autoimmune issues and another who, no matter the meat source, every time I try she gets diarrhea. Sigh. So I feed the $60 per 25 pound best dry I can, with lots of home cooked meat, salmon ears and US source/made chicken treats. But I believe in raw in any situation where you can.

    I used to have boys that would stop eating and get thin when females in the neighborhood were in heat. Glad he is eating and hopefully he will gain back his weight soon!
