  • yes, those are them

  • @Quercus:

Not necessarily. You need to ask the breeder (is it Eric?) if the parents and recent relatives have had CERF eye exams done as adults. Lots of those older dogs are behind lots of present dogs that don't have any eye issues. But you need to know what the current status of the relatives' eye exams are.

    Eric does not health test

  • @brianpoppee:

    Eric does not health test

If they are not health testing then you really want to go to a breeder that does…

  • and you would recommend?

  • I've had a hard time finding a champion bred
there is one breeder in Ok who will almost give me a pup
but they are not AKC and who knows whats behind them

  • so you don't like the history behind this litter

  • I am sure Tanza is typing a post, give her a minute!

Are you looking for a puppy or would you also go with a young adult?

  • do you know James Ormiston?
    He's in NY

  • I'd even be happy just helping someone show their dog.
but am considering and looking into getting my own.
    any age (even a special)

  • I went through alot of these already but no one will even talk to me
    not helpful at all

    so I started searching elsewhere

  • I would prefer to lease or buy outright.
almost ready to just quit my search - too confusing and too hard to find an honest friendly breeder with a great pedigree.
Thought I found one but I guess maybe not?
I guess I know why the price was fair and terms were too.

  • They are your best bet for a well socialized, healthy show quality basenji.
What did you tell them you're looking for?

  • I can dig up a few pictures of Eric's dogs (the first few), I see him a lot. I don't think I have anything of Morgan though, or the Biff dog.

Eric's dogs are beautiful, but I can't say anything to his health testing practices.

  • I want to join the show community, I think that is what spooked them all.
I could do a co-own but terms were unrealistic and not fair at all, about 1/2 of the breeders were way unfair.
If I don't make champion I have to pay them too etc etc

  • @kiroja:

what do you think of their lines, Good/bad?
I'd love picture and info of them if you can find them.

  • So you are looking for a dog to show? A lot of breeders are not willing to sell intact dogs outright because of the risk of them being bred without good health testing and thorough screening of future puppy homes. And also a lack of spay/neuter contracts. They don't want their well bred dogs or offspring of those dogs ending up in bybs and puppy mills and people who won't have the breed's best interest at heart.

I know some good show breeders can be intimidating, but don't give up. Also, most puppies from responsible breeders are already placed at this point. You'll be hard pressed to find a dog still available from anyone reputable. You might have to settle for getting on next year's puppy list. But there may be a few folks willing to place a young adult that needs to finish still?

How did you get interested in showing? What are your future plans for your puppy?

  • I'm looking for a hobby. Use to show cattle and liked it.
Now I live in town so.. Dog people are hard to work with.

No for sure future plans. I have a 10yr gs now.
No kids, no wife, just me and too much free time.

  • Well Eric is a great guy, and can produce nice show dogs. He is a wonderful person to show with. His dogs are pretty and can move nicely too. But if he doesn't health test, that that would concern me. (I've never asked him as I've never looked into his lines.) I see him at most of the local shows and chat with him, and I like what he has to say about the dogs as he comments on them, has a good eye for the breed. He has several other breeds and Basenjis are not his main focus, at least not nowadays.

    ok, digging through pictures now…lol

  • If you are looking to get started in showing then you really want to start with a good well bred dog. It may take some work and preserverance to find a breeder that you feel you can work with and is also doing the health testing. As has been already said, most of those breeders have already sold their puppies from this year's litters.

If you are willing to wait a year, maybe a good place to start is talking to some local breeders and tell them you would are interested in possibly getting a show puppy next year but would like to give showing a try and see if any may need a hand showing. That way you get to see if this is really a hobby you are interested in and breeders get to see that you are committed to showing.

As long as the cat keeps well out of the dog's way ! Most learn to do that pretty soon after the Basenji arrives - I have seen a Basenji shaking a cat, much like you would a feather duster.

@patrick-brandon good ! I will reply when I get back from the woods. Glorious weather, mud drying up and Kito is taking to recall very well indeed. Of course, he has his half brother to set a good example 😍
