    GenJmar, how old is he? I'm asking since my older Westie did that for a day and a half, and by the time I took hinm to the vet his liver and kidneys were shuting down..he was 12+ yrs though. Is he only vomiting or has he had diarrhea as well? By no he probably don't have very much in his system to get rid of though. I would definitely get him to a vet here pretty soon, since dhydration goes fast in a smal dogbody. Please keep us posted as to how he is doing. Best of wishes for him and you.

    well, my B started vomiting everything… and was just weak in general, she had no blockages after a x ray and a barium swallow. turned out she was septic and had to be put on a massive amount of anti biotics. Make sure you run a full blood panel and check the white blood cell count!

    My first Basenji got deathly ill in 1977 on a camping trip eating old rotten food off the ground. Throwing up, blood coming out of the anus, extremely dehydrated, etc. It was the bacteria. It had to stay the weekend at the town vet. Came out of it fine.

    Cody is 7 1/2 and until now very healthy. Since he was given fluids last night I think that should hold him until I get him into the regular vet today. No diarrhea, he did poop a little in the parking lot of the medvet, and it had something red in it (it was dark out so I couldn't see it well), and pee'd a little. I just don't think he has anything in his system to come out. Once I get home this afternoon from work to evaluate him and see if he has perk'd up any. The regular vet is on stand by (an luckly is open late tonight)

    Ok just spoke to the Vet again. They just got the records from the emergency vet. Definately brining Cody in this afternoon b/c he is still vomiting and the medication given to him should have stopped that. Thanks everyone for the suggestions and support. I will update when I get back from the vet.

    Bloodwork will show how his organs are doing which can also give the vet an idea where to look with the ultrasound. X-rays are not very good at seeing soft things that dogs may have eaten and are causing blockages without the barium.

    Good luck at the vet today, keep us posted.

    Update on Cody. Took him to the vet yesterday afternoon. After an ultrasound and a battery of test. My vet confirmed no blockages and the blood work came back normal. All his is organs are functioning. She (vet) believes he ate something rotten (food, animal?) and has gastroenteritis. Which as my vet said is basically doggie food poisoning. Her main concern that he wouldn't stop vomiting. So she gave him a shot of Pepcid, and a powerful anit-nausea shot. I came home with powerful antibodics, pro-boticis(same stuff as in activia yogert) more anti nausea meds, a case of can dog food formulated for dogs that have gastroenteritis, and instructions to buy Pepcid AC to give him.

    He did eat about teaspoon of the can food this morning. Vet says to go very slow b/c he hasn't had food in his stomach for so long we don't want to shock his system. My husband is home most of the day today so he will feeding him very small portions throughout the day.

    Now to figure out how to pay the hefty credit card bill for all the vet/meds etc. :)

    I am glad you had all this test done to rule out something more severe, having Gastrenteritis is bad enough. Hopefully Cody will be on the mend sooner than you can say yeah..
    My Otis has some diarrhea awhile back and it kept having it for over a week and half He ended up losing almost 2 lbs in three days…..finally after $$ of tests he was diagnosed with the same thing sort of. Antibiotics, probiotics and a wormer (why?) made him much better within 24 hours and almost back to normal in 48.
    Keep us updated, and know that y'all are in our thoughts. It is tough to see you pet ill and not know how to make it better..

    I'm glad it was nothing extremely serious. At least this is something that you can treat and his immune system will fight it off. I know the cost can always be frustrating, but for some reason we don't seem to blink when paying the bill. At least I don't, you know it's necessary.

    Ok, still having problems. Cody is still not eating. after getting anti-nausea medication, antibodics and I just started him on Pepcid today. He is still throwing up yellow bile. He is drinking water. I have tried everything. The food the vet sold me (can food) cheese, yogert, peanut butter. Any ideas. He won't even lick food. I have already decided if he's not eating by monday he's going back to the vet. Does anyone else have ideas for food to try to entice him. He basically has a bad case of food poison.

    Poor Cody. I can not believe he is still not eating..
    Have you tried any soup? My dogs love broth and soupy stuff in general, and chicken noodle soup in particular..I know it is high sodium but just to entice him, why not? Hot dogs, lunch meat…I'd try anything I have in my fridge/pantry. At this point I would be desperate. How long has it been since he ate last? With no food in their stomachs quite a few B's vomite bile/yellow foamy stuff..they don't handle an empty stomach very well..

    Our vet had us give Jaycee Mylanta 1/2 teaspoon every 4 to 6 hours when she got sick. I would boil some chicken in chicken broth. Tear up only chicken no skin into little little bites. See if little one will look at that also whats good is baby diet for when they are throwing up or other end. Rice,Dry Toast,Bananas. I would use baby food Bananas maybe just maybe Cody will lick those up. Good luck let us know.

    Thanks for the suggestions. Normally cody loves bananas, so I will see if I can get some baby food bananas. My vet told me in no uncertain terms NO HOT DOGS. I have boneless skinless chicken breast I can cook in broth and make bite size. I also have some cream of chicken soup that I can thin out.

