Beegin's Fanconi Test Results

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • I got Beegin's Fanconi test results back today. I had been worried because I had read that the WL line had a lot of Fanconi in it and Beegin's sire is WL's Alex.

But I got GREAT NEWS today when I opened the envelope. Beegin's tested probably clear/normal for fanconi. Just for others who might have any bs from the cross of (sire) WL's Alex and (dam) Jammin'Jo (I can post their DNA numbers if anyone wants them). OFA number is BJ-FAC2411/14M-PI

I wanted to thank everyone on this forum for helping me learn so much about this disorder and finally getting the guts to get Beegin tested. I was quite worried but I guess my Mr. B got lucky.:D

  • That is great news for you and Beegin!

It is important to keep in mind though for others that may have related dogs that two carriers bred together can produce any combination of results Clear, Carrier, Affected or even Indeterminate so if the parents are untested then you really need to test in order to know.

  • Yea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Wonderful.
So now that will not be a worry to you.

  • That is wonderful news for you….but lvoss is right however... two carriers can produce carriers, clear, affected and Indeterminate ... so it is important to test....

And it is important to pass the word on just how important testing is "before" breeding so that we can rid our breed of this horrible affliction...

  • Great news, what a relief, but tanza is right, out of my litter of four I had 3 carriers and one clear, their mum came back clear (thank god because we knew the sire would come back carrier as he had produced an affected) and her brother and sister are carriers.

    We all need to test.

  • Great news!!!!!!!

Congrats on the VERY GOOD results!!

  • Congratulations on the great news!

  • Great news:D
I'm waiting on Belle's results coming back she was from a clear/carrier mating so praying she is a clear, as we don't have many clear dogs here in the UK that I would want ot use.

:DI am so happy for your good results!!! I haven't gotten the courage up yet to have Bella tested…:( BTW, Bella has the same parents! What is your boy's birth date... maybe they are siblings?!?!?;)

  • Great news for Beegin! :)

@tanza: Debra, I think the comment about age (puppies under a year) can not be counted as accurate yet is because Fanconi is late onset, so if they were to develope Fanconi, it would not be know now. But not sure if that is what you are asking? I think I said clearly his results are seemingly about TESTING results, not actual development. So his results are accurate for TESTING, which is what he was posting, which has nothing to do with the age of the animal tested but only if it shows expected outcomes based on the sire/dam. Age only has to do with outcome, not what his chart/results were about (ie if the linkage test results for sire/dam match what the offspring linkage test RESULT (not if they actually develop the disease)). Not sure how to make that clearer.

@moetmum: I understood that one of the main reasons dogs come back IND is because there isn't enough DNA to test. I don't think that is correct? This is from the FAQ's at www.basenjihealth.org on Fanconi Testing. I still think you should contact Jon Curby, if you have not already My dog came back indeterminate, what does that mean? Should I re-test? Answer: Our linkage test uses 3 markers (for a total of 6 alleles) to predict Fanconi status and requires that all 3 be in agreement. An indeterminate result means the 3 markers are not in agreement (view sample results) and therefore cannot predict Fanconi status.

Great news.. I had Kobey's blood done at the Nationals and I know that it arrived and they cashed my check… so just waiting for the results... He will be either Clear or Carrier, since his sire is Clear, Dam is a Carrier.... His two litter sisters did come back Clear.....

Glad that you pointed that out and yes, sometimes UTI's are really hard to catch… so you are right, learning the symptoms for your dog is the key....
