  • So I've been working with Gossip to ease her into having the run of the house while I'm gone by disappearing for short periods of time and then was planning on blocking off different rooms until she could be trusted.

Well last week she took matters into her own hands.

I had set up an xpen as a start to give her more room than just her kennel. I was gone about half a day and came back and she's loose. I thought she must have gotten the door to the pen open (it didn't really have very secure latches). The next day before I went to work I made sure to add extra snaphooks so the door couldn't be opened. I worked my regular hours and came home to a loose dog! Either the adjacent kitchen table gave just enough stability to the pen or she climbed on her kennel (which was inside) and up and out. However, after being loose for the 9 hours I was gone nothing was damaged (other than a piece of paper torn) and except I could tell she tried to see out the front bow window (the plants were moved and the blinds a little messed).

I put her back in her kennel the next day (because I was late for work and didn't have time to pick everything up) and somehow she got out of that too (I must not have latched it properly :o). Another full day at work, another loose dog, and another "no-damage done".

I guess that settles that. Whew!

  • Well, isn't that great news for you and Gossip!…. Guess she has told you that she is "ok" loose in the house when you are not home....

  • She's told me A LOT of things in no uncertain terms :D :D
    I think she's very appropriately named :D

  • Sounds promising… BTW I am trying to remember if I have seen pictures of Gossip before. Have you ever posted any, I would love to see them!;)

  • I haven't but thanks for reminding me that I need to get some.

    What a girl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Well she wasn't so good yesterdy - she chewed on the arms of the chair in the living room. I was going to buy a new one anyway but I think I'll wait until she shows me she can be good everyday.

I am glad to hear that his UTI is gone. It might be good for dogs to be left for a few days and then come and pick them up, just like it is good for kids. It teaches young kids that mom, dad or whomever has not 'dumped" you, they will come back. I wonder if dogs would see that connection? Good news that he howled, I have yet to hear Otis, although he does have his own language going on when I vacuum clean.LOL.

For me, reading the threads makes me think that I must have the least destructive Basenji. We can leave him free in the house for up to 4 hours alone and he will barely even touch the toys we leave out for him (not even my slippers!). With his new companion we are hoping to give him a little more freedom without losing too many possessions.

@tanza: Amen to that Kellie…. and put them in your lap and then show people.. sorry... they do shed.. but that it is not as much as many other breeds... gggg.... And of course, most Basenjis are not "lap dogs" so… when you put this noisy, somewhat shedding dog in their laps they quickly find that it is wiggling and squirming to get down...

Sahara has not been in her crate since we got the underground fencing, she is Ok left in the den, kitchen where her bed is and water is left. My husband works night shift and I get home at 5:00 so it is pretty convienent. I took her out of the crate at about 6 mos. when we got the doggie door put in the kitchen. There were a few chewed up things in the beginning, but not anymore as a general rule. If she gets anything it is from surfing the kitchen counters, or my table top furniture. Just today she got my son's expensive sunglasses and ran out the doggie door b/c we were chasing her to get them. He was furious, but I said, "You left them were she could get them, it's not her fault". "You know she chews plastic, so don't you dare hit her or anything", he was so very mad. Sure, I get mad when she gets my prescription glasses, but IT IS NOT HER FAULT, I left them available to the keen eyes of a chew crazy basenji.

My husband and I went to a Rays baseball game several weeks ago where he actually caught a foul ball! Well we brought the ball home and he was so proud (never caught a ball before) but guess who has had her eyes on it since it came into the house. You guessed it little Ms. Trixie. He had it showing our kids and she actually jumped up onto his lap and tried to take it. We of course have since went out and bought her (I know spoiled rotten) her own baseball and she loves it!

Indi has been teething and he actually likes to CARRY his teeth around. He will make the teething face (kind of like hes tasted something bitter and is smacking his lips with his toung sticking out) finally get it out and spend the rest of his time picking it up, carrying it about 5 ft and spitting it out. Then if no one notices he will continue doing this untill we take it away. Its wierd, really wierd but when he is holding it you see his best show dog prance while he is walking around.
