Need Some Advice

Basenji Puppy Pen
  • DH and I have been discussing getting a sister for our 15m old boy. We (thanks to ChaseandZaharasMom) have found a little girl that is available. The thing we need advice on is…getting a second pup will reduce the ammount of time Indy gets loving from DH and I, will he be alright because he has a play mate or will he become a bit love starved?

Basically I don't want to create a situation where I was trying to do something good for him (get him a play mate) and end up doing something bad for him (not giving him enough attention). Does anyone have any advice?

    Thanks in advance.

  • I have never found that to be a problem… I have always found that 2 are nice... and they still get more then enough "loving"... and you know Basenjis... if he feels like he is not... he will "push" his way in...gggg And just as easy to love two as it is one... IMO

  • My 2 b's keep each other love when we are at work, then they share it with us when we get home.
I have only good things to say with my boy and girl being together.

  • We don't have any problems sharing the love between two!

They don't like to share laps, however, so usually each of us wind up with a Basenji.

  • Two is great! We have 3 and love it, only problem is when all three want to get loving at the same time and I only have 2 hands. They do keep each other company when you aren't home, and no human can really play the way another basenji can play. It may take a few days or weeks for them to work out their relationship, or they may hit it off right away. But I definatelyrecommend 2!

Thank you. Yes, our breeder is litter box training. Our first Basenji was a mix (Basenji and Retriever), but she had a lot of Basenji ways. She was already housebroken when we got her, so we didn’t have to worry about that task. We will definitely continue the litter box training until he is old enough to be outside and it is warmer.

Hi everyone! New Basenji owner here from Melbourne, Australia. I know this topic is a couple of months old but I thought I'd just add my experience for anyone else needing help with puppy biting. My wife and I had been having mouthing/biting trouble with our (now) 12-week old pup for the last week. The behavior has improved almost instantly by following the advice in this video. She's still pretty mouthy but it doesn't escalate the way it did before when we'd try and stop her from doing it/yelping/saying '"NO". I think everything we were doing was just turning it into the funnest game ever for her! https://youtu.be/bd1Q56Mfp4M

@Anubis's: Awesome! Thanks for the info! Im going to get right on that. Will be good to to know he's not a carrier as well in case I ever wanted to breed him. Now the strip testing, is it with a diabetes test thing? Do I test his blood or urine? Urine, you use Diabetic test strips for sugar in the urine. Here is a link for them on line. You don't really need the Ketone part, but sometime hard to find just the Urine strips. But do not just get the Ketone ones, they are not the correct ones. http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=37671&catid=11645&fromsrch=urine+test+strips

@agilebasenji: about leaving the dog outside- It seems like, perhaps due to the current economy, there have been a lot of dogs "missing" lately. I'd be afraid to leave a cute little dog like a basenji out side by himself. Not an issue where I live.
