What breed makes a good match with the basenji?

Basenji Talk

  • So.. See title.. :D

Which breeds make a good match with our B's??

We're maybe thinking about adding another doggy to the family.. So we need some suggestions.

The Pharaoh hound is high on my list… The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever is high on BF list. (I love them as well :))

    Do you have any idea?

  • I think that it is a very personal choice. Many breeds can and do get along well with basenjis. What it is it that you are looking for that is making you look at other breeds? Those traits are probably going to be the real keys to finding your next dog.

  • What are you looking for? Something to tire them out, or just keep them busy all day?

  • I find our dogs seem to do best with shorter haired, hound, sporting dogs, like beagles & labs. Our dogs see little fluffy miniature dogs as prey. Long haired larger dogs, they tend to want to pluck their hair off like a chicken.

  • I used to have a toller. Lovely dogs!! But very, very work orientated. You have to keep them REALLY busy - something like agility or obedience is great for them if you're not going to work them.

Only had Maya a few days, but she loooooves my pugs. Gets on great with the labs too but seems fascinated with the pugs lol

  • I think dobies are good matches. ;) Ayda always kept Lexi in line– It was really funny!

  • I think a second basenji is the perfect match for your first one!
    laugh.

  • Yep Sharron, that is how I feel too.

  • But in Lisa's case it is "a second b is the perfect match for your first one, a 3rd b is the perfect match for you second one, your 4th b is a perfect match to your 3rd one…" :D:D:D

  • Ok.. My first choice would be another b. But we also like a lot of other breeds :)
We don't want a dog that's too big.. So no dobermann for us ;) Also no fluffy hamsters.
I'm not really a pug-person.. so sorry.. no pug.. :D
We're not looking for a dog to tire Tillo out. Just a companion.. We will tire them out :D
And we like sporty, natural looking (no short noses etc) dogs.
    This is hard..

  • Medium size, low grooming, sporty, natural looking - I think you just described a Basenji!

I guess I would ask, if you don't have another breed in mind, are you really sure you don't want another basenji? Truly your criteria matches basenji though there are some other breeds that could also be a fit, like a whippet.

  • Are you thinking of a specific group? I know your classifications are completely different over there.

If (If!!) Liz and I were to get into another breed….I can say with 75% certainty it would come from the (sight)hound group. With all the coursing we spend more time around those breeds than any other group.

    :D I did describe a basenji, didn't I? :D
I like whippets as well.. but I always have a problem with their heads being not so friendly.. (this does depend on their colloring/marking)

There is one problem with adding a b-puppy.. the period when they are born, doesn't fit my lifestyle at the moment.. And BF has some doubts.

We have a sighthound group and a spitz/primitive dog group. I like both groups! (love salukis etc :D)

  • Have you considered a Vizsla? They're wonderful!! I find them a great match with/for my B's. They are similar in personality as well.

  • both of the malinois i've had get a long great with the basenjis. my basenjis do like to defuzz hairy dogs, but otherwise I'd say any breed could do fine with your basenji. i think it has more to do with individuals.

  • What about a dalmatian? Sporty, handsome dogs…

  • What about a Cirneco dell'Etna? I've seen a number of them lure coursing. Similar in size to a basenji, not as big as a Pharoah Hound.

  • @BDawg:

AH My two FAVORITE breeds!!!! That's a combo I would LOVE to have!

  • Fox terrier or Jack Russell terrier?

@donc said in Is a small studio apartment good for a Basenji?: I'm going in the opposite direction and saying I don't think the size of the house or apartment matters. I agree. The space available isn't the issue, as you say, it is the problem of being left alone. That said, there are some unique problems with an apartment as opposed to a house. An unhappy dog won't be popular with your neighbours if it is screaming half the day. Bad enough in a detached house with some property around it, intolerable with close apartment neighbours with shared walls. Add to that the likelihood that the dog may hear noises from bordering apartments or the hallway that will set it off. As I said, for company a cat would be a far better option. @mister-science, some people use treadmills with their dogs, which can be a good option if the desire is just to give them physical exertion, but won't solve their needs to get out and see and smell and explore.

Last I heard, the Breed Club secretaries had more people waiting or wanting pups than were available . You could get on a list for a Basenji next winter but I very much doubt you will find one still unsold. Go to the website of the BCGB, or the Northern Basenji Society as you are in the North and you will find email addresses of the secretaries. They will put you in touch with breeders who may be planning a litter for puppies to become ready to leave the nest in about a year's time. Its a long wait I know, but you have most probably missed the boat for now. You are welcome to post me privately. Good luck!

This is DEFINITELY a Basenji Chi mix and NOT shiba. (Only the example of a Shiba is a Shiba for those who might be confused by the example pics.) Basenji has the white feet, white tip on tail AND the white spot at the nape, and the curled tail. does he/she "talk" ? My chi Basenji has an unusual talk that everyone loves. Some who know more about basenjis - a couple in the neighborhood who have 2 - call it the Basenji yodel.
