I FINALLY know what Hollie is!!

Basenji Talk
  • I've had Hollie for 3 1/2 years now. She is a Basenji mixed with Whippet. This I have know for a while…. What I didn't now was that this type of mix was called a Lurcher (also known as a longdog).

I'm sure alot of you know what they are, but it was new to me. A Lurcher is derived from sighthound crosses and is bred to hunt a specific type of game.

I always knew Hollie was a double sighthound, but I didn't know there was a specific name for this kind of cross.

    I've learned something new!! :D

  • Lurchers can complete in lure coursing with the National Lure Coursing Club, if that interests you. The NLCC is just starting up and is being spearheaded by the former ASFA Region 7 director.

  • I have heard of greyhounds mixed with Scottish Deerhounds, and called lurchers. I didn't know it applied to other sighthound crosses. I learn many new things every day!

@roguejyme said in Basenji Mix Chihuahua What to know: everyone tells me ... wait, wait, wait.... is your dog part Basenji? Cattle dog? Jack Russell? You know who his parents are, so... he carries their genes. Do you suspect that you don't actually know who the parents are? If that might be true, then consider doing a DNA test. But if you are confident that those are his parents, then you already know the answer. Enjoy him for who he is. Yours.

I only have one boy of unknown parentage as he is an adoption but my guess is that they probably do "know" family by scent if not sight. Their differing reactions to "family" probably relates back to the "pack" mentality. A female may have two daughters that she treats completely differently due to her perception of their ability to challenge her as "alpha" female in the future. I would guess it is similar for males. Time together as a "family", as with humans, is probably also a factor. Just my thoughts.

Fostering might get you in to the reality of owning a b. I think going to BRAT and asking to foster would be the way to go. If you like the dog you foster, you can always adopt it.