    Have you tried some ground chicken or turkey, boiled in water? Pour off the water/fat mix with rice (white is easier to digest). The main thing is to limit the fat and let the "gut" settle down… feed small amounts... 3 or 4 times a day...

    I know when I was a child my mother just to give our Westie, white rice and plain boiled white fish(any type, but she used cod), it is very easy to digest. So I am with Tanza on the plain chicken and rice as well as any type of babyfood. I know hot dog is very greasy and not good at all for dogs, BUT if he hadn't eaten and just needs an "appiteaser" it might work. I feel for you and Cody.

We actually got his ashes back today and the place did a fantastic job, came back with ceramic paw print and all. It will last bring final closure, he is home. @helle-devi results confirmed what was suspected, IBD, for which we had already started his medications. I think it was just his time.

    The FDA can only do what the laws allow and if the govt is controlled by lobbyist, well.... But this isn't the place for politics so I'll leave it at that. I am very sorry about your horse. :( With meat.. it's particularly red meat that research is linking to cancer... early research shows amount is a big factor (recommendations from 4 oz a day to max 18 oz a week), but who knows. Processed meat is the worse, and I saw some headline (didn't bother to read since I like my beef shortly after it stops mooing) that well done steaks more carcinogenic. For the world, reducing red meat is good for the environment and health. I was reading a study last week on red meat and joint inflammation. Studies the last 15 years actually only have general connection, but that most do is a pretty good indicator. I had a doctor tell me to stop all red meat and milk when I was a teen and experiencing joint pain. It helped, but back then, no internet and not much access to current research. Here we are 45+ years later, and still no strong proof and some show that reducing carbs with increased LEAN red meat actually decreased inflammation. However, we then get this Science Catch-up. Red Meat And Gut Inflammation: Harvard Study ... https://thehealthsciencesacademy.org/science-catch-up/science-catch-up-28/ Jan 18, 2017 - Red meat and gut inflammation: Harvard study. According this new Harvard study involving 46,500 participants, eating high amounts of red meat daily might be a risk factor for gut inflammation and the development of diverticulitis. << So no one has absolute proof, but my money is on reducing red meat is more likely to be healthier than not. I just don't rule out all meat (ie fish and fowl) as getting enough protein is pretty hard and we don't have enough hard research for ME to go vegetarian. But I'm open to it and glad you are having success.

    That's exactly the hell… they aren't sure.. so actually I have to say that after the Purdue study years ago, nearly all my Rottie, chow, Dane and other breeder friends got rid of elevated bowls as NO evidence they helped at all and some they might. @Mr: The RAW diet website says to not feed a combination of raw and kibble as the kibble takes so much longer to digest and is likely to cause stomach upset. They do and it's silliness. Not one single shred of research, not one, backs it. Pseudoscience bothers me, especially pseudoscience made up to get you to feel bad about not doing things they way they want you to. Especially ALSO when that nonsense causes people to not TRY raw because they cannot do it all the time and are told it is bad. I fed both most the time for 15 yrs, as do most of my friends. I wish I had the time and money to have done nothing else back then. I cannot do raw now as I have one dog with autoimmune issues and another who, no matter the meat source, every time I try she gets diarrhea. Sigh. So I feed the $60 per 25 pound best dry I can, with lots of home cooked meat, salmon ears and US source/made chicken treats. But I believe in raw in any situation where you can.

    @kipper: Thank you to everyone for the great advice! Kipper is our second Basenji and the thought of loosing him at such a young age is horrific to us. Kip is currently taking metronidazole twice a day. I know the med does make him tired, but it's supposed to help get rid of his virus that in turn will bring back his appetite. I have tried all his favorites like cheese, sour cream and even homemade waffles. His diet is meat twice a day and free feeding of high quality kibble. The vet is very knowledgeable about Falconi and says all his levels are were they should be and the bicarb is all he needs. We will take Kip in again in 3 months for another blood test. Thanks again! Anna I don't want to doubt your Vet, But honestly, I find that hard to believe that he only needs Bicarb and not any of the Vitamins that are recommended in the protocol. If it were my dog, I would contact Dr. Gonto who developed the Protocol and run it by him and he is happy to talk to owners with Fanconi (it is Fanconi, not Falconi) about treatment along with conversations with your Vet. Also Thyroid testing is important for a dog with Fanconi. This would be the fill panel not just the one T4 level that are shown on regular blood work. Dr Gonto's contact info can be found at the bottom of the Fanconi Protocol information http://www.basenji.org/ClubDocs/fanconiprotocol2003.pdf Also you might want to consider joining the Fanconi Yahoo group for people with Fanconi affected dogs. They would also be able to give you good ideas since they are all dealing with dogs with Fanconi. It is a closed group for only people with affected dogs. If he was eating before the metronidazole then hopefully when he is done with that he will begin eating again.

    My Basenjis do eat acorns with no effect at all. I do find that mine seem to know what they can and can't eat. I suppose each generation has learned from the last. Puppies of course have to be watched (like human babies) because they'll chew anything. Incidentally when I was a child (a very,very long time ago) i too used to eat acorns, - again with no ill effects!
