  • Yes even if they are spayed - even if they are mother daughter, littermates or any other combination - it works until it doesn't and when it doesn't you cannot go back.

Acutally neutered males make the best companions - if you remember that in basenjis - the bitch is typically the alpha or the alpha wanna be - lots of maneuvering for position. Hence more female to female aggression.

  • I have found that littermate are the worst… especially of the same sex... many times even male/female littermates don't work.....

And dmcarty is right... the bitch is typically the alpha totally... hence to saying "Girls have an agenda, Boys don't have a clue"

  • Looks like we're going to pray for a boy. My husband tells me dogs can't read and not to believe everything I read. But this is something I don't want to "test". We are definately going to try to get a male. If there isn't a male available this season I suppose we will wait until next year or try BRAT. Thanks for the info.

This is a little off topic of the thread…but if the above is typical, is it more difficult if you have an older male (4 years) and you're getting a female puppy? It seems like he would be really annoyed if a younger female dog keeps trying to boss him around. Nemo was okay with my senior beagle but he has been on his own for the past 5 months. I'm slowly imagining what I'm going to get into.

  • Not necessarily. Most B's are pretty tolerant to the puppies-up until they are about 6 months old. Then they start telling them to 'knock it off'. After my boxer died, I had the heeler/am mix and she was about 5-6 when I got Shadow as a puppy. He pretty well ruled her for a bit, until she decided she had enough. Same with the other dogs that I got after Shadow. Shadow would put up with the girls for a few months and then suddenly, one day, BAM would not put up with any more nonsense from them. (I got three girls after him) He has been good with all of them. Damisi will still bug him to play.

  • @MomOfMya:

Thanks Tanza! I will keep that in mind. I'm so afraid of male dogs and them lifting there legs on things. Are they as easy to train as females?

I have had the same experience with my fosters. The male/female pair work great but the female/female I just had bickered constantly.

We have one of the few breeds that this doesn't happen… even with intact males... but especially it doesn't happen with neutered males. My boys have never lifted their leg in the house.. not even when the girls were in season and that is the time most will mark....

Are they as easy as girls? Depends on the male... remember the saying... Girls have an agenda... Boys don't have a clue... so while training "sometimes" they forget.....

Most are pretty accepting of a puppy… What you need to be ready for is the "noise" they can and do make... especially when the older one is "teaching" the pup... Most people think they are killing the pup... but that is not so.... remember with Basenjis, key is when the "don't" make noise that you have a real serious fight on your hands...

My Tyler was 4 when Kate came. He was very tolerant. Rarely lost his temper with her, perhaps only 3-4 times. On the other hand, Kate was the aggressive little bitch from day one. Those little puppy needle teeth left scabs all over his neck and ears. Needless to say they sorted it out without our help. They sometimes grumble and snipe at each other to this day, but there has never been a fight that drew blood.

  • I have 2 male basenjis 12 years, 11 years, one female basenji 2 years and one female malinois 17 months (acts about 7 months) and haven't had any real problems. Jet, the tri-ing, my 11 year old, is a bit grumpy inside, but enjoys playtime outside. He has lots of rules about indoor behavior and growls a lot, but, sadly for him, nobody pays much atttention to him (except the current and past malinois who both act a bit afraid of his growling). So, he growls, acts real tough, but has never hurt anyone. Digital, the brindlewonderkid, my 12 yo, is more playful and is a very tolerant gentleman. So you'd think my Zest puppy, is going to rule him, but every once in a while he'll put her in her place and she kowtows to him quickly (unlike with Jet, who she usually ignores him when he tries that).

  • I've had three male basenjis over the years and never had any problem with them lifting legs in the house nor have I ever had any serious problems with training either.

  • We once got a puppy with a 12 year old male (and an older female). For the first week the adults kept their distance from the girl pup, but within a couple of weeks my male and the pup were inseparable. She hung from his neck with those wicked teeth and he hardly ever growled at her, she was his little shadow and they adored each other. Adults will make terrible noise and flash fangs at the pups, especially at about 6 months when they are teenagers, but most pups ignore it all!
Male dogs are usually very sweet and good with pups…females are, well, bitches.

