    Thank you for letting me join your community. We are one of the lucky ones, because of Corky. April of 1998 we had two wonderful Rottweiler friends, Helga & Hagar. Helga (12 years old) layed down in her favorite spot in the backyard and just went to sleep. One week after Helga passed Hagar was diagnosed with cancer and had to be put down. As you can imagine we were pretty upset. We waited one month, could not wait any longer. I wanted something different, so I call the animal shelter that was closest to us and was told they had a young female Basenji that had been found and not claimed. She was going up for adoption that same day. I asked them to hold her for me, I drove the 80 miles to pick her up. She was about 8 months old, had kennel cough, was lethargic and my husband wondered what did I bring home. Well, I have to say that was the best 80 miles I ever drove and my husband agrees with me. She is a great friend and a true arrogant Basenji.
    We now have Corky and her little sister Zoe (Chi-Weiner)

    Thank you for replying so quickly. It is nice to share the love of Basenji's with other Basenji families. I live in Eureka CA and there are very few Basenji's here in our town. In fact I have only seen one and it was just visiting a neighbor. I know there must be more, I just have not seen them. Corky is such a joy to us, I have heard that some can be contankerous, she is not. She is independant when she wants to be, but also very needy when it comes to loving. I love the way I can call her, she comes in the room and if she wants to she will come, if not she will walk out of the room. She will be 12 years old this year and I am hoping she will live to be 90.

    One of my pups lives with 3 other basenjis in McKinleyville up that way. I also know that there is another basenji owner up that way because they always visit the basenji ring when we show at the Lost Coast Kennel Club show up there.

    about your Basenji, they just spoil you, and the other is also so photogenic, in fact they both are. So glad you decided on this breed, and I know how you feel when you want them to live forever.

    @mauigirl: Okay I actually went and found the e-mail I sent in to order the collar. The collars are from Northwind Catalog. Their medium collar is adjustable from 10" to 16" On the first collar I ordered I requested that it be 3" smaller than the medium size (Zip, girl), and the second I ordered I asked it to be 2" smaller (Riley, boy, bigger). In hindsight the medium as is would have been fine. On both of our dogs the collars are adjusted to just about as big as they can go so 13" on Zip and 14" on Riley (his is snugger going over his head but still loose around his neck). And the allowance looks to be 3" (that extra loop in a martingale that make it instantaneously adjustable) Sorry that took me so long, I ended up staying at work til 1am that night! Thank you very, very much !! It's past midnight now so I'll check it in the morning. Greetz UPDATE : Yes, they are the right size !:D

    Giza swam in the Atlantic once when we were out walkin' at low tide and the tile came in. The Atlantic in Canada is pretty cold!

    Hey thanks! A Basenji owner's manual is exactly what I've been looking for. The more I learn about these amazing creatures, the more I realize that everything I've ever known about dogs and puppy training is pretty much useless! These guys have rules of their own! I will send for my copy right away. I really appreciate all of the help I've received from everyone here so far. It's already proven extremely helpful. No help like that from those with "on the job" experience! I look forward to sharing my experiences with Missi and Cooper as well. Thanks again! ~Beth

    Andrea - I want to thank you for recommending the obedience website. We have all begun a program of dog training - fun for the kids especially. We have her (and the Jack Russell mix) sitting before they are allowed out, and they must "stay!" sitting even when the door opens until they are given a command to "go!" Even if the cat is just outside the door taunting them with his wicked yellow eyes to chase him - they must sit and stay until told to go. And now, after a month of constant training from all of us - they do it. In fact, both now sit at the door before it even opens anticipating the command. We also have hand gestures for the verbal commands - probably not the conventional ones, but they work for us and the pooches. We've started working on "come" now - Kandy definately doesn't like it, but she is beginning to obey "come-sit" for her treats. No treat without obeying. She's smart and quick to learn, and so is Sammy, so we're having a good time with them. Well, we did until Sammy went into heat and began making us all nutty with her constant whining and alternate aggressive behavior (she and Kandy had some real loud and nasty tussles) I had little time for the internet, for all the extra work it caused and the lack of sleep! But she's nearly done with that, and both are returning to whatever poses for normal and are getting along again. We're so happy with the two of them, and Kandy is so unique and special. What a treasure - wierd noises that she makes and all! MamaofMany
