The Class Clown!

Basenji Talk

  • There is a local farm we visit every day where Sonny runs & plays with his best dog friends. He has gotten the reputation as the class clown from the other humans due to his many crazy antics and often humorous behavior! Today he managed to have the whole field laughing. A group of us were all sitting on a hill watching the dogs play and sonny came over and snuggled up one of the guys and seemed to lay down to relax. What no one noticed was he had positioned himself perfectly to bury his head in the guys jacket pocket and one by one pick out the treats in there! But he didn't eat every treat- he spit out the ones he didn't like and went digging around for the ones he preferred!!

oh and did I mention when its time to leave he lays down and plays dead and wont move and will repeat this act every tens steps as we make our way back to the car

  • LOL! Too funny! Love it! What a smart boy! :D:p:D

  • You go Sonny Boy!! Buddy's the same entertainer at the dog park here. Steals other dogs balls then runs up to the person that threw it and barooos at them full volume with the ball in his mouth. Entertainment brought to you by the Basenji.

  • What characters Sonny Boy and Buddy are. And people wonder why we love basenjis? Ha!

I hate flexies too which is why I use a gentle leader as a training tool. Mku runs free as all mine have until we are a couple of hundred yards from the carpark. But I don't trust cars which come in and leave at speed and my new knee is still too new to cope with being pulled. He is learning and sometimes I get away with just attaching his lead to his collar. Horses for courses.

@tanza: Just an FYI, most of us start letting our pups lure practice even as young as 10 to 12 wks…. granted it is just a short straight away, but gives them some sense of the game. And usually by 7 to 8 months most all B pups can do a full course. Pat, thanks very much for that info. I trust your comments. I know Kipawa would love luring. There is a club that does luring that is about a 40 minute drive from where we are. They don't have any events planned yet - not even 'fun days'. I will keep an eye on their website. http://www.meetup.com/Tri-Cities-Dog-Coursing-AgilityTraining/

@MacPack: Congratulations to you and Zoni! I love the description of the down, I remember Topper in puppy & adult obedience class, doing the same thing. The instructor would laugh and say that "down" was supposed to be a submissive posture, but he "attacked the earth" and was definitely NOT submissive…but got the job done HIS way! Basenjis need instructors with a sense of humor! Good thing Zoni had one like that too. Anne Thanks…and yes they have a good sense of humor and love Zoni too. I wish the conformation class teacher did though, but then I'm just not going to that one for now....