@Buddys: I agree, well said Robyn. A very well rounded reply, and I appreciate your time in explaining the options that are out there. I am not one who advocates adopting ONLY from a shelter or rescue. I love to hear that it happens, but totally respect the choice of wanting a pedigree. I just hope that anyone who breeds for what ever reason does follow responsible guidelines for the prospective new owners, health and welfare of the puppies, dams and sires, and of the wholesomeness(?) of the breed of choice. I do have a waiting list for the future puppies (besides the ones that myself and the co breeder are keeping.) I also have a contract that states for any reason the puppies are welcome back at any time for any reason and i highly urge this to my potential owners (i say required but we all know that people fall through loops when you say required) anyways All of my dogs are health tested and the sire is health tested too. Fanconi, eyes, thyroid, and the hips I am waiting for results but she isnt in heat yet so i hope i will get it before they are bred. Trust me, I also know how rescues are. I have rescued (www.foreverfriendsrescue.webs.com) since 2008 when i rescued my first dog scheduled to be put down that day i went into the pound, and i never really stopped) so i know the effects that bad breeders can have on the dog population. Which is why we need to have more responsible breeders out there. Ones who do the health testing, ones who care where there puppies go, ones who want to help the breed, ones who give a $h!t. I love this breed. They are my world and i just cant live without them. They chose me. I chose them. Its the only breed that is right for ME. and I know this. I love showing (only been to a few so far, as i am fairly new) but i love it and i enjoy meeting new people that share the love of basenjis too and I enjoy the fun and sport of it. I really want to do what is right with breeding, which is why i have waited to find a good breeder to help me along and to help guide me as my mentor. Miah is a wonderful dog, so close to standard. and so pretty. nice pedigree and the most supurb temperament also. With my mating (dorsey x miah) I expect great things! Me and my co owner are really excited as is the sire owner. We cant wait for this litter. I know breeding is a huge controversy because of all the unwanted pets in the world, but i have been there with rescueing and if i truely didnt feel like my dog was worthy of it, and i truely didnt feel like I could do it CORRECTLY, i honestly wouldnt. but thank you for your input. I know you care, as do we. but i really am trying to do it right. Spent lots of money getting tests done, and finding a really nice bitch to start with, and getting the knowledge. (I got my first basenji 11 years ago! and i have researched and experienced the whole time!) After 11 years, i feel i am finally ready to take the step and breed my bitch to start my kennel where i want to continue to show and create loving, family pets. as well as fun things like coursing and agility, etc..

@YodelDogs: We have already established that Dexter's "breeder" was disreputable. How many litters did this person have? If she had more than one litter then it is entirely possible that the papers that were supplied with Dexter may not have even been from the litter he was in. Very True Robyn

Although "NO" became what Shaye most heard, along with " drop it" (she's too quick for "leave it," so "drop it" has replaced that) and "get off the table" and "stop digging the screens" (on the porch), lately we have been firmly saying her name, then squirting her in the face with a squirt bottle. Amazing how well that works - of course the entire house is getting wet but she's getting the picture that when we pick up the squirt bottle and show it to her, she'd best stop whatever it is she's doing. Gemma, of course, responds to "stop" and "leave it." Must be the "other" kind of dog in her….

@moetmum: I like it its different. If you are anything like me your dogs have lots of names anyway, Rufus answers to Bear at the moment which came about from the song Rupert the Bear which I used to sing to him! Fiji is sometimes called Flea or Felicity (Her show name is Zande Feleji), Kia answers to Kissy shortened from Kissy Keeks and so it goes on! I have to admit to giving mine a few names too… Gracie is grassy arse ( She got all excited when someone said gracias or however you spell it so she ends up being called grassy arse now :D ) or Gravy (again, got all excited when someone mentioned Gravy :o ). Delilah is Lilah, Lils, Lily. Riley is Crickey ( as in Crickey O'Riley :D ) or just Ry. And poor Maya gets called MyMy at home :o Chloe our old lab is Chlodagh or Da Pig :D Thanks to my brother for the second one lol! Beau is The Bobo! And Cassia gets called Cassandra when she has been bad! Its terribly confusing at times
