What age should lure coursing training start?

    I have been playing w/Tobias and a plastic bag tied to a pole and he loves it!! I want to get him started on this fascinating sport, one that he seems very fond of. He is now 14 months old. Where can I go to find a good trainer in my area? I live very close to Nashville(about 35 miles) but it seems like there is nobody who has any experiance w/ Basenjis, 60% of the people I have contacted dont even know what a Basenji is. These people are missing out on a wonderful breed. Petco and Petsmart have trainers but not for lure coursing. Any ideas?

    There are no trainers for Lure Coursing. You will need to go to either the ASFA website, Http://www.asfa.org or the AKC events calendar, Http://www.akc.org to find a lure coursing event in your area. Usually clubs hold practices after the completion of the trial, time permitting. Building interest in the plastic bag like you are doing is about the only real training you can do, your dog will either chase the bag or it won't.

    Hey Barkless… I have heard that Chattanooga Kennel Club is involved with lure coursing.. but I don't know that for a fact. I have found no one in Knoxville yet. I am still searching. Good luck. Let us know if you have any luck.

    From the ASFA website there are 3 ASFA approved clubs in Tennessee, Chattanooga Kennel Club, Maury County County Kennel Club, and Borzoi Club of Greater Atlanta. All have an email address and phone number of their club contact.

    quick tip, buy your lure coursing collar ahead of time. They sell them online and are much cheaper than buying at an event.

    I had to buy one for Caesar when I was there for him to participate and they were over the top with pricing….

    Normally the clubs have practices after the Saturday trials. Unfortunately none of the clubs in our area have separate practice days. You might also think about going to some of the lira meets for straight run practices. The schedule is at lgra.org

    @ComicDom1: Kelli, Miranda and I are interested in Lure Coursing also. We are located in IL so we will be looking here and in the surrounding states for events. ComicDom1 Jason If you are not far from the WI border, the BCOSW club is having a coursing fundraising event at Lurecoursing Fanatics on May 9th in Somers, WI. It's fenced in and it's just for fun and open to any breed. $5 for one run, $8 for two. I'm bringing Zoni so she can do a puppy run or two.     Yay glad to see some more local interest! As far as training, there is a group called SONG (Sighthounds of North Georgia) that does informal practices once a month or so depending on man power & weather. These practices are a great way to introduce a new dog to the lure. However, for most dogs its an instinctual thing & they don't need much training. Lola & Callie both caught on to it their first time. I just let them both watch other dogs doing it first, then let them go & they did their thing.     @seko: They just loved it even Thorn, ok! he hasn't got the speed or the nice galop of the 3 other, but still is looking for the lure, even among the dogs near the track. Timbo was jumping in the high grass not to lose sight of the lure, that was really funny, even if it was slowing him down. Valhi almost got the lure during the run, she is more taken by lure coursing than racing that's for sure. Eos loves it as much as racing, the first round wasn't that good, I think she was trying to understand why the lure wasn't going round and turning so sharp. Basenjis are really hunting dogs, and that should be kept in mind by breeders! Paul and Bill, have an oval track dog, Chiro, #1 basenji in NOTRA last year, he too does not do well at lure trials. He rather races the bunny than catch it. It does not appear Chiro will do so well in NOTRA this year, too many trails canceled due to a lack of whippet entries. Go figure. I agree, "Basenjis are really hunting dogs, and that should be kept in mind by breeders!" Laurie and I have not posted any of our show results, brags, etc. The dogs we breed are fantastic show dogs, not just lure. A properly built basenji is ideal for a fast agile courser, add the hunting instinct, good temperament, and health. This is the cornerstone to any good breeding program, to produce balance dogs beyond just balance or excellence in one aspect. Thanks for supporting coursing.
